The reason that happened is that in those days, ESPN broadcast in mono. They sent a 2nd channel of audio by satellite from the track to ESPN that was called a clean feed ... everything but the announcers (and them, too, but only when they were on camera). This video likely was uploaded from a tape that was recorded that way, then had its channel 2 audio "stripped" away. Channel 1/race audio left ... Channel 2/silence right. What should have happened was that the mono race audio should have been passed to left and right. Clearly, it wasn't. 😕

I remember as an 11 year old kid crying after this wreck. I thought there was no way Rusty survived. 17 years later looking back on this crash, it was much worse than the Elliot Sadler and Carl Edwards and Tony Stewart crashes. The momentum before roof flaps made the cars tumble much faster. The modern day flips are slower and more of a force disappating roll. This was just brutal. This one, Davy Allison's crash and Geoff Bodine's crash.... good god.

I saw this live on TV, I was 22 and loved motorsports in general, not just one type of racing, had watched racing since I was a baby and attended many. That move Mark made was intense! I remember almost jumping off the chair, that was bold 👍 I wasn't a huge fan of Dale up to this point tho I respected his ability and talent, when I saw the 3 car fly back around when they were interviewing Tony Glover I became a fan. Then Dale's interview afterwards you could see his eyes were wet and he showed he had a heart. He was a good man and helped a lot of people off the track. Did I agree with everything he did driving etc? No, it was a different time. Today most of motorsports sucks, why? It's the personalities of the people in it.

Rustys car was really good that day, he really wanted to get that 4th win in a row, he was out front leading at multiple points in the race. Probably the only time he was ever competitive at Talladega. This wreck and subsequent injuries(broken wrist) cost him the championship that year. It took him 5 or 6 races to crack the top 5 again. In 1994 in that same stretch of races he won 3 of them and finished in the top 5 in all the others (Michigan, Pocono, Sonoma, Dover, Charlotte)

Jimmy Spencer had his best year this season with #12 driving for Bobby Allison. They were way underfunded and much of the year ran with 2 to 3 year old parts and chassis. He was just as good as Rusty and Dale just never had the equipment those two did. It is a shame that team fell apart and never got the sponsorship they needed to continue on. I believe they finished 12th in points that season. Spencer may have been the most underated driver of the 90s.

He came into this race having won 3 in a row. However his wreck was the beginning of the end of his shot at the 93 winston cup. Started a run of horrible luck. The next race at sonoma he finished 38th with transmission failure, then blew a tire and hit the wall to finish 29th in the 600, got wrecked by mark martin while leading at Dover, came home 21st, then blew an engine 4 laps into pocono for 39th. Went from 1st and 86 points ahead of Dale to 5th, and a 298 point deficit in those four races. After that only finished outta the top6 four times the rest of the season. the second Daytona and Dega races where both his primary plate cars had been destroyed in this crash and the daytona 500 crash, lost a cylinder at the glen and had a flat tire at phoenix that caused the sway bar to break. Still came up 80 points short to Big E.

Does anyone else remember they almost red flagged it very close to the end because of rain? We were amongst many of the crowd that left early thinking they were going to call it. Rusty was my favorite driver. #3 was dad's. I laid down in the back of the truck and heard the wreck on the radio 😮. You can CLEARLY see #3 move over two lanes after heakes contact with #2. Exactly! When most people see an accident like this, they are amazed to see the driver walk away. What people don't understand is as the car is flipping it is dissipating energy with every flip. In the Dale Sr. crash, when he hit the wall it was a sudden stop. All the energy in that car went to the driver.
