RV Inverter Install for Full Time RV Life | Changing Lanes!
⚠️⚠️⚠️ NOTE! This inverter has been UPGRADED! See: • 🔋⚡️🔌 RV Inverter Upgra...
Want to run your TV, Coffee Maker, Microwave, etc using only battery power? We did! When boondocking, it was such a pain to have to fire up the generator just to make a pot of coffee or watch our night time TV. This Inverter project was in the plans from day one. Getting it done, however, took a LOT of research and planning. It's such a big project we needed to do it in non-disruptive stages so we could still live our lives in the rig. This video covers how we did just that!
UPDATE!
Since this post, we upgraded from the 2000W to the 3000W Inverter. Everything here is still accurate, but with DC wiring rated at 400A.
You can find all of the components in the Inverter / Battery section of our Amazon Store here: amzn.to/3eUZXAu

I showed this video to my brother who is a Master Electrician. He sends his “kudo’s” and congratulations to you. You did an excellent job!!
Chad...you are simply AMAZING! I’ve got no clue what your professional background is (other than the generic “Navy”) but I’m always impressed with how calm, collected and generally supportive you are in every challenge you, Tara and Daisy are faced with. You are an inspiration.

Thanks! 😊 I was an Aviation Electronics Tech (AT)... so at least I do have some professional training on the electronics stuff.. LOL
This is virtually a timeless tutorial. Enjoyed it very much and big high five to you, Chad. Your planning and preparation made it step thru so logically and safely. So well done! 👍
This is why I hire someone. Extremely impressed.
Love this video!! I have an electrical engineering background so I can truly appreciate what you had to do through to make this happen!!!! Great work!
Wow. What a lot of work but well worth it I'm sure. You obviously know what you're doing Chad. Good job
Kudo's to you for an amazing job. I envy people with skills like yours. I'm 64 and don't know half of what you know about electrical. Now you can watch Lucy. Take care and be safe.
I love the way you planned this all out and executed it. Great explanation of everything too. Great job on the video. I enjoyed it... but I'm a geek, so....
Wow what a complex job that install was. At least to a lay person. Great work on explaining what it was you did even though it was all over my head I enjoyed watching it. Thanks and keep up the great work.
This is my next project and you have answered several of my questions with this video. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
These videos always get to me, there is a lot of good info but it always seems money is no object. Most people can’t afford to do half this stuff
Excellent video!! Much appreciated. You guys make a great couple!
I just wanted to thank you both for all your informative videos. I’m researching all aspects of rv’ing ( not full time ) and have been binge watching you and a few others. Many thanks, safe & fun travels to you.

I could never recreate this for fear of messing something up BUT I understood all of what you said and I appreciate that so much!
I'm impressed!! That is so cool! Thanks for the video.
Man that is quite the process. Electrical is something most people know nothing about.
Another job accomplished. Fantastic work. Well executed project.
Hey Chad, Thanks for all your content. Good to see you putting that awesome electronics training to good use. Former AT here.
Awesome video, very helpful, my wife and I are getting ready to move into our cyclone full time, and I will be coming back to this later down the road to do this set up, thanks for sharing, maybe we will meet ya on the road someday.
You two are so precious. Love the information you put out…but especially the humor attached to it😂
Awesome install!!! Great video step by step a kid could follow! Thanks so much for all y’alls videos and the real deal!!!
Really enjoying your videos. My wife and I are looking at the full time RV lifestyle in two years when our youngest graduates and goes on to college. Love all your how to vids, and the office was a huge WIN for us.. We will both be working from the office while we travel. Thanks again and keep them coming.

I only have a million questions, i saw the begining of this video when it first came out but I didnt understand much of it BUT I just bought a 3500w puresinewave and 470ah batts with solar panels and it makes sense now, your a genius !
Great job! I have been waiting for this one. Thank you for sharing.
Great job and super video! I have watched a few of these install videos and this was was one of the best. Most of them add solar at the same time which just makes it more complex. We have a fiver and the lithium is too rich for us as well. Thanks again !!
As with all your videos, thank you! Incredibly helpful and enjoyable. Thanks for sharing.
I have been watching you guys for some time . Thanks for the inverter stuff. I have shore power and converter, but need to have it switch on its own . And I'm going to check out your batteries as well.
Awesome video! Great job!!!
Great video! Thanks for the detailed explanation!
Very well done. Great explanations and reasoning. Clean work!
Good vid, and nicely explained. Calm, cool, and in fairly nontechnical. Watched it as I am comparing it to my solar setup for my barn. Nice job.
Thumbs up....Good job Chad and video with helpful installation.

Awesome and a different approach then most I've seen. I like the way you broke it up into individual projects and did all the non-disruptive ones first. I have a 600A inverter just to run one or two outlets for TV, etc and it has been sitting in my garage for 2 years! LOL This may be the incentive I need.

Wow! Lots of info! This is great! I really love your channel. My wife and I look forward to RVing full time at some point in the distant future. For now we enjoy lots of weekend camping in our 28’ travel trailer... when we go full time, we plan to upgrade the truck and get a 5th wheel toy hauler. It’ll be nice to have my HD Street Glide along with us!
Superb job with this video.
Awsome job on that battery box

Nice job. I learned a lot. Thanks.
The fact you were able to explain exactly what you did with no notes is impressive. Wow. It's equally impressive how your wife was able to create this video piece by piece since it was all jibberish to her. Oh, love your cable management. That's the sign of a respectable IT guy. I loved the cartoon thoughts popping up from your wife. It’s what happens when I explain something like this to my wife, lol
I did this same thing about 15 years ago. Newer inverters and Lithium batteries are game changers. Darn pricey though, and you chose the value option on the batteries. One thing I would add is a shunt to keep tabs on the battery capacity. Nicely done.
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
Yea.. went cheaper on the batteries knowing those could be easily upgraded in place later. We already have the Victron BMV-712 (shunted) Battery Monitor - (amzn.to/2NUyGUS) sitting in the office ready to install when I get some free time. Of course there will be a video on that as well.
You guys are awesome!!
Very nice job explaining. I am in the process of doing the same job as we speak. So good I subscribed.
This is perfect for me…. I’m right in the middle of this same project. I’m going with Lithium but you’ve answered a couple questions I had, plus the location of your inverter is a game changer for me…. I was wondering where I’d locate mine and I think I may be able to do the same. Thank you so much for all the work that went into this production. High regards!
Nice video and work...enjoyed.
Great Video Chad! Thank you for getting to the point with all steps! I have done the same with Progressive EMS first before the surge guard ATS. I am concerned with a time space continuum.
Great job!
Nice job and well planned out; love the idea of doing as much as possible without "killing" all coach power, then, it's minimal down-time (power-wise). Good work. Be Safe!

Well put together. Love how you broke it down. I fit into the category of a little info is dangerous with electrical stuff. There always seems to be something else to know about that could cause harm or disaster with electrical. Just when I think I know enough to get started, someone starts talking about phase or sine wave... lol Keep the vids coming

Thank you for making the videos. I just discovered your channel searching for advice on how to do exactly what you have done here. I never thought of leaving the converter in my RV but I like that idea. We are taking a trip to Las Vegas and Pomona CA next month and will definitely be doing this upgrade before we go as we have the same frustration with making coffee in the morning and watching a movie at night when parked close to others at the racetrack or campground.

First off I love all your video's They a Great, you give me a lot of ideas. As I watched you install your inverter system it brought back a lot of memoirs. I installed a Inverter in my 5th wheel in 2015 and installed everything you did but my inverter is a Xantrex Freedom SW Series 3012 | 3000 Watt Inverter/Charger and I installed a Zamp 450 watt solar system. Everything has been working great. I love my solar system. We boondock a lot. What's great about the solar is it charges as I drive down the freeways so when we get were we are going to camp my batt are all charged up. The only time I have to use my genset is when it is cloudy or I run the A/C.

All depends on load. For what we use it for (coffee, TV, etc), it lasts all night and into the next day. But we haven't really pushed it to a full test. Will be doing that after I get our battery monitor installed and we film a power management video.

Came back to watch this again Chad. Nice work! I am currently looking at the victron multiplusII. I like your thinking on the pass thru. We probably won't go big solar but we have an on board generator with autostart on our DRV. We only have to battle born lithium but may add at least 2 more. Thank you so much for your videos! You guys absolutely rock! Gator
Cool video
Great job
Excellent video! Can't wait for the EMS install, that is my next project.
@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
The EMS was a cake walk compared to this for sure. 4 wires in 4 wires out and done. Might need a few feet of 6/3 romex. EMS should go between shore power and the ATS if you have one so it's usually pretty easy to route the wires with an ATS in the mix. The most difficult part was running the control cable (ran with the inverter control cable in this video). We will be doing a power management video in the near future and will cover the EMS install as part of that. Good luck and thanks for watching!

Hi TCB031. They're using the 50A Progressive Industries EMS-HW50C, which is an excellent product. If you have not done so already, you may want to have a look at the Hughes Autoformer RV220-50SP. It has advanced surge protection in addition to boosting voltage by up to 10%, protecting high current devices such as air conditioners. RVgeeks video E2NdhNa-ZTQ explains the benefits of this product well.
@ChangingLanes

The Hughes is arguably a superior product.. with a matching price tag. 🙂 Our sensitive electronics (computer, NAS, etc) are on a UPS in the office, so the hughes might be overkill for our needs. But it's definitely a great option and has a lot more capability.
Love the video will get me started on mine.

Very nice clean and well thought out install. You will find that running off those batteries will drain them pretty quick. Solar will help keep the batteries much happier. Solar has come way down in price so I don't think it will be as bad as you think especially if you're doing the install. Excellent video...thumbs up.

Changing Lanes ok so say you have the battery’s and the inverter under the rv inside a storage area in a sealed vented area and then ran your shore power inside over to the area you have the battery’s so nothing is seen behind closed doors? I’m saying this cause I am thinking of doing it this cheaper way and less of wiring and less permanent . Would this work and is a 4 6volt battery system with 3000 watt inverter enough for a tv and coffee pot ? Thanks

@ChangingLanes
5 жыл бұрын
It will be similar to this, but i will be able to go into a little more detail. But, honestly the EMS is super simple. 4 wires in and 4 wires out (ShorePower >> EMS >> ATS). Took about 2 hours. Most difficult part was the control cable routing.
