Paul Hayman was the first in line for that money. That's why ECW folded. Mike Awesome was the first to jump ship as it happened. He dropped the title and appeared on Nitro unannounced.

The sad thing is, a lot of ECW talent relied on the hardcore aspect which limited how far they could go in WWE. Who is Sandman without the cane? Who is Balls Mahoney without the chair? Who is RVD if he can't do the Van Terminator? Very few ECW talents could work a traditional match and be entertaining but RVD was a great athlete with a nice toolbox of moves that translated well to the WWE style. He deserved a long run at the top.

This was only true towards the end of ECW. At their peak they had a pretty diverse group of workers. They had guys who could do traditional technical wrestling, trading holds and throws. They also helped introduce lucha libre to the US. They only went to almost exclusively hard-core after much of their talent got lured away by other promotions.

I met rvd once at the Poughkeepsie Civic Center in New York back in 1997. It was ECW’s first show there. To be honest, he was a real asshole. With that said though everyone has a bad day and I probably caught him at a bad time. I remained a fan and still have respect for him. He’s an amazing athlete and was very under rated in WWE. He should of had a long championship run.

I'd go to the ECW shows in Danbury, CT. (The only one I missed happened to be a PPV) and after one show, RVD came out to meet fans and sign autographs. I remember a father was there with his son and the guy told his son "That was cool. He didn't have to do that. Nobody else came out to sign autographs but this guy stayed behind and did." I remember at one show, security was ready to confiscate my digital camera (they were new at the time). They thought I was taking video. It looked like a video camera but I showed the guy it was a digital photo camera that put the pics directly onto a 3.5" floppy disk (Sony Mavica). After a couple of minutes, he got word over his radio that it was okay and he walked away. I had some great pics. A close up of Francine's ass lol and a cool shot of RVD in mid air as he jumped off the top rope onto Da Baldies who were on the floor outside the ring. Sadly my PC crashed and I lost the pics and the original files on the floppy disk were corrupted somehow.

I’ve always had a great respect for RVD and all he’s done. He is definitely one that I always mention when people say underused for a great talent. When he came to WWE I got so excited because I thought wow this is going to be something special. And then the other shoe dropped and he disappeared which I don’t blame him for whatsoever. The man was awesome and had so many great matchups. Just a shame to let it go to waste.

One thing people don't talk about is that an ECW show was designed for a small venue, where everyone can see the tables break and the staples in someone's head. In WWF the show was for the TV watching audience. The camera makes everything look fake anyway, so why not fake everything? You can hide mattresses way over in the other part of the arena. Sure you know they are there, but you can't see them. At an ECW show everyone would see them.
