The memories i have of rusty wallace and his career are the moments you are showing me. I love NASCAR for the sounds and never really dove into the men or women or teams behind the cars until you started making these videos. Its really awesome how much i am enjoying learning about the history of motorsports. Thank you Logan and Mitchell.

I have a vintage 88 Gatorade windbreaker that I got at Daytona when I was a kid. We would watch the 500, camp out in the infield, and watch my dad race his motorcycle the next weekend. I grew up 15 min away from DIS. All my early racing experience as a kid started there. My older brother got to spread our dad's ashes at DIS. I have friend on the inside and got access to the track when no one was there.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I'm so honored that you used a few of my shop photos for this video! Racing (and Rusty Wallace), were such a big part of my life during that time, and to see him and my old photos come together at the same time is amazing. His talk of the secretary, who allowed me in to take photos, brings back great memories. I'll never forget seeing a dumpster full of used Kodiak sheet metal, before it even became popular as a collectable. Outstanding video!

Been several days late to the party for this video but finally able to watched this and again Stapleton, thanks for posting! To me the stories being told here are gold! Just a quick story of my own: when I was 16 I worked at a jewel food store in Elmhurst, IL. There was a manager by the name Debbie Newberry who worked there. One day I was in the lunchroom sketching out my newest drawing of Rusty Wallace's Miller car when she walked by me and asked if I was into nascar. Well of course I was, I exclaimed! She asked if I can make another skit of that drawing for her and in returned she would get me something old that's nascar related. I agreed. Once I gave her the drawing (which she loved) she gave me a double sided photo of RCR's Wrangler 85/86 unocal pit crew champs. Which I was floored when i saw it. I asked how she got this, she told me she use to be part of the pit crew for Rusty Wallace's ASA team as a time and score keeper. Who knew?! Wish I could of asked Rusty If he still remember's her.. Also that same store, "Fearless" Freddy Lorenzen use to come in all the time buying groceries. I got few stories about him as well...

Man, this is some great history. My Dad, Jimmy Makar (10:25), worked with Rusty and it was really cool to see some photos of them together that I've never seen before (0:26). I'm going to show him this video to see if he can add on any cool stories.

Yea we know who your dad is. Damn that makes me feel old. I remember watching them win the 2000 Winston cup. Pretty cool man.

Rusty looks happy to have taken this trip down memory lane. He seems like a pretty humble down to earth guy.

I agree with that completely. On the way out he pulled over to take some pictures before driving away. Pretty special to see that. He is very proud of what he’s accomplished and rightfully so. What’s the point of living a life of high achievement if you don’t allow yourself to enjoy it afterwards?

"It was a great career, I miss it" Yes it was, Rusty. I miss the hell out of this era.

When a Stapleton video leads off with a NASCAR legend saying “I’ve got a story for this doggone building right here…”, time to grab a beer, sit down and enjoy the ride.

Rusty was my hero. I was able to get his autograph onece when he came to Baton Rouge. I left early from work to get it. Man I miss watching him drive.

Man I am so glad you are committed to recording as much NASCAR history as you can before it's gone. Great listening to Rusty talk about his memories of the shop and his time there. Thx!!

Rusty is so humble. He probably has no idea how much he means to people. He was one of my idols growing up and still is. I never got to see him win a championship but was around to see that legendary 2 car on the track. You are so lucky to share a moment with him like this. I would love to meet Rusty some day, that would be cool.

Find Kenny Schrader....he would be a great interview.

Rusty was the most genuinely polite driver I met. He stayed over after Darlington in 1993 and signed autographs for us all through the fence. We could tell he was hot and exhausted but we appreciated it.

Wow Rusty Wallace. I thought he fell off the planet. I guess he's enjoying retirement. I went to my first NASCAR Race in 1966 at Rockingham. I was 6 years old. It was something that my Dad and I really enjoyed. My Dad is 89 and I'm 62 now. We still enjoy Nascar. My Dad back in the day was a David Pearson fan and I was a Richard Petty fan. But after Richard retired I went with Rusty. Now I just want to see a good race.

I'm from Australia but I follow 90's NASCAR and this is sick. Showing all the old drivers. Awesome guys!! Jesse Heber

Friggin COOL.. I was a teenager when Rusty was at the height of his career.. I used to love watching the road course races the most. I really miss the way Nascar used to be. These days it's mostly a "spec racing" series.

Awesome! Those guys were so guarded back in the day. U never saw them like this. I believe Rusty Was having a Good Time! You could just see his face light up! Favorite Moment in Rusty’s Career? The All Star Race where he turned DW! Absolutely loved it! Listening to Rusty talk now. It Sheds some light on why he may have raced like that for 200 grand back then.

Mitch, it would be so awesome if you and Logan could meet up with Dale Jr. and take a tour of Dale Earnhardt Inc. I know its a long shot since Teresa is still there and is the current owner, but it would be so cool if this could ever happen. Thanks for considering my idea and keep up doing videos like this and keeping NASCAR history alive.

For my dad and I, our guy was Rusty! The 27 and 2 mgd car were the absolute best looking cars in NASCAR. Midnight ftw!

Him turning Darrell at the 1989 Winston and the fight that ensued after the race. Darrell had a famous quote after the race for Rusty “I hope he chokes on that $250,000.”

Another banger. Im 45 seeing all these locations and things are awesome. When I was growing I'd join all these fan clubs and I remember going on a weekend trip visiting all these shops and buying every modle car I could find back then and build them. Thanks for these man it's truly awesome

That day and eating breakfast with Darrell waltrip and bristol in 90 or 91 the fan club was huge for me at that age would of been 12 or 14. If I can those pic I'll send them. I really enjoy what you. Rusty was my son's favorite driver. The Kodiak Pontiac and the MGD Pontiac. Two of my favorite paint scheme. My two FAVORITE paint schemes, #28 white, black and gold Texaco Thunderbird and the iconic black and red Thunderbird Texaco. All driven by my man Davey Allison!

My Favorite and First Driver I ever pulled for. This was awesome, Rusty was a Great driver n personality for Nascar. He was Great on them short tracks.

Thank you for this history lesson young man. I went to my very first (of many) Winston Cup races at Dover, DE in May of 1987 (I was a mere 26 y.o. pup way back then). Rusty finished only mid-pack, but I became a fan of him that day, and remained loyal as he won the championship in ‘89. Thank you so much for unreeling memories and much enjoyment of a wonderful yesteryear. Much appreciation to both you and Logan for your work! 😊❤️😊

This is amazing. Dick Trickle’s shop would be an amazing journey, unfortunately he’s no longer with us.

I was not a big Rusty fan but he was good and had some great runs in that era. He and my man Dale going at it....loved it...He looks great. I stood right next to him at drag race when Bob Glidden won his last race. Rusty was there with Bob after the win at Englishtown. Ford had a big presence and he was there and they had a great time with the crowd.......He's a good guy and looks great...

Rusty!! Rusty Wallace, king of the Honda stores. I remember those commercials vividly.

I went to three Bristol races in the 90's and Rusty won every one I went to. I was a big Earnhardt fan but it was still cool to see him win. I like how he brought up "Days of Thunder". His cameo in the movie was classic Rusty.

I remember Rusty coaching me on the techniques of drafting on Nascar Dirt to Daytona on PlayStation 2! Jokes aside this is an awesome video and I did not hesitate clicking on this to watch while having lunch.

When I was in high school in the early 90s Rusty opened a steakhouse called “Rusty’s #2” in my hometown of Pawleys Island, SC. I thought it was awesome that a nascar legend would pick my little one horse, twenty course town to start a restaurant!

Valley Park...what a history....last active in the early 80's I think. Great massive reunion about 10 years ago. Up untill 3yrs ago the track was still there. ALL gone now.....The place was a classic mid western dust bowl...really was like a carnival agenda it had..going. Ask any one who attended there .. race fan crew member or driver..Once you crossed thru that railroad "underpass" tunnel>>>> it truly was a different world. Wallace Schrader and many others cut their teeth at that track.

Rusty was my mom's favorite driver, I wish she was still with us to see this! Thank you for doing this video and thank you Rusty Wallace for taking time to tell your stories!

You guys knocked out of the park again! It’s so cool you are able to get these guys to do this. These stories probably would never be heard without your work. This channel is unbelievably important to documenting NASCAR history. Thanks again!

I really enjoyed how much Rusty enjoyed revisiting this shop. His excitement was palpable. Its always good to see someone happy...... and the $5 thing was great.

I started following nascar in 1992-1993 and really became a Rusty fan. So awesome to see this video!

I honestly think you should take some credit for these former legends, and history makers taking their time to talk on camera. There must be something these people see in you, that makes them want to do it. Rusty seems like a very humble nice person, I always liked his positive energy when he was racing.

Don't feel bad; I remember the late 60's and watching NASCAR on Wide Wirld of Sports! Fun times.

Ya know, this is WHY Rusty Wallace is and will ALWAYS BE a Racing Legend but also an incredible incredible human being when he finds time to share the name of Alan Kulwicki in his own story, keeping Alan's name and memory alive...truly a beautiful moment in this piece, Rusty, God Bless!❤

I got to meet Rusty in the early 80 in Winston-Salem at a meet and greet. The following week he was at a racetrack and we got to talk again. Long story short I came away from this meeting thinking how down to earth and humble Rusty is. What a truly good guy he was,not strutting around thinking what a bother the fans are. I don't think Rusty ever met a stranger,what a good guy.

I think Rusty enjoyed this tour just as much as the rest of us! 👍👍

To think of the talent that came out of that shop, you had the players to build the championship teams you were part of. You guys did a great job on this Vlog. Thanks again!

Rusty being from Missouri, along with Schrader, Mark Martin from Arkansas! I was always pulling for these guys to win. It was when racers had so much personality! Fun times watching them race and beat Dale Sr. sometime! Best of luck to you Rusty and Southern Country Customs!

Man I love rusty Wallace I remember being a kid and he was my favorite driver

How wonderful to see and hear Rusty again.... One of the greatest character/drivers of NASCAR in a Golden Era of its own. What he did on the race track made a lifetime of memories, and I have to Thank You both for doing this wonderful video.

Well you and your pretty wife do a great job on these historic videos. And rusty did a great job explaining thing s for sure. Greg Moore my best friend they have rusty on their fox show every year. This is best rusty wallace video I've see

When Osterlund Racing was there, I worked in a body shop that was in one of the strip buildings. Dale Earnhardt would come to the Osterlund shop. Driving a Chevy pickup with an aluminum camper shell, and wearing a cowboy hat. I didn’t think too much about it, he hadn’t hit the big time yet! Loved to hear the engines on the dyno. I’m thinking this was 1979!

I've been busy, but I finally got to sit down and watch these videos. Awesome to see and hear about things that would never be told if it wasn't for y'all. Thank you.

These guys were the Marvel superheroes of my childhood. We used to go around and visit race shops in the 1980s-90s. These places seemed palacial back then. I’ll have to find some of the pictures I took. It’s awesome of Rusty to show you around. When we would get the chance to meet Rusty, he was always fun to talk to. I’d love to see Junior Johnson’s place in Ronda, with a tour from Darrell or Sterling.

It’s crazy to see a ton of people across KZread that say they have a new found respect for Rusty. Obviously he wore the black hat a lot in his career and the amount of Dale Sr fans is insurmountable. Rusty was one of the BEST drivers period. Besides the #3 car it’s not far fetched to say that the most recognizable car on the track was that #2 car. I believe Dale and Rusty were more alike than any other driver with the mentality and how they carried themselves. I’m from the piedmont and my mom had 2 drivers. Cale and Rusty so I grew up a diehard Rusty fan. It’s nice to see him get all this recognition the past few years. Thank you for doing this series on the wheel man that I grew up loving. And for doing it on the Wallace’s as a whole. They are one of the most prestigious families in racing and in nascar. My ma would have loved to see these.

It still never ceases to amaze me how those shops with all those winners and success were small and rather crude compared to the big mega-shops they have today, yet you get the vibe that they all teamed up and battled their way to the top and had a great time getting there! I think I said this before, but I will say it again. It would be awesome if Dale Jr was able to give you a tour of his car graveyard. I love seeing stuff about that place for some reason.

My mom was a huge Rusty fan, so just to bust her up, we would always talk Rusty down and she would get mad. One of my favorite races that Rusty won was the dog fight battle at Watkin's Glenn when he drove on the grass and kept the lead to win the race. Great video.

I worked at Beasley Cross Chevrolet in Kannapolis, N.C. in parts dept for Zeb Auten. Zeb lived in Harrisburg and knew all the Earnhardt's and many of Nascar fabricators, engine builders in the area. I was just out of high school and delivered GM sheet metal Chevrolet engine blocks, heads to Osterlund Racing in 1979,80 and 81 while Dale was driving for them. I remember seeing Dale and talking to him the week following he broke his collar bone at Pocono Speedway. I think it was in 1981 delivering sheet metal for the Lake Speed #66 team who must have been renting a space on the back side of building. Zeb Auten helped many Nascar teams and fabricators. He sold them parts delivered them for just 10 percent above dealer cost. I spent most Mondays and Tuesdays delivering to race teams during my time working for Zeb at Beasley Cross. @@Stapleton42 This may have been the later part of 81 season. I remember there was several weeks it seemed Lake Speed was involved in wrecks and we took sheet metal to them. If I remember right the car was orange, green and white.....

I went by that shop in 1988, for Rustys fan club function, so I have some interior pic from that day. I also remember the car that got wrecked by Geoff Bodine at Richmond that year was out back in the parking lot, and I got.pic of that too. Long time Rusty fan here, so glad to see him well and excited about the custom motorcycles.

Rusty and Kenny couldn't be more opposite personalities but both very engaging to talk to, and you're doing great asking the right questions. I feel like it's repetitive to say but these history videos are great. This is the NASCAR I grew up on thru the 80's and 90's and it's cool to see this stuff and keep it alive. The MGD Pontiac was such a looker of a car....loved that paint scheme.

Man, these walk around interviews are incredible. My great uncle Bob Hoffman was the lead editor for the Southern Motorsports Journal, so I know some cool backstories.. This is a great way to get the fun parts, the coming up stories, the origins. When circle track racing was in its prime

From Chicago, and my wife and I went to the coke 600, and took the whole week after, and used your videos as a guide to go see all of this stuff ourselves, and for that, I thank you! Waited my whole life (45 years) to see this stuff, and your videos were the perfect tour guide! Saw everything, and more! From osterlund, to stavola, NC racing museum, the race fans ahead sign, etc! Even Rhine let us in and showed us around! Dream come true! Thanks again for the unbelievable content!

Mitchell I just heard Rusty mention driving for Cliff Stewart here in my hometown of High Point NC. You guys need to get up here sometime. We got Cliff Stewart, Bill Davis, and Billy Hagan right here in one spot. A lot of history here. I'm a 59 year old geezer and I love what you guys do! Keep it coming guys 🙂

Did Rusty say who the engines were built by? Harold Elliot? RIP Barry Dodson, Harold Elliot, & Robert Yates. I only ever had one favorite driver, Rusty was the guy that told Alan to get Paul Andrews for his crew chief. 👍

This building is located in Charlotte NC. Exact placement is on hwy 115 north of WT Harris Blvd at the corner of David Cox Rd. This is also the building that Bobbee O's BBQ (it's in the sauce) started. their business.

Judy Tucker was my friend. She walked me through the shop in 88. I miss her. Her husband Sherman was my step-dad for a while.

Rusty got me hooked on NASCAR. I was a big fan when he was in the 2 car. My son and I are still watching and go to races together

Rusty seems so happy, I be came a Rusty fan when a family friend of ours ran a late model that was black and gold 27 just like Rustys during 1988 89 ish. I saw Rusty win in 1993 Inaugural Slick 50 300. keep those racing videos coming.

I love this stuff. You bring it back the Glory Days of NASCAR. Unlike it is now with the stage BS. I just wish they would run a complete race and not have stage points or anything like that anymore. I wish it would go back to the Glory Days of NASCAR and race your way to the win.

You don’t think that if they ran a whole Race Flag to Flag. That it Would not be able to hold the Fans attention? I think they are forced to do other things nowadays. There has to be storylines within the Race itself. I personally hated when someone ran off and killed everyone in a 4 or 500 mile marathon. It’s boring. People nowadays aren’t conditioned for that. That have to remain stimulated or they loose interest. 🤷. It’s hard these days to be a Promoter, Track Owner or Series Director. They have to almost come up with the impossible to satisfy their fans. It’s a VERY HARD thing to do.

@@matthewhicks1725 Yeah, They had to do that because they made every car almost exactly the same and it's considered NASCAR which it's not really NASCAR anymore because "National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing" The key word being "stock car" meaning you can go to a dealership by the car and take it to the track. They should change the name altogether cause they're not even on that method anymore. Everyone loses interest because of the way that they tinker with the body style of the car every year. All the cars are made the same except for the nose cone and the back end of the car. But every single one of them gets the same type of wrap and so on and so forth. At least in the '40s to the late '90s early '00s the cars looked exactly how it was when you were driving them on the street. Now it's all about the same template nothing is actually like the car that you get from the dealership. That is why you have to have stage points and all that stuff because they're driving damn near the same exact car if it was a Chevy to a Ford to a Toyota. I wish Dodge/Chrysler would get back into it. Just like all the other model of cars like Pontiac, Oldsmobile, and Mercury which is no longer in business, Buick GM and so on. It's just not exciting anymore because people that did are no longer watching it because all their favorite racers retired.

I get what your saying. But u can’t stop time and u can’t stop change. Grieving for the 80’s and 90’s just doesn’t accomplish anything. Not Everyone is gone!! I’m still here. Racers’ dont stop Racing just because your favorite guy retired! I guess that’s the difference between a Casual Race Fan and A Pure Racer. Did u know that There are only 3 Drivers in the field now. That were racing when Big E was Alive? Kurt Busch, Kevin Harvick and Martin Truex Jr. . It wont be long and it will be a complete generation change.

@@matthewhicks1725 That's the key word here stock car. Need to change their name then because they ain't stock anymore. It's a Custom piece of shit that ain't worth putting any money into because it cost way too much to get the damn frame from Nascar itself. I'm a true racer because I race lawn mowers and go karts in the lower tiers. I'm 40 and I still love what I do. I'll probably be going into it till I'm 60. I love building the car from the ground up. Besides I'm building a golf cart using a Nissan Datsun engine from a late 1970s forklift... The only thing that was worth anything on that late 1970s forklift was the engine. Going to try golf cart racing when I'm finished with this golf cart. #78 from when Martin Truex Jr raced with furniture row. I know everybody doesn't like the stage points cause Tony Stewart called it out. As he points out a lot of stupid stuff too. Pretty soon they're going to fluctuate and move stuff around hopefully they bring back the old tracks because a lot of the young guys like Chase Elliott want to go back to Rockingham, North Wilkesboro, and so on.

Rusty Wallace was the reason I started watching NASCAR. Man the days watching him drive the Pontiac brings back alot of childhood memories of watching NASCAR. Rusty was my favorite driver. He never won the Daytona 500 but he had a damn good career. 55 wins. NASCAR CHAMP. Plenty of top 5 and top 10 finishes. Rookie of the year. When Rusty retired I quit watching NASCAR that's no lie. Ive tried to watch NASCAR in the last few years but its just not the same without Rusty racing.
