RV Inverter Install for Full Time RV Life | Changing Lanes!

⚠️⚠️⚠️ NOTE! This inverter has been UPGRADED! See: • 🔋⚡️🔌 RV Inverter Upgra...
Want to run your TV, Coffee Maker, Microwave, etc using only battery power? We did! When boondocking, it was such a pain to have to fire up the generator just to make a pot of coffee or watch our night time TV. This Inverter project was in the plans from day one. Getting it done, however, took a LOT of research and planning. It's such a big project we needed to do it in non-disruptive stages so we could still live our lives in the rig. This video covers how we did just that!
UPDATE!
Since this post, we upgraded from the 2000W to the 3000W Inverter. Everything here is still accurate, but with DC wiring rated at 400A.
You can find all of the components in the Inverter / Battery section of our Amazon Store here: amzn.to/3eUZXAu

I did this same thing about 15 years ago. Newer inverters and Lithium batteries are game changers. Darn pricey though, and you chose the value option on the batteries. One thing I would add is a shunt to keep tabs on the battery capacity. Nicely done.

First off I love all your video's They a Great, you give me a lot of ideas. As I watched you install your inverter system it brought back a lot of memoirs. I installed a Inverter in my 5th wheel in 2015 and installed everything you did but my inverter is a Xantrex Freedom SW Series 3012 | 3000 Watt Inverter/Charger and I installed a Zamp 450 watt solar system. Everything has been working great. I love my solar system. We boondock a lot. What's great about the solar is it charges as I drive down the freeways so when we get were we are going to camp my batt are all charged up. The only time I have to use my genset is when it is cloudy or I run the A/C.

Great video. Great clip of Doc Brown haha! I applaud your crimping comment. Those hydraulic crimper are expensive, but so worth it. Hope you are doing well during this strange time. Stay well and hope to see you guys on the road one day.

Came back to watch this again Chad. Nice work! I am currently looking at the victron multiplusII. I like your thinking on the pass thru. We probably won't go big solar but we have an on board generator with autostart on our DRV. We only have to battle born lithium but may add at least 2 more. Thank you so much for your videos! You guys absolutely rock! Gator

The EMS was a cake walk compared to this for sure. 4 wires in 4 wires out and done. Might need a few feet of 6/3 romex. EMS should go between shore power and the ATS if you have one so it's usually pretty easy to route the wires with an ATS in the mix. The most difficult part was running the control cable (ran with the inverter control cable in this video). We will be doing a power management video in the near future and will cover the EMS install as part of that. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi TCB031. They're using the 50A Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C, which is an excellent product. If you have not done so already, you may want to have a look at the Hughes Autoformer RV220-50SP. It has advanced surge protection in addition to boosting voltage by up to 10%, protecting high current devices such as air conditioners. RVgeeks video E2NdhNa-ZTQ explains the benefits of this product well.

The Hughes is arguably a superior product.. with a matching price tag. 🙂 Our sensitive electronics (computer, NAS, etc) are on a UPS in the office, so the hughes might be overkill for our needs. But it's definitely a great option and has a lot more capability.

Very nice clean and well thought out install. You will find that running off those batteries will drain them pretty quick. Solar will help keep the batteries much happier. Solar has come way down in price so I don't think it will be as bad as you think especially if you're doing the install. Excellent video...thumbs up.

Changing Lanes ok so say you have the battery’s and the inverter under the rv inside a storage area in a sealed vented area and then ran your shore power inside over to the area you have the battery’s so nothing is seen behind closed doors? I’m saying this cause I am thinking of doing it this cheaper way and less of wiring and less permanent . Would this work and is a 4 6volt battery system with 3000 watt inverter enough for a tv and coffee pot ? Thanks

Great video. I'm definitely interested in the video of the EMS install because I have had that on my list of things to do for sometime now. WIll it be a detailed video or an overview similar to this?

It will be similar to this, but i will be able to go into a little more detail. But, honestly the EMS is super simple. 4 wires in and 4 wires out (ShorePower >> EMS >> ATS). Took about 2 hours. Most difficult part was the control cable routing.

It is strange they aren't an option for GDRV either. Certainly easier to do the wiring when it's being built... They should have a "boondockers" package with upgraded batteries and inverter with optional solar.
