Great reaction y’all! Neil actually used to play with matched grip until right before this album Test for Echo! He decided in the mid 90’s, he wasn’t feeling loose enough. So after 20 yrs of being one of the best drummers in the world, he thought he could do better and started studying with the jazz drummer Freddie Gruber! After about a year he totally reinvented his style and played traditional from then on! RESPECT!! Be well and God bless… from Texas!!

Ged, always, "loaded himself up." He needed to in the near future (from the time that this album was recorded). He wasn't playing keyboards NEARLY as much, here, so he didn't use the bass pedals often [He doesn't on "Natural Science"!] ...but throughout the '80s & '90s, he played Taurus bass pedals while he was playing keyboard, with his hands AND (of course!) singing. Rush were a band who, unlike MANY others: THOUGHT about HOW they would play things, live, while they were conceiving them & recording them, in the studio,. Obviously, they could layer, double, etc., while recording ...BUT; when you bring that to a live audience??? How are you going to make it sound "the same" (or, at least "acceptably similar?"!). RUSH always thought about that and wrote and arranged their parts so that: they COULD do that; AS a trio!; WITHOUT additional instrumentalists (which, as you know, was and is a common thing, for bands who have multiple, layered parts or sounds, etc.!) added/needed. This is another reason that they were so lauded (sometimes: OVERmuch!!) and respected by their fans: they didn't "cheat" anyone. They gave you more than you were expecting and never brought attention to it. It wasn't like: "-Yo! ...Check-out what I'm doing here!!!!" No. It was: "Does this sound right, to you? Good. -....Moving forward. .... ...let's dig this together, peeps... You vibin' with me??... All right!...." ---Of course, "Natural Science" was, more of, the "fans who want 'Hemispheres, II' will want this" track song ...while they [the band] were, already, breaking into an area they had no, real, brook with, earlier: radio friendly material. -Which started, definitely, with THIS album and with: "The Spirit Of Radio" ! --expanding VOLUMINOUSLY, with the follow-up: Moving Pictures and "Limelight" and "Tom Sawyer" ...and, then the SIGNALS album, on the back of that ("Subdivisions", "New World Man" ...maybe: "The Analog Kid" - etc.!).

What an awesome treat for my Friday afternoon! Great reaction guys. This brings back memories, amazing, but hazy ones - there was numerous 'clouds' around us that night! I was at this very show in Toronto, in fact, this was my first Rush show!! (and not to be the last) I distinctly remember when this song was played - talk about blown away! Indeed, the sound these 3 make (with no backing tracks, extra touring musicians, etc.) - everything you hear is played LIVE! Multitasking at it's absolute finest - and insanely tight. The transitions, doesn't matter what song, is seamless & spot on. This same concert was the first time they played 2112 in entirety - to end the first half of the show (there was no opener, it was 3 hours of Rush!) - atmosphere was perfect. Hot summer night, breeze off Lake Ontario, sweet smells in the air, and 3 hometown boys rocking our socks off! This was a special night! Cheers.

Neil, only, started using trad. grip (and, really: "split-grip" or "mixed-grip" -I forget what it's called, most commonly🤷-apologies-), sometimes; later in his career. He began to study jazz in the early '90s for the first time and "learned to swing" (which, yes: he NEVER did in the '70s or '80s!). It didn't really suit his style! ...BUT it gave him a new perspective on playing and approach! ...so, yes: he would alternate ...and I don't know what specific periods he preferred or employed "mixed-grip" (or whatever you call that🤷🤷: one underhand, one overhand). [I am not that devoted a "Neil-head" that I know, "to the day,"🙄🤦 what he was doing or thinking (and there, definitely, ARE guys like that out there!!)]. ...but it was not something (as you, yourself, noticed-and mentioned) that he did for a long period of his career. It was a later development.

They wouldn't like those tracks, IMO. It's a little too dark. Those are not good first listen tracks. It takes a few listens to get it.

@@georgetaxi8179 🤔 Agree! 😏 I'm going for Neil Peart Drum solo live in Frankfurt. Think they'll love that!

@@georgetaxi8179 If you never have a first listen then you never have a listen. It would be a shame to bypass two of their early classics. No darker than 2112.

You will never convince me otherwise. Rush is and will always be the greatest band ever. 3 dudes to create such music! Just this song alone is proof of that. Sorry all other bands, you must compete for second place.
