I remember when Australia and New Zealand were knocked it was amazing. Then South Africa nearly had the same fate the following day. Talk about nerves Fiji really pushed us to the very edge. And following the Aussies and NZ elimination it became a pretty dour tournament England showed heart but they werent worthy WC finalists by only scoring one try in the knockout rounds. But thats how the cookie crumbles and they took their changed.

Fun WC even if the final was borderline boring. Argentina and Fiji were everyone’s second teams, they made you believe. Australia and NZ eliminated in the QFs blew the WC open. Most upsets at this WC

Johnny Threebollocks while that is true and South Africa were the best team in the tournament by quite some way, I still maintain that England’s try was wrongly disallowed. If that try counted then England would have kicked for goal on all those penalties they got instead of for touch and there’s a real chance they would have won

This was a great tournament, featuring an excellent quarter final line up. Though, I thought England beating France in the semi led to a dour final.

The gulf in class between the finalists was better represented by their first match. England had to pretty much kill the final if they wanted to win, and they did that pretty well tbf but France vs. South Africa likely would have been much better to watch, both teams playing great rugby at the time

When Ireland 🇮🇪 nearly lost to Georgia 🇬🇪 it was about then they opened up the *"residency"* rule 😂😂

No idea why France didn't play Elissalde, Clerc, Michalak and their full strength forwards vs Argentina.

I actually think the forward pass in the France/NZ quarter-final not happening and the ABs advancing would've dramatically improved the tournament. We would've finally had that true blockbuster Carter vs. Wilkinson duel in the semi that we never got, one of the biggest missed opportunities in 00s rugby. NZ vs. South Africa would've been the perfect final, a clash of the giants between the two international generations who were the definitive sides of the mid-00s.

Fiji's (almost successful) comeback against the Springboks was also good to watch, as was the England Australia game Agreed on the Carter-Wilkinson blockbuster (when both are fully fit) we never got. We only got that in 2009 autumn game. To be fair though it would have never been fair match-up as it took England until 2012 to start getting actual talented grassroots players to start emerging at first grade / test match level, whereas New Zealand have had it since 2005

Yeah the referee allowing France a Forward Pass try England and France preform terrible in their pools and a miracle for England to make it to the final where New Zealand and Australia did very well in their pool matches then both lost in their quarter finals

2011 was fairly poor too

Boring World Cup. Not just cause of a forward pass winning France the game but most tries we’re push over tries and too many penalties ending up being penalty kicks. Most of the knock out games were low scoring especially with England’s games. Thank god the 2011 and 2015 world cups have been more interesting. Even the pool games had so many uninteresting tries
