I appreciate your concise and comprehensive approach with honest portrayal of what issues DIY epoxy flooring can turn out like. I am particularly glad you showed how to deal with etching when you are in a basement (unlike a garage where you can simply blast it with a garden hose).

Nice results! We coated our garage floor + glossy top coat and it has stayed pristine for 12 yrs. Debating whether to do the top coat for the basement as well.

What are your thoughts on covering a basement floor that may have some dampness that comes up after a hard rain???? Drylok makes a basement floor sealer which is designed to provide a hydrostatic seal and keeps dampness from coming thru.... Their final coverage paint (over the sealer) is just an extreme DRYLOK Paint, again with hydrostatic sealer. I did the epoxy kit on my garage and loved it, but am concerned about doing this on a basement floor due to the dampness. Thoughts? How is your floor dealing with dampness after a hard rain??

The product instructions tell you to do a dampness test before you apply it by taping down a piece of tarp and then looking for moisture. If it can pass that, then it's probably fine. I would would hesitate a bit if you are still getting moisture because it may affect the adhesion. So far I've been fine in that regard, but I get water from the wall not the floor.

If there is paint already on my floor, would i need to strip that paint off first before the etching step?

According to the manufacturer: Poorly Bonded Paint - Remove any loose paint by sanding and scraping. Test the adhesion of the remaining paint on the surface by doing the following. With a single-edged razor blade, cut an X through the coating and down to the concrete. Apply a 4" piece of duct tape over the X and press firmly. Then remove the tape with one quick pull. If more than 25% of the paint comes off, DO NOT coat the floor with EpoxyShield until the old paint is completely removed.

How is this holding up? I’m skeptical because you scraped it off pretty damn easy!!!

So far, so good. I have area rugs over a lot of it, so it really doesn't take much abuse. It does seem like it got a little harder/tougher over time. You'd really have to dig at it pretty hard to get it to scratch. Update: It did come up a little near a floor drain. I'm wondering if there was still moisture in the concrete in that particular area where I put it down.

How did you get the recommended thickness? My coverage was more than the estimated cover by quite a bit using a 1/2" nap roller. Manual states 3mil thickness, but I am not seeing that type of thickness.

Yeah, I found it to be pretty thin. I just did the one coat, but I'm sure you could go over it a couple times.

Do you need clear coat over ?
