Wouldn’t exactly call it harmony 😅 . Russians also seized and held Califor nia Indians as captive laborers. In 1833, Russian American governor Ferdinand Wrangel visited Fort Ross and reported that for some harvests "they forcibly collect as many Indians as possible, sometimes up to 150 persons, who for 1½ months are occupied without rest in Company field work" Moreover, "The Factory found itself forced to seek them in the tundras, attack by surprise, tie their hands, and drive them to the settlement like cattle to work: such a party of 75 men, wives, and children was brought to the settlement during my presence." The following year, Californias Mexican governor, José Figueroa, visited another Russian ranch and recorded how Russians "were using, for labor... some Indians from the villages whom they brought usually by force." Although Russian colonialists-who formally withdrew from California in 1841-did employ forced labor, it affected too few California Indians to approach the mass death of Spanish and Mexican colonialism in California. Still, it did reinforce the dehumanizing and violent policies toward California Indian people on which others later seem to have built.
