Rural China‘s unique LANTERN FESTIVAL in Putien, Fujian | EP11, S2

Rural China is a lot of fun! Expecially in Putien, where they have the longest celebration during the New Year. In Putien, every place, even the small villages, have its unique way of celebrating Chinese New Year. I had a surprise today for bumping into the friendly locals and celebrate together with them....
0:00 Intro
1:55 Jindun Village, Putien
5:09 Putien Temple
8:00 Roaming around the village
9:37 Arrival of the deity
12:41 Xianyou, Putien

I am totally blown away! People are still continue the traditional celebration started hundreds of years ago. Again, it is the human spirit, people get together to fight the invaders, no planning, everyone just do their part. People are so friendly offering food for strangers...Thanks for bringing to us these traditions. Hope they will continue.

I'm Chinese Malaysian and my grandfather was from Hainan Island but Putien was also my ancestors' village before the end of Southern Song dynasty, which was about 700 to 800 years ago! My surname is Long 龙 and I had read the history of the Long Clan whereby they had migrated to Hainan Island as soldiers during almost the end of Southern Song dynasty. I also read before that even these days during Ching Ming, some Long Clan members will travel to Putien to pay respect to their ancestors.

While I lived in China, I was able to see a similar tradition to the bench lanterns in a village in the township of 缙云 in 浙江丽水. It's a little different though, and I think even more fun! The village's dragon was about 140 meters long (they said it can get to be over 200!) and had a huge head and tail made from paper. The men assemble in the village square, and play a game where the head of the dragon must be caught by the tail. It's very chaotic, and took so long the men had to take a couple smoke breaks. After the head is caught, the dragon sets off for the temple, and then parades through the village while people shoot off fireworks. However, the tail is always trying to pull the head backwards, so sometimes the dragon will pass by your house and be pulled back multiple times! Each time you shoot fireworks off again. To top it all off, there's performances in the village hall and a night market in the square where everyone's made goodies and are selling them to their neighbors. That was one of my favorite memories of China, and perhaps my life. It made me understand so much more about Chinese culture and why the countryside is so important for retaining tradition. So thankful to my student that invited me that year.

My mum fondly recalled her Henghua (Putianese) neighbours when she was young. A lot of them returned to China after 1965. I am surpised there are no tyres or bicycles incorporated in the parade! Just joking. (Henghua people were well known in Malaya for their profession as trishaw pullers. Later the Chinese Kapitans banned trishaw due to its inhumane nature and they shifted to bicycle, wheel and automotive industry).

Actually most of the Henghua people in SE Asia in the motor trade went out from Jiangdou which is nearer Fuqing. Most were descended from Wang Yanqing who founded the village during the Ming dynasty. He was originally from Nan'an but for some reason, the people of Jiangdou spoke Henghua dialect from Putien.

@@Zerpentsa6598 Interesting. Back then during the change from tang to song, putian region was a part of quanzhou proper. I believe the synthesis of putien language is the layer of old quanzhou on top of fuzhou. Taken, during that time a lot of changes happened. Also need to consider the great evacuation where people might not necessarily return to their original coastal lands. People do also talk about the difference between hokchew and hokchia.

You meant, of course, rickshaws, or jinrickisha, which were 2 wheeled cabs pulled by a man. These were not banned, and were seen in places like Penang until the early 1950s. The early rickshaw pullers were Fuzhou migrants who spoke Hockchia and Hockchiu dialects, as well as Henghua migrants. As relatively late comers, they were forced into this niche labour market. The Henghua, led by Ong Ban Koh and Ong Ban Bee later went into bicycle repairs and motor trade. One of my uncles was a rickshaw puller who later went on to found a prosperous company in the Rochor area of Singapore. One of his fares was an English man who started to kick his back shouting as he did, "Faster, faster...". Such was the treatment meted out by the British to the Chinese. Trishaws, as you know have 3 wheels, and are still used mainly for the tourist trade, again, in places like Penang. Also, I think it's an over simplification to assert that Henghua or Xinghua dialect is a hybrid formed from other Min Nan dialects. There are Henghua people who trace it to migrants from northern China during the Three Kingdom period.

@@Zerpentsa6598 I believe it was banned in north Sumatra in early 1900s by the Tjong brothers. Yeah I meant rickshaws. Sorry. However to claim ancestry hailing from three kingdoms era…. Actually regions like Putian was non existent until early Tang, as well as Minnan regions unless you meant they were from Fuzhou proper. The earlier settlement close to Putian started around 60 years earlier than Quanzhou in around 300 AD. You can read more in paper titled Chinese Colonization of Fukien by Hans Bielenstein. The language substrate was also shared by minnan language. Similar to Quanzhou the early migration started from the north around the coast instead of latter from the west through the mountain rivers. However these people were mostly farmers and peasants. To claim ancestry from the three kingdoms is not impossible but a big claim as family names were adopted, taken and borrowed very often throughout times, eg a Lee and a Tan of one village would probably would be more related than another Lee in a village 50km away. A lot of Chinese like to claim their ancestry far back but a lot of these regions were not fully sinicised until Tang dynasty. I would take the ‘three kingdoms’ lineage with high skepticism. If fuzhounese, it would be slightly more plausible. A lot of them were just the zhonghua nationalist movement from early 1900s where every second person try to claim lineage from the ‘great han’. As per mentioned, pre minnan substrate would likely be there, but pre minnan subtrate would probably be present in quanzhou minnan too. A lot of diaspora to Guangdong came through Fuzhou and Putien, hence it is easier to observe the evolution of Puxian tongue, taken that influence comes here and there from various times and places. However we do overestimate our predecessors’ literacy and their ability to accurately record lineage throughout centuries. It took one massacre and two generations in Indonesia for more than half of their Chinese to abandon their lineage and Chinese identity. Same like Peranakans claiming Zheng He origin, most are myths and make believe and the few who really do have it could not be bothered to claim it as most would have fully assimilated to Malay culture.

People were just so focused recording the iron fireworks than just simply enjoying the spectacle itself! Love your videos, absolutely unique!

I think the best part is they are treating her like one of theirs instead of as tourists. That's an experience you cannot get as non-Chinese people..
