RUSSIA'S INVASION OF PHUKET | Will The Island Ever Be The Same?

Russian's were flocking to Phuket, Thailand for vacation for decades before the war broke out, but now it is on a WHOLE OTHER LEVEL. Tourism from Russia has absolutely boomed on the island since conscription began and many of those visitors arrived on a one way ticket. This new change in demographic has a significant impact on the tourism sector, as well as the general economy for regular Thai Phuket residents. I was absolutely shocked to see just how much the island has changed from the last time I was there in 2021 and how Russian is almost the dominant language that you hear in all the popular tourist neighborhoods. Join me and my Dad on a tour of Kata and Karon area as I share my opinion about what this potentially means for Phuket going forward. Would love to know your thoughts in the comments!

Your dad is so awesome. I'm glad to see him enjoy his life. I live in a city just outside of Toronto and I feel sad seeing all the older gentlemen/ladies just sitting outside their overpriced housing when I go for walks. Sometimes they're just literally dozing off in their front porch so when I see what you're doing for your dad, taking him with you to these travels, really shows your character Alina. God bless you both.

I also live in southern Ontario on Lake Huron and love my home and where I live and sitting out on my porch is a very relaxing afternoon. due to Russian immigrants, prices of even real estate have gone up in Turkey, Greece, all old Soviet republics, Vietnam, Cambodia, Bali and also Thailand. they have made the real estate even more expensive for the locals who are now forced to go to their villages. Russians dont bring in anything, they use their own russian travel agents, stay in russian hotels, eat in russian restaurants, use bitcoin to transfer money and spend money on russian establishments. so the Thai economy earns zero from them, infact loses. let me explain. a home whch costs 100,000 $ will become 150,000 due to high demand. so when they sale the condo unit, they already made a 50% profit on it. guess what, most money will be transferred in black, and so the home is still 100,000 on papers with 50,000$ transferred to their russian accounts. win-win-win. also the entire deal is done by russian real estate agents.

Where there are many Russians, ALL prices are EXPLODING! Real estate, transportation, food...in many places the end of the story is that locals can not afford to stay in there own country, at least in those places. Or you think that the average Thai, Cambodian, Indonesian and more family can afford to pay monthly re ting fees of 700 and more US a month !?

The are 2 or 3 different menus depending upon your nationality, Russian is the most expensive then Australian and American then European . Your find that the English Germans Swedish are thais favourite nationality as they spend the most money Russians are dispised and are ripped off at every opportunity. Australian aren't really that well liked because of their drinking as they can't handle it and do runners from the bars and are generally rude to the staff. You would have thought it would have been the brits but the good thing is, its too far to travel and if they do come they go to pattaya as its like Spain. Lastly the Americans does anyone actually like these people

True, but it was never anything close to like it is now. So many Russians are subletting from Thais, then re-subletting to other Russian's for elevated prices. The locals are getting really upset, because it's driving rental prices up. Locals are also really upset at all the illegal Russian business fronts that have sprung up in competition with their own. Eventually the government will step in and make the Russians leave, but it probably won't be for a while.

Great video!! Interesting conversation on Russians immigrating to Thailand. I did a quick google about Thai real estate, out of curiosity, and found a Thai real estate company stated that in the last year 40% of foreign purchased condos were bought by Russians. Here in Canada there is an Eastern Euopean Cafe in Waterloo, Ontario. They don't advertise and they don't have a sign visible from the street. You mostly hear about it by word of mouth. They have great food and they've been open for 22+ years. They make everything from scratch. Though I tend to order their Perogies I also love their crepes, pelmeni and their solyanka soup which they make with a mix of beef and ham. Their borsch is vegetarian. Safe travels!!

As for your comments about international investment by overseas companies I totally agree. We have the same problem here in Australia, not from Russians but by Chinese. My view is that I do not have a problem about overseas investment but should not detrimental to the local inhabitants but sadly that is not always the case. The wealthy take advantage of the not so wealthy. Iam sure you see the same in your country Canada to some extent Keep up the great work Cheers

Similarly in Pattaya there are many Russians, especially in Prantunak... menu are written in Thai, English, and Russian or Chinese in that order. Happy New Year to you and your Dad. There is, in fact, a civil war, many things are very similar to what happened at the beginning of the 20th century. There are a lot of unresolved issues since the collapse of the USSR. There are also many countries that do not even hesitate to do everything to set fire to Russia's borders. Most of the issues related to this conflict are pure propaganda. About the flight of the Russians, this is an exaggeration. Very few people left the country and those who had no influence on anything, but whose brains were filled with all sorts of nonsense. I am from Crimea and 99% of people here share everything that concerns events, including Tatars. And Phuket has always been a wintering place for Russians. So, those who can afford it, go to warmer climes for the winter.

Hello Alina, Hope this message finds you and Gordy well. The world has become a homogenous place. The ease of travel has made it such. That being said. It's important that we respect the land and the locals who live there and have established roots. Be Sincere and Understanding of the relationship. Alina and Gordy , you are just that. You are legends. I can remember many years ago visiting the Island of Mallorca , Spain . It was a playground for British and German tourists in the summertime. When leaving the country, please leave it the same way you found it. Thank you Alina as always for a wonderful video. You have enlightened us in how we should interact with each other and the people we visit. Sending you much love❤ from Richmond, Va. Harriet, Jim and Yuki P.S. Is it a surprise to you that Russians also like to spend the winter in a warm climate near the sea? And during the covid, many of us missed such wintering and are now making up for lost time))) My brother and his friends flew to Phuket now. My boss sends me from Thailand to work between relaxing on the beaches and visiting restaurants🙈))) He, by the way, has wintered with his family in Thailand every year except 21 (because of the pandemic). And I expect to be there once again in February. And it is not a one-way trip and not at all because of "Putin's war", as you try to present it. Just Russians also love sea, sun, beautiful nature and tasty food 🏝😍

Not "an invasion", a "medium-term vacation". I have never seen the shops green tents, near the club Med fence in Kata beach along the small beach road....a sign for thai small business recovery ;-) for the info : the businesses were cleared out from the sand maybe ten years ago. I don't like food selling near a beach for cleaniness reason. Your dad is right : Karon waters are most dangerous (currents) than Kata (still avoid the rocks).

In January one Indian had over stayed his visa for a number of years. Not only that, he started a restaurant business there too. I do not have time for such people. He was deported back to India.
