Technically he's not. It appears he has never been an Australian citizen because of Government laws. Our accents are very similar. Aussies claim a lot of famous New Zealanders.

Just typical American .I saw another ,about LA Confidential in which all the interviewer wanted was for Russell to say he was good friends with all the other cast and lusted after the leading lady . He was very dignified ,kept bringing it back to professionals just doing their job . But I can see why he doesn`t like doing interviews ,answering the same questions all the time .

When he said it was an invasion, some people found it ridicilous. They asked people what they think about his comments on a tv show and most of the answers were like " Turks were helping the enemy, they are allies with germany so it was necessary.. " At the time Ottoman Empire was in a decline for the past 100 years almost. They lost in the Balkans, they lost against Russians in the Caucasus, they lost in north africa and it was still going on and the country was shrinking at an incredible rate. British, French, Italian, German.. all were actively supporting rebels and tearing Ottoman apart just to occupy those lands as their colonies. After every lost war Turks were more and more in debt against these nations. They started controlling most of the institutions in Ottoman Empire. It was like when your company goes down but you are so much in debt that government trustee starts managing your country to save it so they can get what you owe to them. Ottoman has lost so much, it was a battered, tired, exhausted country. Since all these foreign nations were all over the place and controling everything, they were also fighting with eachother, spys were everywhere. British, German and others were in a power struggle over Ottoman long before the war even started. Meanwhile in such desperate situation, Turks gathered everything they have, women gave up their wedding rings and their savings for their kid's future.. you name it. With that money they ordered i believe 2 warships from UK. It was an effort to get some ships to defend what is left out of a giant empire. War started, Turks didn't want any part of it but as i wrote above they didn't have much say about what was going on. The allies took over most of the Ottoman land before the war but they still had eyes on oil rich middle east so either Ottoman went into war or not they wanted those lands and were going to take it anyway. It was just a matter of creating a reason to attack. Turks still didn't want to go into war and remained neutral. Then Brits didn't send the ships which were paid for and also rejected returning the money back. Turks lost everything and were going to lose even more. Germans were trying hard to get Turks to fight on their side and this betrayal from British gave them the opportunity. 2 German warships escaped to dardanels fleeing from allies, they made it to Istanbul. Germans offered those ships to Turks as a compensation of their lost case with Brits. Those ships left the straights with German flags but later on switched to Turkish ones and bombarded Crimea.. Which brought Ottoman Empire into the war either it liked it wanted it or not. Brits didn't want Ottoman as ally coz you don't invade your allies and Brits wanted today's Iraq, Syria, Lebanon..etc so they were probably even happy that Ottoman ended up getting pulled into the war by Germans so the game was on. They started lying to Anzacs about the whole situation, people volunteered to go defend British from some bastards who were German allies. They came to invade Ottomans and the whole story in Crow's movie happened at Gallipoli. Turks call it the war of Canakkale because that is the name of the City and the straights.. Gallipoli is called Gelibolu which is the name of the peninsula at the European side of the straight and that is where the invasion forces were landed. It was 100x more insane than any movie can show you and both sides lost around 250.000 lives each. Shortly after Germans accepted defeat and Ottoman didn't even get involved in the big war except trying to defend itself or its lost lands.. but since Germany was defeated, Ottoman was at the loser side of the nagotiations and allies just invaded the last remaning motherland of Turks, the Anatolia. Greek landed on the west coast, italians took over south, French south east and today's Syria, Armenians were given the entire east Anatolia....etc the list goes on. They were picking women as they like and raping them in front of their husbands.. They were killing people as they like if anyone was to disobey or resist their authority in any way. All those lives lost at Gallipoli didn't matter, they came and took over with no resistence left to defend Anatolia. The Sultan agreed to any terms put in front of him. Turks were finished completely. It was an invasion plan from the get go, it was an invasion progress during the world war and it was a complete invasion after the war and no matter how much Turks love and respect Anzacs as brothers, it was still an invasion they took part in. There was one commander at Gallipoli.. One of the greatest minds of his generation and one of the greatest leaders in the history of men. A man who said, "You the mothers who sent their sons from far away countries wipe away your tears. Your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." for those Anzacs at Gallipoli. That same guy somehow believed that his people still have a chance, or maybe he just thought it is better to go down fighting than just watching what was going on. He started organizing his people for one last march, made himself and everyone around him believe that they were going to kick these invadors out of their land and that he did. His name was Mustafa Kemal and he is the founder of modern Turkey. I hope that one day your nation will show actual interest in teaching-learning about your first war as a nation and not just focus on the battle itself but how everyone got there and what it actually was for instead of still repeating BULLSHIT like defending British or Ottoman helping Germans.. Ottoman couldn't even help itself and was betrayed by British, pushed to German's lap by British and then targeted by British and its allies with colonial interests. Not much long after, we all saw the same nations going for WW2, again fighting for colonies, resources around the world without giving a flying F about those who actually live on those lands. Turks stayed out of it. Mustafa Kemal warned his nation and the world about Adolf Hitler and died just before WW2 started. He said "Peace at home, peace in the world." and left. Thank you Russel Crow for your honesty, interest, sensitivity on the subject.
