A lot of places in the US incorporate native american names/words, including states, which is why you get some really weird stuff that you wouldn't normally see in English. Mississipi is a perfect example of this. Plus you also have some French and Spanish places thrown in with the English and voila! The names are a fustercluck of who knows how many cultures

Kansas and Arkansas were both named for Native American tribes. The westerner's pronunciation of Kansas was off but it stuck. Same with Arkansas, except they used the French pronunciation.

As a Russian, I thought the stress was odd. On the other hand, Arkansas was pronounced too properly (even if incorrectly). The usual Russian pronunciation would be ar kahn zAhss.
