Rusty Hopper Train Rolling Through Carolina Forest

Ойын-сауық

R. J. Corman GP18 #951 leads 31 rickety old hopper cars across Carolina Forest Boulevard. This was Carolina Southern's last train to Martin Marietta's rock distribution yard in Myrtle Beach. The railroad ceased operations before these hoppers could be moved off the line. Nearly a decade later, R. J. Corman finally pulls these hoppers out of town on a Tuesday afternoon during rush hour on 11/26/2019.

I actually saw 951 when it was still in Carolina Southern paint and I asked one of the guys working on it "you know it'd be nice if y'all left one unit in the railroads original paint scheme as like a kind of Heritage unit" speaking of which how many ex Carolina Southern units were able to be put back into service or at least sold

950 is still in Chadbourn with faded Carolina Southern paint. It is being gutted for parts.

You know of any other units were sold to other railroads and operational condition or where most of the units scrapped on site

2613 and 958 and 943 were scrapped, 951 and 100 (both RJC) are moved to another line. CALA 9163 & 6622 were sold. 9163 is currently up for sale.

Do you know what happened with the old Baltimore & Annapolis #87 switcher? Hopefully it didn't get scrapped. #87 should be at the B&O railroad museum!

@@GlendinningEngineering now that would be nice of the owner to do that, he got it for free thanks to the museum and CSX trading #50 for it. bet it needs a lot of work just for the engine to turn, supposedly it threw a rod thru the block......

Is there any business down there now or just making a pickup? Has RJ Corman picked up any new business? How is the track update going?

They’re only removing the hoppers from that track, some are sold, some are to be scrapped. No business down past Carolina Forest anymore. The latest is Vulcan will be setting up a rock yard near Wild Wing Blvd, and RJC will begin running rock trains down to Conway.

@@GlendinningEngineering That's good to hear. That will probably give them a lot more volume than they have right now. When will they have the track upgrades complete?

Not sure what their timeline is. Ongoing track work along the line for the next couple years I believe.

Yes. Carolina Southern brought these cars into town right before they suddenly shut down operations and the cars were stranded down at the end of the line below the HWY31 overpass until Nov 2019.
