Running two Amps with one Pedalboard - including Effects Loop

Музыка

Today I want to show you a simple trick to use your precious pedalboard with two amplifiers without the need to replug the cables. With this solution, switching between the amps works with a push of a button.
One important thing: This easily works with amps that provide a serial effects loop. With a parallel effects loop, you will have to dial in a setting where the complete signal is routed through the loop.
You can find the products I show in this video here:

Very clever. The effects loop send breaks the signal when you switch between amps. Effectively you are sending you signal to the amp but you can't hear it because it never returns to the amp.

A wiring diagram would be awesome. it's a little hard to follow without seeing where you were pluging in on the amp side.

Or you could put a stereo pedal after the distortion to split the signal and use stereo effects in and out of the two effects loops.

Cool video, many thanks for sharing. I bought the Palmer Tino to switch my amps, but I did not consider the fx loops to split modulation pedals. I wonder if I can do the contrary you did, I mean that the main signal will be managed by the Palmer Tino, and for the fx loops, I’d like to try with 2 double jacks: one to connect to the output of the last modulation pedal to both SEND fx loops, and one more double cable to connnect both RETURNS to the first modulation pedal. Do you guys think it could work??

I have a Morley ABC Switcher pedal and have a question. How do I send output of my pedalboard that is connected to input of my amp to the pedal? Sorry to ask a dumb question but the inputs only allow one cable from each amp. I want to send pedalboard-> amp-> Morley switch pedal input A and then on amp 2 send output of pedalboard 2-> amp2 -> morley pedal input 2.

Hi! Did you notice some signal or frequency loss in this setup? I wanna try to send a couple of pedals (strymon flint and a way huge delay pedal) in both fx loop of a Carvin club master combo and a Marshall jcm 2000 head. I didnt really understand about serial or parallel fx loops in amplifiers..It can work in both cases? If this works as I hope, you let me save a lot of money!! Thanks for this video🙏

Hi - great video, really useful. I wondered if there were any issues with losing guitar signal strength with the y-splitter cable? If so, is the answer to use a mono AB for the front of the amp instead of the y?

Hi @Tim Goody. I never had any issues with the Y cable. I used it to avoid an extra step on the pedalboard. I guess you could test the setup for signal loss with an ABY switch.

Thank you for the video. I do have a question. In case a multi effect guitar processor has only 1 output which means I can't use 2 Amps if the Amps doesnt have an fxs loop (4 cable method). So can I get a "Y cable" to use that on my guitar Multi effect processor and its going to be connected from it to a (loop station) or whatever device that has R & L and thats going to split the signal to stereo, is that correct? Example: I will have the input from the multieffect unit sent to a loop station R & L (input) and have the amps coming out from the loopstation as stereo out R & L.

Hi there, for the tuner and drive pedals, I just use a Y-cable after the last effect in front of the amps. Since the switcher cuts off any signal in the effects loop of the amp that is not in use, those are muted as well. I also didn´t have ground loop issues with this setup.

I would be careful with that. Not sure what cabinet you have but I would recommend that you stay away from that unless you have a 4x12 cab and the left and right speakers are wired completely independent from the each other. Anything short of that I would just use two cabinets.

Danked sir! One question: I assume you connected two ''combo amps'' in this exemple? So you connected the two amps to your pedalboard and also chained the fx loops with your method. Very very nice. Now, if you only want to use ONE cabinet? Same goal here: pedalboard going in front and in fx loops of boths amps but with only one cabinet. (Probably needs one more XY pedal to switch amp1 and amp2 into a single cabinet?) Thanks a lot! Very instructive, I have been searching for this! peace

Hi. If your amps have a pot where you can adjust the amount of effect in the signal, these are parallel effects loop. If not, it is most likely serial. With a parallel effects loop, you can try to adjust the effects level all the way up. This should cut the dry signal and make the loop more or less serial. But some amps still route some amount of dry signal even if the effects level is all the way up. Guess you will have to try without effects plugged in. If the amp is silent when having effects on full, it should work with this method.

That would be much more difficult and more expensive. Especially if you want the loop effects routed to both amps at the same time. I looked for those switchers and couldn´t find one. Closest thing would be the Ampete 222, but with that, you can only route the effects to one of the two active amps (wet/dry).

Hey dude kool vid...you were touching on some points where I’ve hit a brick wall In my own chain. I was hoping you could lend a hand. I’m trying to use my mooer ge300 multi fx amp modeller (going out of the XLR outs using 2x frfr powered speakers as cabs) and a katana artist in a two amp blend using and ABY to split both. The powered speakers sit either side of the katana... so 3 speakers are in play. This part is easy enough everything is split through the ABY... great I have two essentially .... But when I stomp an Fx on the ge300 it only comes out of the powered speakers. And like wise if I stomp an fx in from the katana using the GAFC it only plays through the waza speaker on the katana. How can I sync the fx of both units without phase issues ... but it is paramount that the modelling from the ge300 does not colour the artists dialled in preset and vice versa. I mainly want the katana to be a dry rig... I want the all the modulation delay and reverbs to come from ge300. But when I stomp the distortion and wah of the ge300 I want it to play out all 3 speakers. Like wise for the katana if I stomp in a distortion from the GAFC I want to hear it out all 3 speakers. Is this possible? Cheers.
