Running to a stand still. A Ballymun photo essay by Bob Dixon Photography

Running to a standstill
A documentary of Ballymun
"I see seven towers but I only see one way out" are lyrics from a famous U2 song entitled Running to a standstill which tells the story of a couple strung out on heroin and trying to function in their day to day life. Such is the reputation depicted and is well recognised as the lifestyle of those who inhabit the Ballymun towers.
In this photo documentary, I strive to show that there is much more to these infamous towers than drug problems and deviant behaviour.
The community within this tower is actually very close, encapsulating families of all generations who carry out their routine daily lives in the same fashion as any other individual living in an apartment complex. Their lifestyles are not governed or dominated by the bricks and mortar that surround them or indeed others perception of their social status.
Ruth and her daughter Louise very kindly allowed me into their flat to document the place that they call 'home'.
