Rustproofing a vehicle after a collision repair or just to extend the life of your investment.
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This step is a chance to improve on the manufacturers' shortfalls or have your build fall into the dreaded rebuilt vehicle stereotype. I'll show you how to apply rust proofing or cavity wax and some of the benefits. I'll also explain the difference between cavity wax and undercoating. You don't have to wait for the vehicle to be in an accident, it can be done right off the dealer lot to prolong the life of your investment.

The depths you go to during your rebuilds really shows your dedication to your craft! I like the special appearance of Mr. Spotty there!
More professional than the "professionals" that's for sure, good job keep it up👍
I shovel sunshine its much easier and I have been driving my Silverado for 19 years and it still looks good, GREAT WORK! its nice to watch someone do quality work...THANKS for giving a shit!!!

Yup,giving a shit shines through on the quality, need more out there like him.
The thing about your rebuild's is that with all the care, quality and attention to detail plus the maintenance you do to each vehicle when you're done rebuilding. Your vehicles are the best bet for anyone needing a quality vehicle.
This is one of the best videos I've seen! Thank you very much for posting this info.
Geat video as always..thanks a ton for continuing to share. Never ever are they boring. At the very least they are informative. But always the humor is timed well. Be safe and have a great weekend.
This was excellent ! I like how you are mixing it up ! I learn something new with every video!
thank you so much. out of all the videos i have watched this is the first one showing this step and once i replace my rockers i have no desire to do again.
Good morning Scott, really great information. Just one more step that makes a rebuilt vehicle better than new if they follow your advice. Thanks for another excellent video, you take care and have a good weekend.
I really appreciate how well you explain the how and why of each step. Thank you.
Helpful video for those of us in the snow & ice states.
Great video as always brother. So glad you put the links in the description.
Even here in the south i couldn't imagne doing a body repair without rust proofing it. It's pretty cool how a few sprays of that wax coats everything. Great job as always!
Getting ready to replace the rockers and cab corners on my 2002 GM 2500 HD. This is really great information. Love your videos.
The first time I saw you do this in your videos I bought the cavity wave and used it on my fleet
Always quality work for you Scott.
That is a very good detail you have been demonstrating. I live in a state in which it snows two inches and the highway department puts on three inches of salt. You couldn’t imagine the cars and trucks that I see rusted out. Some of them are only a few years old. Some times I think that when the people step on their brakes the body is going to slide off.
Great video, case well made, now we know one of the more important questions to the body shop we choose when having a car repaired.
enjoying watching another master perfectionist at work
Aaahhhhhhh I so love boring build Friday’s 🥰 I now know what I need to get for my Subaru restore and all my future restores
Excellent video. I love to rust proof my stuff too. I actually started using the cavity wax because I saw you using it on the mistake truck. I like how it is more permanent then like fluid film or wool wax.
Thanks man for the tutorial on rust proofing! I sure wish I would of done this to my last Jeep Tj. The rockers were toast from Maryland winters.
So much good information and explanation in this video and good camera work showing the process. Thanks.
Rust proofing is important, but keeping a vehicle clean underneath is more important in my opinion. I spend more time cleaning under the hood, inside the fenders, torque boxes, cross members and into the bed sides than I do the outside of my truck. People down south or out west have no idea how good they have it.
Scott, big thumbs up for taking the time to explain and demonstrate your rustproofing procedures. Great explanation on undercoating as well, so many people believe that it is rustproofing when it’s not, great to use to prevent rick chips and to lessen noise somewhat. I bought a 71 Buick Electra in 1980 that had spent 9 years in Michigan, got it cheap because of the rust, 200.00, ran great, floorboards were almost gone, you could reach inside the trunk from the sides where the quarter panels used to be, got great gas mileage because it weighed about 700 pounds less than when it was new. Keep up the great work, love the humor, great work ethic. Dan.
Great video, I'm sure many amateurs and those in a hurry probably skip this step.
I've been thinking about doing this to my truck. Thanks for showing how it sprays inside the frame.
10:30 " So like I said, you want to put a wand on there" lol. Good job and a great video as always.
Nice video, good to know all the steps off rustproving.
Yes that is needed here where they use salt to clear the roads in IL. That salt finds it way into places you wouldn’t think it would get. Great video ✌🏽
Vehcor you are pretty doggone professional to me as far as I can see because you do excellent work on everything that I see you do you get A BIG THUMBS UP & KUDOS from me
Very interesting video topic to cover. I really never gave rust proofing much thought. I always had splash guards and side steps installed on trucks and SUV's to help. I guess I better consider rust proofing as well.
Great video enjoyed watching keep up the great work thanks for sharing
Good information, particularly for people that live up north. I used to live in upstate NY and I've seen cars rot away in just a couple of years, especially back in the 70's.
@lyfandeth

Detroit switched to "zincrometal" and other rust resistant body metal in the late 70's IIRC. And then the Japanese switched to heavier metal, to match, and better rustproofing after some lawsuits mid/early 80's. FWIW.
I'm with you all the way on taking the time to fully rust proof a vehicle it's the only way to finish a job.

Good video.. We bought a Toyota Corolla one time that had had a front fender replaced. They painted the outside but left the inside just the black primer from the factory (it was an aftermarked fender so it was cheap crap). The fender started rusting around the edges and on the back because there was no paint or rust proofing on it.
I'm convinced of cavity wax's benefit. Again , I must say thank you!
Very nice video thank you for sharing your experience and all this very important information 👍
Thank You for keeping it only about cars.
Great work man. So nice to see someone that cares rather then some hack. Now if GM could spend 10 bucks more on a little cavity wax.
Very informative video, thank you!

Your the man! Keep it up bud!!
Thank you for the detail on rustproofing rockers after repairing a dent in rear of my 06 Tahoe I found rust when removed a trim piece cut weld and waxed while at it decided to clean out the front fenders YUK the driver side was full of dirt and leaves
Nice DIY ! I can do it..I will do it ..up north it's a "must".
Excellent DIY tips. I hate salt too except on food. Keep up the great work. Best channel period end of report.
Very interesting an informative video. Hope to see more of your 65 Mustang project soon. Interested to know how you chose VEHCOR for your channel name? VEH icle CO llision R epair?
Here in South-Western part of Norway rust-proofing is needed, or your vehicle will rust out withing 6 years. Mercasol and Fluid film are the only one's that work here. The treatment takes 2-3 days. The places steam wash the entire underside of the vehicle, and then warm air dry the vehicle for at least 18 hours before applying the treatment. All this is due to the extreme moisture and low temperatures combined with salty coastal air. The average moisture level is 88-94% in the 8 winter months, and around 60-70% in the summer period. Need to re-apply Fluid Film every 4 years, Mercasol every 2-3 years. Good to see a proper repair being treated against corrosion the proper way, not just spraying it with "anti-rust primer" and a few quick coats of rattle-can paint. A small bonus of doing a full wax-coat and undercoating is that it reduces the noise level in the vehicle.
Great video!
That blue Chevy looks like a typical Minnesota plow truck. Yes i lived in MN and ND when i was in the Military.
Thank you the great vijeo! 👍
Nice work man
I agree. Thats one easy and relatively fast and inexpensive step anybody can do especially when you live in road salt in the winter like here in Ohio. I am however glad that your cardboard won't rust.
I had used Ford trucks back in the 70's both cabs dropped in the front from rusting out. I fixed one by bolting a 1/2 inch plate angle with brace where cab mount was, not the best way but it worked
I was already going to use cavity wax on my new Silverado.. this just confirms it
I had to put outer rockers on both sides of my 2001 Chevy dually when it only had about 70,000 miles, its parked inside every night, and not driven much in winter. (I'm retired) When I did the job, before I welded the outers on, I cleaned up all the scale that was on the inner portion of the rockers that I didn't replace and coated it good, you could plainly see, GM did no rust proofing in the rockers. after I welded the shells on and painted the rockers I used the same product your using and coated the insides of the rockers, my nearly 20 yr old dually still looks great! I just turned 100,000 miles, every time I take it in for service, the mechanics offer to buy it!!! Thankfully, I live in a small village in corn country ILL. we have a long time Chevy dealer with a showroom big enough for 1 car or 1 truck, but not both at the same time. As many dealers get a bad reputation, this dealer is amazing, truly good work, and honest folks working there.
Nice job I didn’t know undercoating didn’t stop the rust. On my mother in laws drivers sill plate rust started I used the crud thug and cleaned it down to bare metal sprayed it with undercoating and thought job done but it came back. So I didn’t it again and it came back I just thought the crud thug was missing rust. Now I will get black paint then undercoating
the only car company that had such a huge rust out frame problem ..years later...was Toyota....i am a GM guy...and have been since 1970....they have sum issues but overall they are a vehicle u can love and respect!!!
Another great tutorial/video. Keep the good work up. Anyone from corporate America watching his videos, he should be sponsored via tools, equipment and supplies. I am not being asked to write this comment, just following his videos for awhile and think he deserves sponsorship of sorts.

Well, I live in Souther Ca., so this is really dependant on the region that you live in. The South West and Florida aren't as interested. I do agree with you in general, though.
Excellent video :D
I moved to Georgia 12 years ago. I'm moving back to Michigan this Summer. The rest will be somewhat of a culture shock but I'll get used to it again. 😥
Scott that wax job would've been nice for the ACrew. Thumbs up on this vid. I didn't know you can get wax in a spray can with the wand great to know. HOW MANY CAN'S WOULD AN AVERAGE VEHICLE NEED.
unlucky for me I life high up in Northern Europe . Wax and undercoating is a necessity . I hate it but you don't want rust after 3 months
Good info :)
Hi Scott thanks for the tip. You would think the manufacturers should do this for quality control. Have a good weekend.
Another good one Scott! I recently used some Krown rustproof spray under the Escalade. I bought the truck from down south, so it has no rust. Only time will tell if the Krown works, but I had to try something.

Krown works as long as you do it annually or at least every 2 years. I do Krown annually on both my vehicles. I live in Ontario, Canada so salt use, and now brines which stick to the car and can be worse than salt are used all winter long. I have a 2000 Dodge Caravan I've had since 2006. It has been Krowned every year since then. It has the original paint, and is rust free on top and more importantly underneath. It gets messy and dirty working under it, from the oil and dirt that collects, but when every bolt and nut still comes out, I'll deal with the dirt. Rockers, over the rear fenders, the rear hatch and strut towers are all common places these rust. Mine is perfect. Between waxing it twice a year and getting Krown in the fall, I imagine it's one of the best 2000 Caravans in Canada. And I know it's worthless if I sell it, so I'll keep it.
Thanks for the video it came at the perfect time for me as I just purchased a new car and was looking for ways to rust proof it. Wow what timing. Thanks for all the great Info. So you prefer the cavity wax over other types of rust proofing material for newer cars ?
@vehcor The doors are the most important part. I love listening to the doors 🤣😂
In 1966 I had a 1956 Chevy I drove to Bangor, Maine when in service, and the locals there couldn't believe the shape it was in, no rust. Me and my car were from So. West Tn.

Great video like always. 👍👍One question, how do you clean the wands after use?
Within the first minute you answered the question I've been meaning to ask on your rebuild videos. How do you aim the nozzle. 360° spray gets everything and I can see what the brand is. If at some point I'd like to restore an old(ish) car (third gen Camaro), now I know what to use and how to use it!
Have owned a 2000 Silverusto in salty Minnesota since 2007. Rust free when I bought it but now..... Replaced rockers, metal over the box wheel wells, cab corners, brake lines and gas lines. Should of had it rustproofed, thanks Chevrolet. Have a 2000 Es300 and it is not rusty at all. Thanks Lexus.

It's common knowledge or well it should be, that GM did not rustproof well many of their trucks, hence why you really don't see older S-10 Blazers/S-15 Jimmys around anymore especially in salt states.
Nice video, as usual. I'm in Texas so no problem. I've noticed, on my Colorado, that there is a black tar/wax coating on the frame. Is that coating factory or something the dealer applied?🤷♂️
What's the best way to clean out the frame rails on a vehicle, before applying the rust proofing. I have a truck I'm rebuilding and I have a problem with dirt dauber nests inside the frame. I have since covered up the truck with the tarp to prevent future nests but need to get rid of the existing ones. It's a 2000 S10 Xtreme.
The section of frame rail is an excellent display of what happens with the wax. It is a shame the manufacturers don't do this when new. You know most shops don't go this level of protection on their repairs. Sad.
Thanks I've been wondering about that stuff. The card board did it come from a ford cause you know it will still rust just faster now that you tried to protect it. This from a Ford guy LOL
I bought a used 1998 GMC around 2008 - 2010, I don't remember exactly. I've had mechanical work done to it so that is in decent shape, BUT the body of it could pass for a twin of your non rust proofed truck.
I am from Québec and we also use a lot of salt on the roads, in the fall, I get my car sprayed with a similar product every second years even if the car spends the winter months in south West Florida.

@@bondpit8750 No, not Krown, it's an independant repairs shop, but probably the same stuff, it never dries but does not leak and stays sticky. The place I go to removes and resinstalls all the plastic shields under the car to generously spray it. ($120, canadian)

Robert Bisson Sounds about right. The shop I went to offers Krown as a sideline service.
Another pro job. What are your thoughts on the GM truck, wax style coating on the frame-rails and the products you used in this video? Are they compatible.
Wish i had Silverado in a can.......still havent found a salavage new one yet....most of my 02 i have cut away😂. Rockers? We dont need no stinkin rockers. Never tried the 3 m wax. Why i have no idea...tried everything else here in northeast...thanks for vids....miss the train again 😞
Wax proofing is it heat resistant. Because it does get hot and will it melt away. Seeing is believing what temperature it can with stand..thanks
How does the 3M aerosol product compare to gun applied? Does this replace the old 3M Rustfighter 1?, I see that Rustfighter1 has been discontinued. Your work is top notch!
re cleaning wheel wells prior to spraying undercoating: is soap and water sufficient cleaning or should I wipe the area with a solvent product? I will scuff the paint too.
I got fluid film for 95 chevy z/71. Just haven't used it yet.
i am painting my entire frame with rustoleum..it is an 08 tahoe and has surface and sum flake rust on frame....i am ruffing up the frame and coating it with paint...i am gonna wax it too...hopefully it will at least stop the rust from going further....
How does moisture get into the head lights on newer vehicles that you've never replaced a bulb on and never broke the factory seal. I remember in the afternoon shift KIA video you drilled holes to let it drain, but was curious if you knew how to prevent it?
Do you wash out the areas like the rockers and fenders first to try to get the salt out or not bother? Up here we get to mach cold weather so they do not use as much salt, they use to use calcium chloride which is worse than salt but they have stopped using that too. Scott do you do fabrication also or no just rebuild with factory pieces? Just wondering
Professional Rust Proofer.... did you get the doctorate program which includes advanced waxing, other uses of wax, and how to keep people from thinking Brazilian when you mention waxing?
Would you recommend using the cavity wax on boat trailer? Will the wax just wash off when submerged?
Before I watch this video. My #1 is GO TO COLLISION REPAIR FACILITY!!!! Hire a reputable mechanic like I see you are. 👍

Looking at coating the inside if my tundras frame now that I’ve fixed the body up. Eastwood internal frame coating any good? I’ve got light surface rust in there. But not much I can do about it Just going to blow the loose debris out with an air gun
I have an 08 Ram that was in Central Illinois till 2012. I moved to Texas where are there is no salt on the roads. There is not one bit of rust on this truck. Am I safe to assume that probably will not rust if I don't put sealer on it. I have seen similar trucks to mine when I was up there last year and they are rotted out. I hope mine doesn't get that way even though there was only 4 years of driving in the salt belt
6:07 - that face you make when you're holding in a fart in public.
So you can use this on the infamous rust spots on the Chevy for example the cab corners
Do you pull the tail lights to get in between the panels and over the wheel wells?
Great video. now a question...I get my vehicles coated with Fluid Film every year (I'm in New Hampshire) and am wondering if maybe I can skip a year once in a while or do you reapply every year? And I liked Mr. Slim giving you a high-five at the end.
@eager400
4 жыл бұрын
I use fluid film and usually reapply every year. I didn't last year and everything looks good. Just make sure to keep your drain holes on your vehicle clean or they'll trap moister and rust. I usually pressure wash the undercarriage and clean out every drain hole then reapply. Let it sit on a gravel section of my driveway for a day and then I usually don't have to worry about drips.
