The British people voted to leave the EU several years ago as they wished to end that relationship. We now have a conflict on the far side of Europe in which the British Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary are rubbing shoulders with the French - falling over themselves to pick a fight with the Russians. This is seriously dangerous as the Russians are not fooling around. In view of the EU departure, Britain should be taking a back seat in NATO. The UK cannot match the Russians militarily, it cannot afford 'any' war and these actions recklessly places the lives of millions of UK citizens at serious risk. The UK needs a general election now, to elect by popular vote - a Prime Minister and party that puts the interests and security of the UK first - not the calamity we have at present!

It took 6 months for the Americans to build up a force in Saudi Arabia before they went into Iraq. That was without any fear of Air attacks or missile attacks on the force. What do they think will happen when a strong well disciplined Military like Russia will do when they see these build ups? They aren't playing with some small under developed country. Russia is a juggernaut. The supply lines alone and maintenance on all their high tech equipment wouldn't be able to support a real war. America hasn't fought a foe of any significance since WW2 and still they had their asses handed to them in Vietnam,Syria and most recently Afghanistan.

Er!! It was always a puzzle why, with all the military equipment Saddam Hussein in Iraq purchased specifically from the UK suddenly did not exist when the US and UK invaded!! Then one recalls the role of John Major the then of the UK who was given the task of destroying the Iraqi air force under a " no fly zone" imposed by the US after the end of " desert storm"!! The UK each evening on the BBC would put out a report of the " sorties" carried out by the RAF against the Iraqi air force whilst on the ground, simply revving up the aircraft engines to get rid of sand clogging up the engines of the aircraft!! When the US and UK were assured that no air force existed in Iraq then they decided to attack, telling us poor dupes in the UK about " shock and awe" to be rained on Iraq!! The narrative was about the danger of the Iraqi regime, and not the duplicity of the NATO " regime"!!

And, adding to all of this, there was a protest in Poland (though it was hard to say how large, but not insignificant) against involving Poland into war in Ukraine "It's not our war". First explicit one as far as I've seen. Seems that at least some Poles don't want to die for Ukraine.

Knowing Putin, I highly doubt that a Storm Shadow strike against the internationally recognized territory of Russia will be answered by a strike outside of Ukraine, or on the island for that matter. First of all, they don’t have enough missiles, nor do the missiles have enough range to cause any damage serious enough to adversely impact the Russian war effort and/or economy, in the grand scale of things. Second of all, a strike on Russia, where in the aftermath, the investigative committee unearths missile components which have “made in the UK” printed on them, will further galvanize the Russian population. This in turn will give the Russian government the political capital they need to “turn up the heat” on Ukraine. Increase military production. Further mobilization. More missile and drone strikes, etc. Third of all, support from the Global South is key to Russia. One of the reasons they went in soft and didn’t pull a Gaza, was in fear of alienating the global south. After such an incident, the Chinese, Indians, Brazilians, etc. will look at it and understand why the Russians are turning up the temperature. Fourth of all, it is common knowledge that the populations of western countries, while not Russophilic, are not too hot about engaging in a hot war with Russia. In fact, they stopped caring about Ukraine a while ago. To them, the dump they took in the morning before going to their jobs where they are underpaid, is more important than Ukraine. Russia wants to keep it that way. Because if they strike back at the west proper, the population won’t care why. They will just care about the fact that they are under attack.

I like Io think that I am a typical American. Retired teacher. Supports Medicare for All including dental coverage, infrastructure upgrades, cleaning up our drinking water and so on. The Ukraine war never had any benefit for ordinary Americans. Our elites seem more obsessed over the Russian border than our own border security. They certainly love Israel which is engaged in mass murder with our tax dollars. They also seem OK with putting us that much closer to a nuclear war with Russia which is terrifying. Just finished Annie Jacobsen’s new book, Nuclear War: A Scenario. As a 68 year old I feel fortunate to have survived the first Cold War. Not sure about this one.

The group most opposed would be 18 to 30 yr olds (already demonstrating against Gaza atrocities). This group voted for Obama 2 to 1, and is a key part of the Democrat base vote. Polls are already showing Trump is ahead with this group (RFK Jr and Jill Stein are also more appealing to them than Biden). The loss of support of this group during the Vietnam War forced Johnson out of the presidential race in 1968, and ultimately destroyed Humphrey's campaign.
