For those who don't know this song was inspired by the Toronto Airport VOR identifier which is KYYZ...Toronto Airport. Rush always flew through there as it was their home. The rhythm in the beginning of the song is morse code for YYZ. When pilots tune their NAV radio to a VOR navigation beacon, they hear the morse code for that particular site. Alex Lifeson was working on his pilot's license at the time and they heard it when they were flying. Neil and Geddy started working with that rhythm and this magical song was born. As a pilot and a Rush fan...this is amazingly cool. Now you understand the video too.🙂

Can you believe that YYZ was nominated for best rock instrumental for the 1982 Grammys, but lost out to Behind My Camel by The Police? If you ever want proof of how marginalised Rush was by the ‘establishment’ in the music industry, that’s gotta be it right there.

I did not know that. I always viewed 'Behind My Camel' as album filler on that record. I would not skip over it because it fit in with the rest of the songs but I did not necessarily enjoy it either. YYZ is one of those songs that gets you pumped as soon as you hear the triangle start.

Alex really is in a class of one. When I took up guitar more seriously about a dozen years ago, it gave me a whole new ear into what Alex was doing in the music I'd already been listening to for 30 years. Now I've come to really appreciate, for instance, the mini-symphony that is the solo in "Between The Wheels;" who else could have possibly come up with that??

I’ve never seen anything like it, and I’ve seen just about all the guitarists people rave about, from Howe, Morse, Petrucci, Page to Vai to the gent from Animals as Leaders. Lifeson stood alone to be sure. The only guitar player who has blown me away more is a little known player named Brad Barr, who played in a trio called The Slip with his brother (Andrew) and a bass player who just blew my mind and I believe also used Taurus pedals. They were like the Rush of indie rock. (And just as overlooked in comparison to other indie acts as Rush was to other classic rock acts)

I bought this album just minutes after my brother's girlfriend put it on the shelves at peaches records and tapes in Lynnwood Washington. When I took it home and listened to it, at the time, I wasn't really impressed with songs like Tom Sawyer, limelight, and YYZ. I was impressed with the song "camera eye". I loved RUSH because of Alex Lifeson's guitar work. I was into RUSH's long instrumental pieces. 2112, Xanadu, Bytor and the snowdog, Hemispheres, and Natural Science. All these years later... I am still a HUGE FAN of the period of ridiculous robes. 2112 to Permanent waves. Moving pictures was the end of that period. I saw RUSH on the moving pictures tour. Great show. Where I sat in the Seattle center Coliseum, Was right behind the soundboard 6 rows up. Alex's guitar drowned out Geddy and Neil. Loved it. During the first few songs, someone had passed a joint onto our our row, and we all took a drag. I was higher than I had ever been in my whole life. It made this concert into a religious experience for me. Still love YYZ. I love RUSH... since 1978. Thank you Neil, Geddy, and Alex, for giving us all that. I love you guys!

Whilst I know the actual reason for the name of the song being the IATA code for an airport in Toronto, I always had another read on the title "YYZ". Being American born, but growing up in England, Z was one of those letters everyone insisted I pronounced wrong. "Zed" here, instead of Zee. Then I learned of a third, "Izzard" a more archaic form of the letter. In more recent years, my head bridged the gap between this third form, and "YYZ" during a discussion of whether "Zed" or "Zee" was intended. Thus, "Why-Why-izzard" or perhaps "Wizzard" (thanks Terry Pratchett) got stuck as an unofficial and personal third name for the song in my head
