RV Beginner DIY: How to repack wheel bearings

Every 12 months or 12,000 miles, you should replace or repack your RV wheel bearings. We once paid a lot of money for an RV dealership to do this, but our friend (Rob) from ‪@OurlifeWhirlwind‬ helped us make a tutorial on how to do this ourselves. As a beginner, it took us ~1hr per wheel (Total of 4 hours) and was much simpler than we ever imagined.
Things you'll need to do this:
- How to jack up the rig and remove the wheel
- New wheel bearing grease seals (amzn.to/3Yf7rpy)
- Wheel bearing grease (amzn.to/3FIU21K)
- Brake Parts Cleaner (amzn.to/3uCE2Ih)
- Cheap Bearing packer tool (amzn.to/3iTlzoa)
- OR Quality bearing packer tool (amzn.to/3FFkgCb)
- Grease Gun (amzn.to/3BmZkxa)
- Bearing seal puller (amzn.to/3hdk4AP)
- Paper Towels (amzn.to/3hdk4AP)
- Hand Cleaner (amzn.to/3Yd6YnG)

Great demonstration video, especially with specifics like hand tightening the nut. Something a lot of home mechanics don't know about. Great job.

Good job on repacking the bearings. I've repacted bearings before, but just always putting the grease in the Palm of my hand .

The bearing packer that you were using works better if you turn the bearing the other way around; put a small side in first.

Good job! Trick to getting the nut on is to place it on and turn it slowly in the wrong direction. Turn it until you feel a small click, that is the nut dropping into position on the thread line. Great job though! 👍👍 Rob, was he a good student? 🤣😎

Great Job mate. Head over to Harber Freight some time and you your self a box of nitrate gloves...grease and oil will never bug you again. My Dad taught us how to load bearings by hand and to be honest I like it better than bearing loaders...there kinda messy ..oh and when your at Harber Freight...get you a air operated grease gun 🙂‼️

I'll never understand why people do a proper bearing back to then, after the fact, feel it necessary to squirt a bunch of extra grease in through the zerk which serves absolutely no useful purpose other than possibly blow out the new rear seal you just installed...

Never used, let alone heard of a bering packer. Always just used my hands and fingers. Not much messier than what you're doing, just as effective, and definitely quicker and easier.

yup, have seen it done. Many swear its just as good, but have also heard it's not as effective. Who knows :)

@Brazen Brits the trick is you have to really clean the bearings, and your pushing the new grease all the way through. You still have to pump the extra into the zerk fitting. When I do mine in the spring, you can come help.😂😎

Good job. Do you have something against lubricating the moving parts on the brakes? Technically, the center of the hub shouldn't be packed more than 50%.

Thank you Laurence for this DIY video. Glad you were able fix the wheel bearings yourself instead of paying someone else to do it. Natalie had to be glad to have you around. Are the bearings and tiered working well? Great job! 👍Hope you both have a great week!

Curious what did this DIY method cost compared to taking it to a shop? What am I going to save, especially after buying all that extra soap.

  • @BrazenBrits

Hi Wil, we estimate that you could save between $300 and $500. It’s obviously cheaper each time once you have bought the tools. You’re right though, it is messy and time consuming.

This was actually an old unused camp host site. Both the bench and fire pit were broken and due to be recycled. I actually had a clip explaining that, but decided to cut it from the video. We’ll spotted though 👍
