Gullit vs Baresi, what a battle. I never loved Gullit as much as when he played for Sampdoria. What an incredible era this was for Serie A

I remember well. Gullit was even more a beast during his time at Sampdoria

Yeah he had his best goals return in a Serie A season, 15 I think- I think he was on loan at Samp for that season. Promptly recalled to Milan after that....

2021. One of the best Sampdoria ever...Gullit(of course), Mancini (already crack), David Platt, Pagliuca, Evani, and the underrated Atilio Lombardo, one of the most complete midfielders at that time.....Great memories...

Do not forget Katanec.

I was the biggest Milan fan growing up. Only twice I supported their opponents. This was one time. The other is when they played against Ajax in the Champions League...I was protesting the way the club treated Gullit and showed solidarity with Rijkaard when he left in protest as well.

Imagane he was only 31 and Milan thought he was over the top. Clearly a huge mistake. I have never seen a better all-around fotballer in my life. He could play everywhere, maybe even goalie? Intelligent as well.

You can tell Gullit practised that celebration in the bathroom mirror everyday after he signed for Sampdoria.

I REMEMBER THIS GAME LIKE YESTERDAY✅ THE GLORY OF THE AC MILAN STARTED FROM RUUD GULLIT 1987.... THE INVESTING OF THE PREMIER LEAGUE STARTED CHELSEA'S GULLIT. BEFORE HIM NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY IN ENGLAND

As a Milan fan I always loved that sampdoria jersey, wanted to get gullit’s but it was hard to find loving in Miami in the 90’s.

I remember watching this match as a 9 years old little Milanisti. I thought we're going to win the match since we lead 2-0 before the break. But, Gullit was amazing. He was everywhere: right back, all sides of the midfield, flanks, forwards, everywhere! And when finally we lost 3-2, I was stunned in disbelief. I remember then I hated Galliani for sending to Sampdoria because he was 31 years old and we already had Savicevic, Boban, Papin, and Laudrup as our new creative forces. But, with Gullit Sampdoria got their last piece of the puzzle. Gullit complimented Mancini, David Platt, Srecko Katanec, Vladimir Jugovic, Sinisa Mihajlovic, Attilio Lombardo, and Gianluca Pagliuca. And, boom, they won the scudetto that season. I remember this match was a big match back then. But, now I watch it again and I realize how much football has developed now. The complexities of the match strategy, the pace, and the technical aspects of the game have made football much more interesting. I think the revolution of football begun in 1996/997 with the emergence of the mercurial talents like Del Piero, Totti, Nesta, Beckham, Raul, Henry, Trezeguet, Kluivert, van Nistelrooy, Shevchenko, Buffon, Owen, Seedorf, Scholes, Aimar, Ballack, and surely the phenomenon himself, Ronaldo. This generation had revolutionized football to the next level after the previous 'generation 72/73 like Zidane, Rui Costa, Figo, Giggs started this revolution not too long before them. Ronaldo and co became the generation who have influenced the later generation until I think football reach its peak in 2012 to 2014 with its masters like Pirlo, Xavi, Iniesta, Xabi Alonso, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Aguero, Tevez, Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Reus, Ozil, Götze, van Persie, Robben, Sneijder, David Villa, Ibrahimovic, Hazard, Busquets, Ribery, and absolutely, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. All in all, personally I think the peak of football is started from the 2006 World Cup until the 2014 World Cup.

i absolutely agree, but i feel barcelona’s 2015 champions league campaign should be included. But yes, that was certainly the peak of football and i agree that the revolution began in the mid to late nineties. It’s cool to see a comment from someone who understands football and doesn’t let their judgement be clouded by nostalgia

Anyway, maybe you're right, football had reached its peak in 2015 with the devastating Barcelona led by their superstars Messi, Suarez, and Neymar. Even though I personally think 2015 is also the beginning of the decline of football because afterwards we're no longer have the beautiful team like that magical Barcelona again. I know people might say that Real Madrid who won the champions league in three consecutive seasons were great. But, I don't put them on the same level with Pep's Barcelona since I think too many controversies with Madrid winning like the referee's decision that benefitted them, or something like that. Therefore I think the 2014 World Cup is the final year of the peak of football that we know.
