RV REMODEL: 2003 Jayco Jayflight 31BHS Travel Trailer Renovation and Camper Remodel

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We made more modifications here: • RV Upgrades! Honeywell...
On July 17, 2020, we purchased a 2003 Jayco Jayflight 31 BHS RV, sort of on a whim. We had always talked about getting ourselves a camper, but figured it might be a couple years down the road yet. The opportunity presented itself, so we pulled it home.
When we originally purchased the camper, we had plans to re-do the flooring and put some paint on the walls and cabinets. Once we started digging into it after a couple days, we found some water damage and determined more work was needed. It QUICKLY turned into a full blown gutted RV remodel! Our goal was to get it ready for use by Labor Day weekend, which we met by about 3-4 days!

    Thanks for sharing! I have a 2003 Jayco Jay Flight 21fb and did some reno myself, and it's nice to see a reno on the "larger" model from what I have. I know youve since sold it but it still continues to help others with like-minded models.

    Looks very clean, great job! One thing you may wanna consider, coming from someone that's owned many RVs! To save you alot of trouble in the longrun, remove the crank up antenna, patch the hole in the roof with lap sealant and cover the inside hole where the crank came through the ceiling with a smoke/fire alarm! Those antenna are notorious for leaking around the worm gear shaft!

    That's good to know Dwayne. I've been on the fence with mine, considering I never watch TV. How big is the hole left over when you remove the antenna? Is it a big gaping hole that needs a plug? Or is it just a bolt hole? Never pulled one of those silly things before, but I really want to do what you describe.

    You really gave this trailer new life! It looks so much better, love the new flooring! The white on the cabinets makes them look brand new! We bought a 2006 Jayco Designer 5th wheel that had been very well cared for in 2019. We are using it in original condition. We did have to replace the kitchen faucet because the old one started leaking but everything else is original and works fine. We had two brand new top of the line Jayco 5th wheels, a 2013 Pinnacle and a 2015 Eagle Premier. Sold both due to mechanical problems that recurred again and again and dealership couldn't seem b fix them. The 2006 works perfectly every time and that is much appreciated!!

    Way to breath some new life into what most would consider a totaled RV with all the wall rot/water damage, very well done. Now she's ready to continue to create some awesome memories for your family and doing that remodel/refit together I'm sure has already created more than a few. The series on doing this was well shot and explained with just enough detail to help someone else consider doing it. Without getting boring or dry just to the point and getting it done. Again, well done to you and the Misses and I'm sure the little ones had a blast helping. God Bless and safe travels...

    I had the same water damage with our 2001 Jayco Qwest. The bunks and bathroom in the same location. Identical bathroom cabinet. We had water damage in the front and rear too. Completely rebuilt the front and rear. Also installed new roof. Remodeled the inside everything except the kitchen cabinets. Good job on your rebuild and remodel!

    Hello! Thanks for the nice words! We are not carpenters per say but have a lot of experience in carpentry. We built the master bed and couch. Couch I saw a couple designs similar on the web and came up with our own design. The dinette bench's I saw a video of some similar and we liked them so built something similar. Table is the original one that we stained and poly'd. Then I installed 1.5" black pipe for supports, with a piece of angle aluminum holding it on the wall.

    26:15 @inthenorthwoods excellent video and beautiful Reno!! We have a 1999 jayco we are about to tear into and can only hope it turns out as lovely as yours. I’d love to ask a couple questions about your flooring. I heard on the video you changed your mind in what you were going to use due to temperature ratings. The photo shows boxes of SPC rigid core flooring so we assume that’s what you used. I read you sold the rv but did use it for a year or so and would love to know how the flooring held up with the temperature changes?

  • @OutdoorsEngineer

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    9 ай бұрын

    Yep, sold it. The only time I noticed an issue with it was when the rig was really cold and then we turned the furnace on. The flooring around the vents in the floor would raise up a bit because of the expansion due to the heat. Once everything equalized it was fine. Everything else was great!

    Now after awhile, how did the white paint hold up with the kids and moving things around? I did up an old airstream and painted the walls white and then used a feather duster and an off white paint to add some interest to the walls and also help to hide slight imperfections. It worked great.

  • @OutdoorsEngineer

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    2 жыл бұрын

    We sold the rig in September but got to use it for about a year off and on. The paint on the cabinets, if scratched, would come off. Walls held up well. We didn't do any sanding on the cabinets which is probably the reason the paint was easily removed.

    Are there any restrictions on type or thicknesses because of the slide out?

  • @OutdoorsEngineer

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    @@bridgettmoody1475 Certainly. There is plastic piece the slide rubs on and we made sure the flooring was below that. Even still, I wanted to get flooring that was as thin as possible to minimize any issues with the slide moving over the top. I lay pieces of scrap flooring on the floor to be under the slide as it slides in.

    First of all, wow! Very nice remodel! We have the same camper, except the fifth wheel version, and we are wanting to remodel it as well! Been looking for ideas and it was nice to find the same camper to see real results! I do have a question for you, how well has the flooring done while traveling? I’ve read mixed reviews on this type of flooring separating during travel or in storage during winter months. So we are trying to figure out which way to go on that

  • @OutdoorsEngineer

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    We have so far only taken it on two trips/weekends. The flooring was fine for that. I did notice one of the short joints in one location opened up ever so slightly in the flooring. I plan to take a mallet to pound it back together when I have a chance. Key thing is to follow manufacturers instructions to make sure there is adequate space on the boundary for expansion/contraction. I probably had ours a little too tight to the wall in spots because the quarter round i installed covers a lot! Time will tell i suppose. We just figure for the small investment in the vinyl flooring the trade off is huge innot having the carpet. Can always replace it in the future for another few hundred in material. I made sure to get a flooring that is rated for the large temperature range in my location. We can go from -30 to +90 within the calendar year. Some people suggest the life proof flooring as an option too. Thing is, all flooring will expand and contract. The floating flooring needs room to expand and contract. Thank you for watching! Let me know if you have any more questions!

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    Sure! 1. Removed the old corner seals. This is when I determined I needed to repair some of the wall structure. 2. Removed siding / portions of walls in areas of rot. 3. Rebuilt the walls that were rotted/replaced certain parts. 4. Reinstalled the walls and siding. 5. Cleaned up existing siding corners. Removed old caulking and sealants. 6. Taped the corners using Dicor Seal Tite 7. Placed butyl sealant on top of the tape, under the corner trim. 8. Installed the corner trim and vinyl insert molding 9. Used Proflex RV sealant and sealed along the edges of the corner trim. Hope this helps!

    That’s amazing. What I’m wondering is HOW did you know there was water damage behind there? And how did you know there wasn’t any near the other windows or sink area? I’m looking to buy a used RV and renovate it as well, but if there aren’t any obvious signs I’m wondering how will I know 🤔😰

  • @OutdoorsEngineer

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    Жыл бұрын

    If the water damage is bad enough, you can feel on the inside of the rig in the corners. The inside walls are typically luan and if there has been long water exposure, the walls will be soft. In our case, I found soft spots in the corners. For the windows, we actually pulled out every window and I inspected around them. They actually were all in great shape. So feel on the inside in the corners of the rig, underneath windows. Look for discoloration in the ceiling. Feel for soft spots. If it is a smooth sided rig on the outside, look for delamination (almost like large bubbles) where the fiberglass separates from the luan/wall framing. Another option is to bring a screw driver with a #2 square bit. Outside, pull the vinyl insert trim and then pull some screws out. If they are rusted, then you know there was water. Crawl up on the roof an look for any holes in the sealant. Inspect very closely the corner trim and any seals and look for any holes/gaps in the sealant. It is very hard to know on purchase to see if there is any water damage, or bad water damage. Take your time on inspection and you can usually avoid the HUGE problems.

    We did not. The floor, while discolored, was not damaged. Most likely it comes from the trim on the exterior of the slide. I removed vinyl insert and then removed one screw at a time, caulking each screw. Then I caulked along the edge as well, using RV caulk. I freshened all of the caulk seams, redoing the most suspect ones.

    How did you end up doing the transition piece for the floor on the slide out?

  • @OutdoorsEngineer

    @OutdoorsEngineer

    2 жыл бұрын

    I took two 2x6's and carefully ripped them down on the table saw. Took some test cuts of course but it worked out nicely. Sanded it down to round off the sharp corners and I then attached it to the slide and when the slide was fully extended the transition piece rested nicely on the floor. If I remember correctly it took some fancy angles transitioning from the floor to the slide. 1/8 thick on the outside edges and about 3/8" thick at the middle/attachment area on the slide.

    I believe it was the Great Lakes Defender Series, and we got it from Menards. I could/would recommend also LifeProof from Home Depot. Make sure you check the specifications/instructions regarding temperature variations. I know the stuff we used, if it went from cold to rapidly warm, there would be areas that lifted a bit from expansion. No joints came apart though. Once it warmed evenly it was fine. But there are some that say do not install if temps will get below 50 or 60.
