Thank you so much for saying "Now I know there is more to libraries"! We do more than keep a building full of books but everyone doesn't seem to understand that. (BTW I still get to stamp books and periodicals with the name of our library. :0) ) -An actual librarian in Sweden

Erik Rensberger Public libraries are of course focused on helping people find information they need or stories they enjoy. Today public libraries are also one of the last undemanding meeting places for people of all walks of life. Being a meeting place is of course great but might cut in to the peace and quiet that some people want. Even though there is a difference between a public library and a university library there should not be screaming and there is usually a specific "quiet room" for those who need it. I'm Swedish but here public libraries often have stages for plays, meetings with authors. lectures, concerts etc. We often have a room for art exhibits. We work with schools to support education in information science (badly needed in a time of alternative facts!) and reading even if that's mostly a job for school libraries. We help new Swedes learn Swedish and learn about Sweden with language cafés and more. We provide activities focused on culture like art workshops, book clubs, writing workshops and Harry Potter days. We bring books to those who can't visit us like the elderly or people who have broken their leg. We help people bridge the digital gap and learn about computers. We work with preschools to inform new parents about the importance of reading and language development. We help people with reading disorders find tools to aid them. I could probably think of more if I tried... Being a tired librarian isn't hard when people have a library card! :0)

I understand that you feel like all libraries should be calm and quiet. We shouldn't allow loud noises like playing music on your phone or shouting across the room. If it's possible we should try to have seperate areas for programs or schedule programs outside of opening hours. But it seems like you're after a university library with absolute silence for research. A lot of programs would be cut. Helping seniors explore the web in a senior surf class, a lecture about local history or a language café helping new citizens to learn a new language might all bleed into the library if you're not lucky. There aren't a lot of places in Sweden that have theaters or galleries. In many places with libraries without the best, soundproof spaces we would give up the last host of cultural events. There would no longer be anywhere for people of all walks of life to meet and talk. We would even have to turn away people who might not be able to be quiet like small children or people with autism. University libraries have a different purpose instead: supporting specific educations. Public libraries don't. In my opinion we would become pretty pointless and deserted. I would personally be sad to lose the opportunity to listen to authors, join a bookclub or just have an unexpected conversation. You don't have to agree of course, it's just my opinion.
