With the advent of You Tube, everyone has brought the world into their homes, as far as seeing how other Bass players play, and where you are in the pecking order, in my home town I was a big fish in a little pond, but out here where the waters are deeper, I’m just a minnow...I played this song 30 years ago, and had to take each lick off of an LP, one vinyl line after another, lifting the stylus then putting it back on a record, physically, and here you play it effortlessly...it took me hours... great job, love the transcription to follow along, I didn’t realize the main lick was in 7/4...and how many tempo changes, great job...and thank you!

Cool story, thanks for sharing. Luckily for me the bass track for this song is on KZread so I was able to transcribe it note for note. Once transcribed, guitar pro allows me to practice at slower speeds to really lock it in. Even with these advantages, it still took me about 40 hours to make this video. Also, keep in mind, you are seeing my best take and it can't be overstated how much better I sound with rush in the background.

I'm not as far along in my travels but I understand what your getting at. I started playing guitar and drums at 11, never got far but I'm still learning at 30! I can't read notes to save my life so my buddy taught me how to play Sabbath tunes day listening to the CD and playing bit by bit. We really got going when we discovered the dvd player could play CDs and had a repeat. In 6th grade I got a Guitar World subscription and the tabs and the players riff articles were first on my list, I'd read the tab and listen to the CD then give it hell! To this day I listen to the song, read the tab and start working on it. Dudes on KZread help when I get stumped but the cd its self always seems to be my go to.

Great tone man. One-time guitarist here, setting off to pick up the bass - that finger dexterity is not what it once was after years and years in construction. I think this is gonna be my first Rush tune. I really appreciate the post - especially the tab, although watching your left hand is the best cheat there is. The only decision I would make differently is form the notes more intentionally by giving them ending points. I hear a lot of bassists letting the notes ring. Like all of their notes. It ends up making the preformance sound muddy (to my ear). Especially a guy like Geddy, if he's letting a note ring, it's very intentional for a very specific feeling - like in the solo of this song. Otherwise the dude is super succinct, staccato even, precise - like a chemist.

Nice job. Man do I wish I had KZread 30 years ago when my band decided to play this song. I had to learn this on bass by listening to the record over and over, bit by bit. I got it eventually, but you nailed it!

Good luck. I wouldn't call this a starter song but it definitely more approachable than other rush songs. If you can sing and play this at the same time, you are truly talented. Have fun.
Thank you so much for posting this. It is really helping me nail this song down. Awesome job!
Simultaneous guitar and bass solo! Sweet!
The alternate 7/8 and 3/4 tempos make this music impossible to understand. Only way to play this is to memorize the whole song. Very tricky if you are not a rush fan.

Excellent my friend! Rock on@
Great tone man.
Amazing

I noticed when they play it live, he waits until the bass run finishes and then comes in late with the singing. Must have recorded in a way that was harder to do playing and singing together.
Nice demonstration, man!!! Thx for sharing! Would mind if tell me what type of effect did you use? I also have a MM SR and your sound is amazing!
I was trying to watch the tab and dude's fret hand at the same time, thinking the whole video he was playing different notes. Dude has a 5 string and I'm about damned blind 😁 still an awesome vid!
Geddy once stated that he is cursing himself every time when he is at Home and practicing the New Song
Thanks for this. I’m running into probs with the rythm when the verse first starts. I have the notes but not how it fits in. Its hard to hear in the music unless you have it isolated.
Im so glad to be at the level where I can say, "Yeah, that's reasonable" and get through it with minimal struggles
Hello, I just wanted to point out that at least in the 129th you didn't play all 8ths, but a long e. That's the only inconsistency I have noticed when trying to learn from your video. And I must add your videos are BRILLIANT for learning new songs. Much love and thank you a ton, keep it up!

Lyrics: Living on a lighted stage Approaches the unreal For those who think and feel In touch with some reality beyond the gilded cage Cast in this unlikely role Ill-equipped to act With insufficient tact One must put up barriers to keep oneself intact Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme Living in a fisheye lens Caught in the camera eye I have no heart to lie I can't pretend a stranger is a long-awaited friend All the world's indeed a stage We are merely players Performers and portrayers Each another's audience outside the gilded cage Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme Living in the limelight, the universal dream For those who wish to seem Those who wish to be, must put aside the alienation Get on with the fascination The real relation, the underlying theme The real relation The underlying theme

This is great, but can't help but notice the transcription has the final 4/4 of the stanza wrong, as Geddy et al come in on the "and" of 4 not the downbeat of the 7/4 riff. Very minor nitpick but that's an important variation.

Hi. I have a small group of kids I am teaching basic music to in my small town. Ive been trying to transcribe audio to tab and I've tried a few so called free programs so far but they didn't pan out. Can you recommend a good software for this or do you transcribe yourself? Thanks
Do you have the tab for Distant Early Earning?
Generally awesome, but the second note in the 143'd measure is wrong. Should be D# instead of F#---at least if you're trying to replicate the studio track. I must have played this 20 times (along with the studio track), always wondering why that note sounded off. Found a tab which said D# instead. D# sounds exactly right.

It's pretty low. I followed the recommendation on the music Man website. www.music-man.com/faq
This is a great TAB, and I'm really grateful. But I think measure 143 - the first F# (4th fret on the D) should be a D# (6th fret on the A). I'm willing to accept I'm wrong, but the first F#...I'm just not hearing it.

I'm quitting bass right now....wow

The dang time signatureing is so dang confusing lol
So this cover is actually wrong on the verse. There a video of geddy doing pre show exercises and he’s plucks 2 strings at once for those single notes.
@BassistBreakdown
4 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I used the bass track on KZread to transcribe this. I do not recall hearing 2 strings at once for any part. I certainly could have missed it. It is also possible that the bass only track on KZread isn't actually from the recording. Finally, perhaps Geddy played it differently during the warmup then he did on the record.

Holy shit it's been a year since I first saw this and I'm still trying to learn how to sing and play this one. It's much harder in the chorus than the rest cause the singing doesn't exactly follow the bassline like the rest of the song. give me way more to manage cause I've got two different rhythms to keep track of.
