FOR UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX IN U.S., WAR NEWS CASTS PALL ON EASTER......CTV News.......04/23/2022 The rituals leading up to Easter are the same. The solemn Good Friday processions. The Holy Saturday blessings of foods that were avoided during Lent. The liturgies accompanied by processions, bells and chants. But while Easter is the holiest of holy days on the church calendar, marking the day Christians believe Jesus triumphed over death, many members of Ukrainian Orthodox churches across the United States are finding it difficult to summon joy at a time of war. Many are in regular contact with relatives or friends suffering amid the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has laid waste to cities and claimed thousands of civilian lives, according to the Ukrainian government. "This is a very strange Easter for us," said the Rev. Richard Jendras, priest at St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral in Allentown, Pennsylvania. "It should be a joyous holiday, and it's all about new life, and yet here we are being confronted with the harbingers of murder and killing and genocide and death." Many believers "are walking around like zombies," he said. "We are going through the motions of Easter right now because it's what we have to hang on to." Orysia Germak, a member of the Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Volodymyr in New York City, said news from the war summons bad memories: She was born in a camp for displaced persons camp after her mother fled Ukraine post-World War II, she said. "Easter is such a joyous occasion, but this underlines everything," she said. "It's surreal." PARISHES IN MINNEAPOLIS, BUCHA LINKED AS UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH CELEBRATES HOLIEST OF DAYS Alex Poletz came to the U.S. from Ukraine with his family during World War II, fleeing Russian repression that Ukrainians had suffered for decades - including the Holodomor, the catastrophic famine inflicted by Joseph Stalin. Poletz initially lived in Mississippi, but came eventually to Minneapolis, where he raised a family of his own and found a spiritual home at St. Michael’s and St. George’s Ukrainian Orthodox Church. But his faith has another home, as well: in the once-obscure Kyiv suburb of Bucha. “I had been going to Ukraine practically every summer since independence (in 1991),” Poletz said. And in 2000, when his Minnesota parish was marking its 75th anniversary, they asked him to find a “sister church” back in Ukraine. As it happened, a few dozen pensioners had decided to revive the Ukrainian Orthodox and Ukrainian language parish in Bucha - part of Ukraine long overshadowed by the U.S.S.R and the Russian Orthodox church. “They got a priest, and they first had services in a little house,” Poletz said. He said he knew he’d found a match. And after a priest and a lone parishioner came to Minneapolis to visit, the popularity of the Bucha church swelled. “It was such a little church that the priests had to set up speakers in part of the church yard, so that people would come, and they could stand outside and participate,” Poletz remembers. The parish in Minneapolis responded, helping raise money for a new, bigger church to welcome yet more people in Bucha..... Read the rest of this article at MPR News....

PUTIN'S STOOGES: HE MAY NUKE US ALL BUTWE ARE READY TO DIE....Daily Beast....04/27/2022.... Russian President Vladimir Putin ominously warned on Wednesday that if any other country intervenes in Ukraine, Russia will respond with “instruments… nobody else can boast of, and we will use them if we have to.” In recent days, Russian state media has been hyping up the same rhetoric, bombarding audiences with jarring declarations that World War III is imminent. Every major channel is promoting the idea of an inevitable, never-before-seen escalation over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which is being portrayed as a war waged against the Kremlin by the collective West. Patriotic citizens are now being primed for the idea that even the worst outcome is a good thing, because those dying for the motherland will skyrocket to paradise. During Tuesday’s broadcast of 60 Minutes, Vladimir Avatkov of Russia’s Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs delivered an Orwellian perspective of current events. “What is happening right now is not about Ukraine, but about the future world order, which has no room for hegemony and where Russia can’t be isolated.” Host Olga Skabeeva described a summit hosted by the U.S. in Germany that day to discuss upping Ukraine’s defense capabilities as a sign that this is indeed “World War III, no longer just a special operation, with forty countries against us. They declared a war.” Portraying global opponents of Russian aggression as evil incarnate, political scientist Mikhail Markelov claimed: “The representatives of those forty different countries are today’s collective Hitler.” Later the same day, on The Evening With Vladimir Solovyov, host Vladimir Solovyov lamented the West’s refusal to heed the Kremlin’s warnings. “If they decide to support Ukraine-even though [Russia’s Foreign Minister] Sergey Lavrov told them that this could lead to WWIII-nothing will stop them. They’ve decided to play it big... These are the bastards with no morals.” Head of RT Margarita Simonyan added: “Personally, I think that the most realistic way is the way of World War III, based on knowing us and our leader, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, knowing how everything works around here, it’s impossible-there is no chance-that we will give up.” In perhaps the most shocking declaration about a nuclear holocaust delivered on Russian television in recent months, Simonyan concluded that the idea “that everything will end with a nuclear strike, to me, is more probable than the other outcome. This is to my horror, on one hand, but on the other hand, with the understanding that it is what it is.” Solovyov chimed in: “But we will go to heaven, while they will simply croak.” Simonyan comforted the audiences by adding: “We’re all going to die someday.” Once the conversation turned to Western arms deliveries to Ukraine and a series of fires and explosions on Russian territory, Solovyov pondered out loud: “What is preventing us from striking the territory of the United Kingdom, targeting those logistical centers where these arms are being loaded?” Andrey Sidorov, deputy dean of world politics at Moscow State University, retorted that rather than strike the U.K., Russia should target the real mastermind: America. He specified: “If we decide to strike the U.K., we should rather decide to strike the United States... Final decisions are being made not in London, but in Washington. If we want to hit the real center of the West, then we need to strike Washington.” In a bizarre attempt to soften the blow of Russia’s grim predicament, state TV host and media personality Dmitry Kulikov told audiences that war is sometimes “inevitable.” “This is a big war. The West declared it against us. It’s being waged through different methods, never seen before, but there’s never been as many nuclear weapons in the world either,” he said. “That is the only thing that sets this war apart from all others. This is a historical event, something we’re used to. Let’s be worthy of our predecessors, everyone who lived through that. What made us think that our lives should be better than those of our grandparents? Why should we be free of our historical mission?” Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova appeared on the same program and continued with the same hard line. Solovyov asked her: “How far is the West ready to go?” Without hesitation, Zakharova replied: “They’ll go as far as they’re allowed to. If they aren’t stopped, they will go all the way.” Adding his two cents to the nuclear apocalypse sideshow on Wednesday was military expert and retired Colonel Yury Knutov. “I’ve been observing the American approach from its top levels of leadership towards Russia for several years now,” he said on the state TV show 60 Minutes. “For some reason, they believe that Russia can be choked for as long as it takes, until it surrenders, and Russia will never respond or use its nuclear weapons or its nuclear potential... They themselves are creating the situation when there is a threat to the existence of our nation and our military doctrine prescribes that it gives us the right to use nuclear weapons.” Throughout the program, close-up photographs depicting dead Ukrainian servicemen were repeatedly shown on the screen. Knutov praised the production choice. “We see the Ukrainian land flooded by corpses of Ukrainian soldiers and National Guardsmen... our media needs to be showing more of that.”.......

UN SECRETARY-GENERAL: PUTIN MEETING 'VERY USEFUL'....The Hill....04/28/2022 United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres said in a new interview that his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow this week was “very useful” as Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine stretches into its third month. “I think it was a very useful meeting,” Guterres told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “First of all…it was possible to tell President Putin the same things I say in New York or I’ll be able to say here in Kyiv, which means that the Russian invasion is against the charter of the United Nations is a violation of the territorial integrity of Ukraine, and that this war must end as quickly as possible.” Guterres also said that he came away from the meeting with Putin with an agreement “in principle” allowing Ukrainian civilians to evacuate a Mariupol steel plant. “Let’s be clear, President Putin agreed with me in principle that we would have - with the support of the U.N. and the support of the International Committee of the Red Cross - the evacuation of those civilians into the territory controlled by the Ukrainian government,” Guterres told Cooper. Putin warns of ‘lightning fast’ response if any nation intervenes in Ukraine war “We have been working on the details. At the present moment they are being discussed in Moscow between the Ministry of Defense and our people.” Guterres arrived in Kyiv on Thursday to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in his effort to end the ongoing conflict with Russia. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, which began on Feb. 24, has killed thousands on both sides and forced about 5.3 million refugees to flee the country....

@@lakefiftyseven Like you, am also updated to the Ukraine-Russia War. I will not go into details but below are what I observe when I watch news from Western Media, Independent individual journalists and from The Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense: 1. In the UN’s meeting, where Russian Representative’s time to present their side, Representatives from different Nations walked out. They don’t want to listen. 1.a If it’s time to call the representaive from Russia, they don’t use the word “Honorable”. They will just simply say Representative from Russian Federation. 2. Russia has been expressing her security concerns. One of which is no NATO Eastern expansion. Another thing that legitimizes concern for their safety is the discovery of bio-weapon lab near Russian border. 3. Russia has been telling Ukraine, US, UK, EU, UN that there are neo-nazis in Ukrainean Government. 4. Ukraine wanted to be a NATO member which Russia does not like and everyone’s knows it. 5. Minks Agreements were never implemented which I believe sponsored by France and Germany for Donbass’ national self-determination. 6. Killings of Donbass people in Ukraine started since 2014, it’s just known all over the world when Pres. Putin started the “Special Military Operation” (SMO) on February 24, 2022 which you call on your last paragraph Russian invasion. 7. In their SMO, ceasefires were included to give way for humanitarian corridor. People were asked to leave the areas to avoid casualties. Others prefer to stay because they have no where to stay when they leave. Others were forced by UKrainian Armed Forces to stay and used them as human shields. If there were civilians killed, either because of collateral damage or killed intentionally. 8. If they really want to have peace and order, US, UK, EU, UN should not let Ukraine be a member of NATO. Stop sending military weapons, stop sanctions. Look what happened to other countries like Iraq, Libya, Afghanistan so on and so forth, these so called peace lovers were always involved, many people (by the millions) suffered greatly. Due to greed and terrorizing foreign policies. 9. If you are wealthy, you can buy the Government. The banks control the Government. 10. Indeed, many countries around the world have long put up with living with their backs bent, looking up to it sub-serviently. 11. President Putin shows far more intellectual capacity and communication skills than any politicians I can think of.

PARISHES IN MINNEAPOLIS, BUCHA LINKED AS UKRAINIAN ORTHODOX CHURCH CELEBRATES HOLIEST OF DAYS Alex Poletz came to the U.S. from Ukraine with his family during World War II, fleeing Russian repression that Ukrainians had suffered for decades - including the Holodomor, the catastrophic famine inflicted by Joseph Stalin.

RUSSIA SEEKS 'CONTROL' OF SOUTHERN UKRAININE AND PATH TO MOLDOVA, COMMANDER SAYS.....The Washington Post.....04/22/2002 ........................HITLER MARCHES ON......... A Russian military commander said Friday that Moscow aims to seize “full control” over eastern and southern Ukraine, providing a path to the annexed Crimean Peninsula and to a breakaway enclave of Moldova - the most serious such threat issued to that country. It was unclear whether he was describing official policy. Moldova immediately summoned the Russian ambassador in the capital, Chisinau, to express its concerns about forces potentially advancing toward the separatist region of Transnistria. The comments from Rustam Minnekayev, deputy commander of Russia’s Central Military District, came at the end of another grim week in Ukraine - particularly in the eastern Donbas region, where Kremlin forces have re-focused their fire in recent days. The devastated southern port city of Mariupol remained under siege, with Russia vowing to trap remaining Ukrainian forces that have been holed up in a steel plant there....

"It's surreal." Both cathedrals are part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, whose parishes include many people with recent or ancestral ties to the old country.........Go to CTV News for the rest of the story.....

UNITED NATIONS - The UN General Assembly is scheduled to vote on May 10 on a country to replace Russia on the world organization's leading human rights body following its suspension over allegations of horrific rights violations by Russian soldiers in Ukraine. Assembly spokeswoman Paulina Kubiak said Thursday that the Czech Republic was the only candidate for the seat on the 47-member Human Rights Council. Seats on the Geneva-based council are divided among regional groups and a replacement for Russia has to come from an East European country.

"It's surreal." Both cathedrals are part of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the USA, whose parishes include many people with recent or ancestral ties to the old country.........Go to CTV News for the rest of the story.....

@leons be UKRAINE TOPPLES STATUE SYMBOLIZING BOND WITH RUSSIA: 'IT'S NO FREINDSHIP ANYMORE'....HUFFPOST....04/27/2022 A Soviet-era monument celebrating Ukraine’s bond with Russia was destroyed at the command of Kyiv’s mayor on Tuesday. The huge bronze statue was 26 feet tall, and showed a Ukrainian and a Russian worker on a plinth, holding a Soviet order of friendship. It was a symbolic gift from the Soviet Union to commemorate the reunification of Ukraine with Russia, but it had become increasingly controversial over the years as tensions between the countries grew. The monument stood right under the titanium “People’s Friendship Arch,” which is still standing. The rainbow-shaped structure stretches up to 164 feet, and was built in 1982 to honor the 60th anniversary of the Soviet Union. Explaining why he had taken the decision to remove the bronze statue, Kyiv Mayor Vitaly Klitschko said: “We now see what this ‘friendship’ is - destruction of Ukrainian cities... killing tens of thousands of peaceful people. “I am convinced such a monument has an entirely different meaning now.” “This place had a name, the place of friendship between Russia and Ukraine,” he added. “It’s no friendship anymore.” He also pointed out to the BBC that “Russia destroyed the normal lives of millions of Ukrainians and destroyed the peace in Europe” through its two-month unprovoked attack on the neighboring nation. The head of the Russian worker was removed first and fell to the ground to cheers from the crowd. The entire statue was then lifted by a crane and lowered to the ground, as 100 people shouted slogans such as “glory to Ukraine,” according to Reuters news agency. One of the designers of the statue, Serhiy Myrhorodsky, said: “Russia invaded Ukraine... Can we be friends with Russia? What do you think? “This is our worst enemy, that is why the monument to Russian-Ukrainian friendship doesn’t make sense any more.” One member of the public called Diana told Reuters: “We should not have any relations with the nation of aggressors... no friendship, no relations, nothing.” More than 5 million people have fled from Ukraine since Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine in February. The metal arch over the statue was altered in 2014 when Russia annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea. A crack was painted onto it by activists, to symbolise how Russia’s aggression had fractured their relationship. Kyiv has since decided to rename the rainbow-shaped arch and paint it in the colours of the Ukrainian flag. The Kyiv City Council also told a Ukrainian newspaper it was going to change the names of streets linked to Russia and its close ally Belarus. The capital city itself is now widely known as Kyiv, rather than Kiev, because the latter was based on a historical Russian derivation, although Ukraine first implemented this change after it went independent in 1991.....

UKRAINE PHYSICAL DAMAGE AT AROUND $60B, WORLD BANK ESTIMATES.....04/22/2022 World Bank President David Malpass said Thursday that the physical damage to Ukrainian buildings and infrastructure from Russia's invasion has now reached around $60 billion. Malpass told a World Bank conference that the early estimation does not include the growing economic costs of the war. Of course the war is still ongoing, so those costs are rising," he said, according to Reuters. The United Nations (U.N.) human rights chief said In a Friday statement that international humanitarian law appears to have been "tossed aside" in the war. The office said that "Russian armed forces have indiscriminately shelled and bombed populated areas, killing civilians and wrecking hospitals, schools and other civilian infrastructure - actions that may amount to war crimes." While its mission in Ukraine has verified 5,264 civilian casualties so far, including 2,345 deaths, 92.3% of those were recorded in Ukrainian government-controlled territory. U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet noted that "the actual numbers are going to be much higher as the horrors inflicted in these areas of intense fighting such as Mariupol come to light." Satellite images released Thursday showed what appeared to be mass graves near Mariupol, where local officials accused Russia of burying up to 9,000 Ukrainian civilians. The imagery showed long rows of graves stretching away from an existing cemetery in the town of Manhush. Mariupol Mayor Vadym Boychenko accused the Russians of "hiding their military crimes" by taking the bodies of civilians from the city and burying them in Manhush. Russia, which has denied such claims and said images of streets lined with bodies were staged by Ukraine, has continued its offensive, targeting eastern cities and the Donbas region. On Friday, India and Britain called on Russia for an immediate cease-fire. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy - who thanked the U.S. for the new page of $800 million in military aid - said in a virtual address to the World Bank conference that Ukraine needs $7 billion per month to make up for economic losses caused by Russia "And we will need hundreds of billions of dollars to rebuild all this later," he said, adding that countries that have imposed sanctions on Russian assets should use the money to help rebuild Ukraine. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said Ukraine's GDP could decline by 30% to 50%, with direct and indirect losses totaling $560 billion thus far. Over 500,000 Ukrainians Deported to Russian ‘Filtration Camps,’ Zelensky Says .... National Review.....04/21/202 Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said that Russian troops have deported at least 500,000 Ukrainian citizens from Russian-occupied territory in Ukraine to Russia. “This is deportation. This is what the worst totalitarian regimes of the past did,” he said, in an address to Portugal’s parliament today. He told the Portuguese lawmakers to consider that the half-million figure is twice the population of Porto. Zelensky claimed that deported Ukrainians are “deprived of means of communication” and that the Russian authorities seized their identification documents. “They are distributed to the remote regions of Russia. The occupiers set up special filtration camps to distribute people. Some of those who get there are simply killed. Girls are raped,” he added. The Ukrainian authorities have warned, since the earliest days of the invasion, about Russian deportation efforts. Ukrainian military intelligence said in a Facebook post in late March that officers working for Russia’s FSB intelligence agency at that camp separate Ukrainian troops and law-enforcement officers from the rest of the group. Those people are then transported to Rostov and Krasnodar in Russia....Go to "National Review" for the rest of the story....

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.....
