I've had 3 tortoises for about 5 years and they have been perfectly fine. They are all healthy. In the beginning, they acted up by biting each other, but they have warmed up to each other.

We just bought 2 tortoises that were in the pet shop always next to each other.. We really hope they stay friendly. One is Male the other Female so hopefully that makes it easier as I know 2 males are a no no .. Great set up!! I ordered that typical box for $100 off Amazon but it looks like it's too small for both of them.. I'm going to one day soon make one like this one..

Frank Aldama When I was a kid, my dad rescued a "desert tortoise" from possible mistreatment at the hands of my rowdy boy cousins. "Otto" was free to roam our vegetable garden and enjoy munching on his choice of lettuce, spinach, among other things. One day we couldn't find him and, after much looking around, discovered that he liked to burrow and had dug himself a hideout underneath the sidewalk. My sister and I were very fond of him and enjoyed it immensely when he'd eat lettuce from our hands. We gave him to the San Diego Zoo after only about six months because of "Grandpa," the old man next door who kept threatening to make Otto into tortoise soup. When my sister and I couldn't find Otto one afternoon, we snuck into Grandpa's yard and found him in a crate on his back porch!! So, for Otto's own health and safety, we took him to the zoo, where we always looked for him when we visited there. Thought you might enjoy the story.

Wow really love the story about your tortoise! That's awesome! My fascination started when I was 10 years old I am now 26.when I was a boy my mother was a caregiver and would take care of this older women and on the weekends I would go to work with my mom...the old lady was 90 years old and had a desert tortoise named pokey and he told us he had the tortoise sense she was seven and it was given to her boy an older women so there's no telling how old the tortoise was..but anyways every weekend I would feed it and I loved it.and when I was around 19 years old a bird dropped a small greek tortoise from the air in an attempt to crack it's shell...I took care of it and held it's shell then gave it to a pet store.now I have my own tortoise that I've owned for 4 in a half years ;)

Youre table is awesome. I use like a small dish for a food bowl and she kind of struggles to eat out of it what should I use? Also I have like mixed sand soil stuff its getting messy and dirty now should I change it too all of that hay and have a little part of the soil? It seems cleaner and less messy and that way I could use a slate also. You commented on my video could you please help me out :) Also what else do you feed him? :) Cheers

Thanks I put a lot work into my enclosure,as for food bowl I had the same problem when I got my tortoise 5 years ago,pet stores like to sell things you don't need so I recommend you should start feeding your tortoise on a peace of tile or slate,it helps them get to there food easy and helps trim there beak.yea that sand soil mix can be a problem tortoise really like to burrow and hay is easy and less dirty, check out this new video I made maybe it can help with that problem kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4aIq6OOl7vJYrg.html I put my Eco earth coco fiber dirt in a rubber dish so he can dig in.and as for food I have been feeding my tortoise spring mix lettuce it has 2to3 deferent greens it's very healthy and he loves red cabbage, every once In a while I go into the front and back yard and pick him some clovers and dandelions as a treat to mix it up. Please subscribe I upload videos often. Hope the videos and advice helps. ~frank & Bianca

Yea tortoise table is the best for your Hermann. So meany reasons why. Air flow,u can handle the heat better with a tortoise table... I've seen some people use book shelves for a tortoise table just turn the book shelve on it's back and take out the shelves and u got yourself a tortoise table or use a wardrobe...I made mine.it takes a little hard work and dedication but it's all worth it in the end.go to a hardware store or garden store and buy the wood...my tortoise table is 8feet long by 4 feet wide...I dont know how to measure that where you live.but I think it's best to get a table...homemade is the best because you can add what you want...just watch a few videos on how to make them and if money isn't a problem then practice.but most hardware stores will cut your wood for you if you ask so just think about how long and wide you want it.your tortoise can eat pretty much any type if weed and flowers...red and green romain.just google what your tortoise can eat.but fire sure build a tortoise table it's way better then buying one online..because if you build it yourself u can pick your own wood.like I said before :) just find a hardware store in your area and have them cut your wood the size you want it. Just buy wood glue. Look at videos on how to do that.but for sure use hay and just pile dirt in the corners or pile the dirt in a little tub and put a ramp so your tortoise can get to it to burrow...your tortoise should be in around 80 degrees so you don't need to much dirt.

Frank Aldama I'd probably prefer just to buy one though I don;t really have time to make one really unfortunately it'd be easier just to buy one but i cant find the right one. If i get it ill use tim hay and some soil as you said and when you get you're Spring Mix lettuce do you get it in a bag from shops or? Cause I thought they werent allowed watered bagged lettuce or something/

AubreyAnneaBeauty Your tortoise will not become dehydrated they get water mostly from there food and they retain it very well.and to make sure that your tortoise doesn't get dehydrated when removing the water dish just make sure to soak it in water 3 to 4 times a week for 10 minutes each time. I hoped I helped out please feel free to ask any quotations and if you can please subscribe.

It all depends on the tortoise your getting?? If it's a Russian tortoise don't worry to much about the humidity...just every once in a while just poor some water and mix it into the dirt...maybe about once a week.and I stay in SoCal to so I use a 90WT bulb I keep it on for 13 hours a day. You should be fine with a 90wt bulb.

I don't want to be rude, but you have to have a water dish and clean it out wen he goes to the bathroom in there. Just in case he gets thirst. And it's always a good idea to have a cuttle bone so he can regulate his vitamin c.

  • @frankbianca5037

    @frankbianca5037

    8 жыл бұрын

:) your not rude just trying to help and thanks for the tip.but I've had my tortoise for 5 years and I rather not have a water dish in his enclosure because of many reasons first tortoise will drag their dirt substrate into the water pee in it and poop in it at any given time and then they drink from it.that can cause many diseases and give them parasites I can't keep my eye on him all day.one has many things to do.school, work, gym, out of town .etc.so I rather just put my tortoise in a dish of water five times s week for 10 to 13 minutes mid shell.so hes constantly hydrated and I could keep an eye on him.and he also gets hydrated from his freshly washed spring mix.keep in mind these tortoise come from hot dry places they don't usually run into water every single day. they are engineered to store water in their bodies.and about the cuddle bone..I keep my tortoise well feed and healthy with a very good mix of leafs and greens.I've tried the cuddle bone but he will not touch it because he doesn't need it. in the wild tortoises don't have cuttlebones.thanks for the concern I hope I cleared things up.

Hey there pochi sorry for the late reply. So your tortoises tongue is turning white...ok so in my opinion that can mean many things,i just recently a problem similar to that.one thing it can be is a lack of water or clean water make sure to soak your tortoise at least 3 to 4 times a week and also make sure your tortoise is eating daily and staying hydrated that is a very big part if anything that can be the reason for the white tongue is dehydration..also look in the poop if it is a dry nasty cooler then it's dehydration that's another sign.or it can be that she has a parasite, parasites benefit from deriving nutrients from it's host.beside making sure she is eating everyday and staying hydrated make sure when she is roaming around outside if she is outside make sure she stays away from toxic food that can harm her like mushrooms.make sure she doesn't eat anything that has been sprayed with pesticide.one thing that can help is aloe Vera! Feed it to her 3 days in a row with her regular food maybe that will help...aloe has a lot of healing properties. Here's a video I made just a week ago on the tongue kzread.info/dash/bejne/laN7yJOjpcvHibA.html

And about the Pyramiding on your tortoise.... It can be from a lack of uv light aka sun light.they need more then 13 hours a day of light especially a big tortoise like yours...they should be kept outside.

Sorry for the late reply.there can be many reasons why your tortoise isn't active,a few could be because its to cold it its enclosure and depending on the enclosure also how often you feed it or maybe your setup isn't really big idk or i t can be if its sharing its setup with another tortoise that its scared so it doesn't move a lot...maybe its sick?? Check for red flags...that's a bad sign that its not moving thats a red flag, check its poop to see it its runny or if it has different colors around the edges of its shell are deformity of the shelf or glossed over eyes are foaming from the mouth

AubreyAnne'sBeauty if he or she is an adult, soak 2 to 3x a week....always keep a shqllow waterbowl...they drink water several times a day or just like to soak in it with pooping...feed collard greens, turnips, watermelon once a month for hydration...

u can have a water dish if you really want one inside the enclosure but make so to change it every day and always check to see if its dirty..as for me i do not have a water dish in my enclosure only because to me its to risky for my little tortoise to get sick like if he pees or poops inside the water he will drink from it and that can lead to sickness and health problems so instead of leaving a water dish inside i just rinse his food every time a feed him and i feed him aloe and and a little bit of green squash once a week so he can get water that way to.i also get a little water dish and fill it med shell with warm water and i let him soak in it for 10 monutes four times a week. their is over ways od giving your tortoise water rather then just leaving a dish in his enclosure .

+Kathryn Reilly Tortoises have a special way of escaping, if they can see through it they try escaping, the tortoise cant see through wood so they dont try, glass isnt good but they learn about after 6 years, it damages their beak though, and its the only type of cage you can use a heating mat on so put some paper over the part they can see through and they wont try. This is a big problem with bigger ones like Sulcatas because their so strong they can break through chain link fence.

If you have a tub of water in your enclosure your tortoise will pee and poop inside of it and then when he wants to cool off he will go back inside and drink from it with out knowing that it's drinking it's own pee that's in the water.your not being rude.happy I can clear it up.

I'm at work all day I can't monitor his enclosure clean out his dish when he poops and pees in it and then drinks from it so instead of leaving a dish in there I just put them in water daily or every other day for 10 to 15 minutes and I soak his lettuce everyday
