Rustoleum Tub and Tile Review. MY MISTAKE

Фильм және анимация

I transformed my 1957 bathroom from PINK to WHITE using the Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile Refinishing Kit. Here is my honest review!
Hello! My name is Jocelyn and my goal is to review affordable home DIY's, making sure to give you my personal honest feedback then YOU can decide if this is right for you!
First up is the Rust-Oleum Tub and Tile that I did in my bathroom. I am by no means affiliated with Rust-Oleum, simply just wanted to update my bathroom without spending an arm or a leg on it. In total, I spent $77 for 3 kits to transform this once pink bathroom!
SOME thoughts and hesitations I had with this product are: Will this be long-term? Will it be obvious that it is painted on? How durable is it? Is it worth it? etc. I answer these questions here!
Comment below if you plan to do this Affordable DIY!

Pro tip: Use isopropyl alcohol at as close to 100% concentrate as you can get to wash your brushes out. Paint thinner will not work, and will, in fact, make a mess. You can then dry and re-use your brush for the second coat. Rollers are probably easier to use once and pitch, but I've had better success doing a sink with a brush. Remove absolutely all caulk, and any contaminants that may be on the surface. Spend a lot of time sanding. When your arm gets tired, keep sanding until it's ready to fall off. Then sand some more. It may not look like you are scratching the surface, but you are on a microscopic level. And it's absolutely imperative to do a thorough job so the paint can adhere to the glazed tile or porcelain sink. Using non-bleach toilet bowl cleaner works great to cleanse and strip any residue. Follow directions on the bottle. Rinse and dry the surface. Use a fan to continue the drying process until you are certain there is no moisture hidden in cracks and crevices. As stated in this and other videos, good prep work is key to good results.

DO NOT use a foam roller to apply!!!! You need to be using a nap roller like the directions state. That’s why you kept having to replace your roller, which would not be the case if you use a nap roller. *Just wanted anyone that watches this video to know that.

Glad I read your review! Very informative. I only have one bathroom, located in the middle of my house so there are NO windows! I also hate painting and have very little patience with it and it's prep. One day I will pay to have that nasty tub replaced with a walk-in shower. LOL

Very helpful video. You had a lot of obstacles to tackle! I just had a shower professionally refinished and the smell is awful in the room. They vented it to the outside and I didn’t smell anything in my house. The room is closed with the fan on right now. I can barely breathe in there. I really wanted to do it myself, but I had so much caulk from the shower doors and I couldn’t remove it all. They removed it all. They chemically etch it and then sand it off. I have some tiles I want to do because I don’t want to hire them again. I’ll have to really think if I want to do it or not. They are peach and awful.

Thanks for your honest review, and for being brave enough to admit to your mistakes. I recently refinished my hall bathroom with this same kit for the second time and posted it on my channel. Preparation is key and I think I did better this time than the first. I know it says to let it cure for three days, but since we have an extra bathroom and still working on that one, it's been curing for three weeks to the day! So what did you end up doing about the mistakes?

  • @cheekydiyhome

    @cheekydiyhome

Hi! Thank you! Yes curing is essential here. As for the mistakes, adding another layer of the kit made no difference. My only other thought would be to add a decorative tile on top to hide and make it look intentional. I choose not to spend the money and begin saving for the big Reno

I did this on a tile kitchen countertop. I really liked the results for a temporary fix. It took 3-4 coats until I was happy. Some things that I would do differently: If the grout is coming out anywhere on the tile before you paint, replace it first! Once you paint, if stuff goes down in those crevices, you can't clean it out without scratching the paint. Two, get a touch-up kit for later. On a countertop close to a sink or any surface that will get lots of use, you will need it. I already scratched up a spot by the sink. It's fine for a temporary fix, but in the future I will be replacing the countertops. And yes, it smells bad, you need to wear a respirator not just a mask. Open every window you can. Oh, and make sure your cat isn't around. My daughter's cat walked through it and not only does she now have white footprints down the hallway, she had to hose down her cat which was lots of fun....

I was re painting a painted tub. It was originally gold, ( former owner) and it had peeled. I dumbly sprayed the peeled spots ( after sanding and cleaning) with a regular spray paint. It made a bubbly, peeling mess. OMG she under rates the smell. My eyes were watering.

Sanding wasn’t too bad! Mask up for your lungs. This has been up almost a year and I can tell you I didn’t wait for it to be dull as can be and it’s held great! (in the areas prior to my big screw up) glad this was helpful!!

I did this project a few days ago. She is NOT exaggerating on the smell. I definitely started to get buzzed even with a mask on and also my eyes were burning through out especially when I had to get close in on the tub part. Take in to account the surface you are painting, my tub and surround are one single piece of fiberglass which seemed to absorb the paint really well. Tile might be a little more difficult. If this gives anyone an idea what it's like, don't think paint as in painting your walls. This to me, this was much more like the process of staining something. The smell and consistency of paint were very close to that. So imagine yourself in a small room with polyurethane fumes. Lastly, I used foam rollers and a good paint brush. This stuff tends to get very stinky as it dries and it will tear chunks out of the roller. I believe it may be better to use the fiber kind of roller instead. I had a drip from my the faucet that I noticed after I started but I was lucky enough to catch it in time. So make sure you have a rag stuff in there and a plastic bag over it. In the end I was pleased with the results but be warned this NOT a fun project, it stinks bad, is messy to work with and takes a lot of prep and of course no showers/baths for at least the 3 days.

@@judymiller5154 Yes. I went to change it out and it pulled up some paint from around the parts where the suction cup was. Once that happened, the paint all around the bottom of the tub started to peel terribly. I ended up peeling off any paint chips that were lifted then primed and repainted. It's holding up so far.

When I saw your end result I thought "wow that's the exact look I want"! I live in a very small condo and I'm sure I'll be getting complaints from the neighbors about the smell. I don't care. I know it has been a while and you may have figured this out already, but around the 9:30 mark where you were talking about the area that didn't adhere, you recommended not to sand because it only made it worse. that is 100% untrue ... by sanding it like that, you removed all of the stuff that was not well adhered to the wall, but wasn't as obvious as the 2 bare spots you previously had. Sanding it took it back to the part where it was "good"

It's not your fault. This stuff is garbage. I've used it on like 5 rental units, it always chips up. I had the same problem as you where the second coat just melts up the first coat. I'm never going to use it again. Testing a different manufacturer next, Homax. Any kind of simple suction mat able to destroy your surface is just garbage. You might as well use latex paint. We'll see how this other stuff goes, but I don't have high hopes.
