Before the RV remodel/renovation AFTER tour, you’ve got to see some of the sweat that went into the RV transformation! We spent two months parked in Florida working on the renovation of our 2005 Winnebago Sightseer, trying to update the RV for the next year of full time RV life.
Budget RV Renovation
Additionally, this is what one would call a budget RV remodel. We've all seen some of the incredible remodels/complete teardowns/ overhauls that are littered across Pinterest and KZread. Since we're planning on spending almost exactly one year in this Class A for our Pan American roadtrip we don't want to invest too much money into it. That means that we'll be doing all the work ourselves and limiting the scope of the project.
For example, solar energy is hugely popular in RV community right now- and with good reason. By investing in a proper solar setup RV owners can be all but completely free of the standard power grid. However, the up front investment is high and the return takes years. Since we want to limit the amount of money we're sinking into the Sightseer we'll be skipping the solar upgrade and instead relying on the built in Onan generator for power needs.
RV Renovation Update:
UPDATE: Having living in the RV full time for two months we've barely even used the generator. We can typically power our laptops and other energy needs off the inverter we purchased and only drain the house batteries to half capacity. We typically only turn the generator on to quickly use the microwave or for the once a month session where it needs to be run for an hour for maintenance.
Instead of 6 weeks of waiting for paint to dry in a high humidity climate, you can watch a timelapse of a few seconds of painting and feel all the satisfaction that comes along with it. This episode is like a mashup of Property Brothers by way of Fixer Upper-except with none of the expertise. Also, instead of a house, it’s a huge car. (Yes- An RV is a car you can shower in.)
For this remodel, we-
Change hardware out in the RV.
Paint the cabinets and walls.
Remove the TV and replace with a large cabinet.
Put up subway tile.
Install fancy time faucets.
MUCH MUCH MORE
----------------
ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny.
We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test - one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

RV renovation takes so much more labor, time and energy than is showed on video, imagine what you don't see! I'm renovating a 1993 fleetwood bounder Class C RV starting with a complete roof tear off replacing ALL vents and covers ugh. I also show how I resolved issues from the factory which should help so many others trying to deal with challenges like that. I'm renovation this all by myself which makes it takes longer and way more challenging! I respect ALL the great effort you did and share with us!!

You two are so funny...Finn, putting on her glove saying 'We're going In'....instantly reminded me of when I was a child, following my brother down to a farm with horses. There happened to be a vet there, with a BIG glove on, and he was 'Going In' to turn the wee one from the pregnant mare! He was up to his armpit of course...and as a child you wonder 'what the heck is wrong with that horse!' Anyway....all that work to the motorhome, and now it's gone....but you left us all with some wonderful memories Tim/Allison!

Fin is adorable so that's why I had to keep dating her until she agreed to marry me. Have to give a big shoutout to Mountain Modern Life for all our design stuff. We've talked to them a bit in the past and they know how shamelessly "inspired" we were by their renovation. The black kitchen cabinets DO pick up quite a share of dust though!

Great vid. I really appreciate it at this moment. We had a big RV upgrade purchase fall through yesterday and had to drive back across a few states to take the 4 sale sign off of our previous RV. After a full car ride and night of sulking we woke up inspired to completely redo our RV including something already named "SuperCouch!" Watching your vid made me feel good about what we are doing and even added a twinge of excitement. Lemonade out of Lemons I suppose but I thank you! We plan on making a vid of the whole debacle and Reno. I hope it's 1/2 as good and inspiring as yours. Thanks again! =)

Well if the paint looks good from the other side of the world on a 10 inch screen- I think we're good! Finny must have been having the beer after every fifteen minutes of painting because I somehow spent all my time on cleanup- scraping paint off the floor, ceiling, trim, etc. Like cleaning up after preschool fingerpaint session...

Congrats! Renovations look great. :) My husband and I are starting ours this weekend to prep for full-time travel as we run my business from the road, and we're actually doing a a similar color scheme with the black/white! Did you have any problems with strong paint/primer fumes or smell while painting? We are planning on opening up all the windows/doors while we work, but wondering if it's worth getting some respirator masks since it's a really small space!

  • @timandfin

    @timandfin

    6 жыл бұрын

Hi Jordan! Congrats on the recent purchase- see that you might have just got it in the past couple days since your video is from two days ago? No problems with paint/primer fumes when painting at all. All of the paint we used was latex- so no strong spirits or oils to make it terrible in there. We were really fine with just having all the windows/doors open while we worked and we ran a box fan in addition to the RV house fan at night to help ventilate- but more so to help things dry faster. I think we mentioned it in this video but our biggest challenge was waiting for things to dry properly between coats. It took 2-3 coats of primer and 2-3 coats of paint on everything, in addition to acrylic sealer that we put on the cabinets for a final coat. We tried to rush things on the bathroom cabinets and ended up having to strip off paint and start over because it would have never dried! (might have been that Florida humidity though) I truly wish you and your husband the best of luck on the upcoming renovation. Its good to know going in that it's a complete PITA and make the most of it.

We're super happy with the couch right now though and glad we picked this one. It's big enough that we've occasionally had people sleep on just the couch part without even using the pull out bed.

@@timandfin great! we are going to tear our out too, curious if we should avoid something. Also - I am looking for a more wide angle lens for my camera and was curious what you guys use? it works so great with the shotgun mic you have on your camera. right now i use a 50mm and have to use a zoom recorder because im so far from my subject. curious if you do a 24 prime lens situation or like a 10-18 zoom. I love your content!

Paint RV cabinets in JUST 2 Months !

We just bought an RV and want to paint as well. Everyone says it takes a long time, but how long? My husband and I plan to take off a month to work on the RV reno full time. We'd had a week in mind to take care of all the painting. Is that realistic? We'll be in FL doing the reno as well. Also, did you do the floors? We've seen several different comments on taking up the carpet and replacing with hardwood, and vinyl. Any tips on that? We have a slide that we're a little concerned with making taking up the carpet, and not sure if the hardwoods will be to thick for the slide to work. You've done such a great job!!!! BTW, we're living abroad in Kyrgyzstan, so the timing is hard to estimate as we're not in the US to take measurements ect...trying to plan all this in advance is a little challenging! Many thanks for your tips!

Here's the thing with painting an RV just in my experience. I had the same knee jerk "How long could it take?" reaction to all these videos complaining about painting taking forever. If you're planning on painting white, you need to do two coats of primer, 2-3 coats of paint, and a coat of acrylic sealant so everything doesn't chip right away. That in itself isn't terrible. The bigger thing is patience- you need to let the paint dry enough otherwise it gets that tacky feeling and will have it for a REALLY. LONG. TIME. We tried to give our primer at least 24-48 hours between coats and the paint sometimes needed 3 days to dry adequately. Some of this might be due to the FLorida humidity. We bought the RV with the original carpeting torn out of the main floor and replaced with a nice vinyl interlocking floor. The slide works great over the floor but is leaving very small scratches from the in and out motion where the rollers from he slider sit on top of the floor. It's totally up to the individual but I would skip putting real wood in a camper- with the temp changes and the abuse they take I think real wood would be a lot more work. Just our two cents!

The timing now makes much more sense, given the humidity and need to let it dry completely between coats. Thank you very much for the insight!

Got to let it dry! We ended up having to completely redo the bathroom. The Tsunami color for some reason took FOREVER to dry and we got a little greedy with applying too many coats. Lessons learned and we literally put the cabinet doors out in the sun for three days between coats after that. I called it “baking them”

That was a Target t-shirt. Somehow, both Fin and I had purchased one separately before we even started dating. Then we found out we had matching shirts one day.
