Imeet in Russian means to possess but I think it's closest equal in English is to master, since we say "ya imeyu russkiy yazik" "ya vladeyu russkiy yazik", so if you say "ya imeu mashinu" well, you not merely possess it you've mastered it, which you can't really do, not with a poor soulless machine, for mastery you need something within yourself or a slave or serf; which i think is why it sounds so awkward to say ya imeeyu mashinu. even ya vladeyu maschinu is bizarre. whereas u menya yest mashinu = about me, there is a car note: my cases are horrible. but definitely say "u menya yest" Not "ya vladeyu" or "ya imeyu" for whatever reasons its just that way.
