It's fun to focus on Alex in this song because he's all over the place with his guitar! That background of Geddy singing "rising falling at force ten"... in the arena, they had speakers set up on the opposite side of the arena so that the vocal would circle around 360 degrees.

This is their best recorded version of Force Ten imo. Better, thicker sound with the Jazz Bass and the overall production just sounds better than the thin sound on HYF. It just sounds more rocking here.

Hold Your Fire is one of Rush's best albums as far as I'm concerned & really epitomises their massive 80's synth sound. I love it. It's just that phase of music from Signals, 1982, right through to Roll The Bones in 1991 that really set them apart from everyone else. I started to move away from Rush a little from Counterparts onwards, only finding the rocket sauce again with Clockwork Angels, which is an absolute masterpiece.

Yes, I agree. One of the better songs off Hold your Fire and I find that when they do these songs live they seem to add to them which makes them more enjoyable.

Fun fact: Neil Peart’s drum solo featured the drumming from “Scars”, off of… Presto! So all albums covered 😎

With you on this one J., but Force Ten comes to life in this concert...the bass tone and placement are nice (even the chordal parts... %^) The guitar has that crazy sustain...think Adam from Tool might have heard some of this? The sound elements in the production overall are amazing. Neil is just right....some productions have overdriven drums. Alright, react to Bangkok...he never reacts to Bangkok.... ;)

Hold Your Fire is definitely one of my favorite Rush albums. My first exposure I think was Subdivisions (from Signals) on MTV. Hold Your Fire was also the tour I saw them in first. They never have done much from Presto, but I think they usually did The Pass, just to slow things down and get the entire audience bowling, I mean bawling lol. Would love to see Geddy in those bowling shoes and his floor length white Kimono style gown.

With the R40 Tour they skipped HYF. So there is that. Personally, me, and my friends were hoping they would play. Time stand still. It would have seemed fitting for the tour.

A memorable tour. Saw 3 shows (Chicago, Milwaukee, and Toronto). Got a pair of used sticks in Chicago. I always enjoyed hearing that jackhammer effect. Cool reaction. I wish Geddy played his Wal instead. Thx for sharing this.

Not a fan of post-Windows Rush, but this song sounds good live. Most of their music got watered down after the mid-80s, but hell, any band with 10 awesome albums under their belts is Hall of Fame.

My favorite off HYF (though Mission is close)...HYF is probably Rush's weakest record (at least bottom two or three) but I think Tai Shan really drags it down more in people's minds than maybe it should.

the twee love letter to China song is ridiculous. Neil has a few lyrical efforts that leave me going "wtf", not many, but a few. Like I understand that having some appreciation for ancient China is a thing one could do, but post Mao, being the guy who wrote Anthem and The Trees, he should have known better (and I could point this kind of thing out about a few tunes on every subsequent album).

They really didn't play much of anything off Presto other than Presto and The Pass after like 1994. They didn't play anything off it on the R40 tour (no HYF or Power Windows either) because they played a bunch of that era on the Clockwork Angels Tour (First 9 songs were from Moving Pictures/Signals-Presto/Roll The Bones depending on the night). The 80s stuff can sound dated and a little corny, but in a live setting they hit you right in the face. Just wait until you get to the Clockwork Angels Tour stuff.

It’s a good song. Not among their best but I enjoy it once in a while. FYI - they played Force Ten on the following tours: 1987, 1990, 1991, 1994, 1996, 2004 then 2012. So obviously they like it. I could have done with it a little less. They played it on every tour for a decade straight. Too much.

I love it so much! I think my favorite song from hold your fire is Mission Tai Shan is also gorgeous. My least favorite part of their catalog was always the 2112 era, but at some point, I absolutely converted, and now I love all the versions of Rush. What’s your favorite era? I think for a lot of people it’s their debut album up through Moving Pictures.
