I am with you 100% ! I have had people tell me that I'm crazy or soft for worrying about off grid AC. I view the whole set up, starting with the camper as a tool to get outdoors more, travel, and go anywhere... the ability to sleep comfortably at night in the south doesn't seem like a luxury to me, it's money well spent!

Great information. I have been waiting to pull the trigger on a Solar Generator system and have been tweaking my trailer in the interim. I am still using the lead acid battery but when it dies I am not going back to lead acid. I have a monitor to see what my load and usage is, but I see in your video that just plugging in the AC directly is more efficient. I enjoy all your videos and have been using my Free Solo OG and taking in all your learning experiences to heart. I can't thank you enough for sharing your experiences. Haha... it adds up fast, but I like to think I saved money by getting such a cheap camper...

The old manual 400w Frigidaire 5000 btu window AC, a 3.8 kwh capacity 12v 300 ah LiFeP04 battery, 60 amp MPPT charge controller, and a 2000w pure sine wave inverter, and about 1000 watts of various solar panels is what I use for power outages plus 11 solar power stations I got great discounts on for my freezer, dorm fridge, WIFI, lights, etc. I use a watt meter to get a rough estimate of power usage. I also have a cheap backup gas generator. I declared war on power outages after my location got slammed by two hurricanes in 2020, Laura & Delta, and as soon as I got my stimulus checks in October I began getting what I need. I live in a 30ft 5th wheel, low fixed income, and no car because I can`t afford to even use one or even drive one on my medications, so I had to invest in my future safety. I live very far from stores in the woods.

@@DIYOutdoorLife You saw the 100 watt CIGS I had on top of my 12 SK in NC. I have their 40 Amp MPPT controller as well and it seems to always be getting some charge, until it is totally dark outside. I'm hoping to future proof it a bit due to very slow solar degradation life span versus other panels. Being fairly immune from the elements like hail was also a consideration, as my teardrop is parked in a storage lot when not in use. The 200 Amp Renogy AGM is always in the FLOAT mode when I start out. I noticed the were having some flash sales on their web site.

Very "Cool" set up. Glad to see the technology has come this far!

Great advise!!! I recently got a Ecoflow Wave 2. I plan to power it with a 1.2Kwh solar generator I built that now has an external 2.3kwh add on external battery....Great setup!!! I may get the Ecoflow 2 Max and expansion batter in the future to be able to go DC-DC off grid with A/C...

I love the wave 2, I hope you caught my video on my review. The wave2 accomplishes the same cooling for a lot less power, the only downside is the extra time to set it up properly and keep it out of the rain

Thats alot of battery power! I kicked around this idea for along time but decided our Texas summers are just too hot to only use the AC at night. For me, a small inverter generator was the best option to save space, weight and $$$.

Awesome video for solar nerds like myself, enjoyed the video. I carried the generator with the intent to charge the power station for use at night in case of no solar. The downside was the weight and space for the generator but it was a good working option.

I bought the Genmax inverter generator to top off my station. It runs on gas or propane I run mine on propane since that’s what I carry in my rig I won’t carry gasoline. Works really well for me. BTW I do have an A/C for good sleep. Thanks for your video good info 😊

Nice set up. We have been luck so far with cool nights and not having the need for ac at night.... i know that wont last forever though!

Absolutely love all your videos. Your style delivery and the amount of information you provide is incredible. So I have a question regarding my small camper if using a sufficiently sized portable power station that doesn’t have the 30 amp camper plug-in. As you know they make the little 15 amp Adapters for plugging into the traditional 15 amp outlets - which I use regularly when here at the house. So can I use that same approach with the camper when boondocking and plugin to that 15 amp plug power cable adapter into the power station??? Thanks for you reply!

So many ways to go about doing this. What I love here is having your data that 2kWh = 6-8 hours for a 5000 BTU AC, that's the key takeaway for me as it's a metric to build around. I like the idea of a DC air conditioner like the Wave2 - rather than buying a couple expansion batteries. But of course the expansion batteries give you more kWh for anything/anywhere not just a/c. EF's new smart generator though...pair that with a 400w solar panel and you could probably get by just fine with only a 1kWh PPS and the Wave2 battery. All that said, I slept fine at the NC boil with no air conditioning. Door windows open with roof fan exhausting gives such a great cross-breeze. (also means I don't have to worry about slinging ac condensate between my walls without Sam's fix :D)

LG 5000 BTU 400watts AC ($149 from HD is the coolest ) with the little red Honda 1,000 watts works perfect all day all nite 24/365 49DB super silent no need all the expensive crap ...the best friend of a solar system is the Generator...PS one of the Ecoflow that I own fail within 2 mo good luck in returning and having repaired or replaced

That is a great system, it's hard to beat a good Honda. I do have trouble leaving them running at night, especially if you're expecting bad weather. Bummer on your experience w EF, so far this community has had excellent customer service and returns . Yours had issues in two months and they didn't return it, no questions??

@@DIYOutdoorLife they ask if I updated the software? 48 hrs later they need it a video with the problem..and then another customer service ask for the serial number...4 day they said call back later another customer SVC what is your serial number? Like 5 different customers SVC ..like a week going by ...and then they agree to repair the unit ..send it to repair 1 week...and then 3 days to repair and another week to get back...more than 2 to 3 weeks...do not buy from eBay...!

Adding a soft start to the ac compressor will save you more power.

For these smaller window AC units, it doesn't quite work the same as the large overhead AC's. Although theres a couple devices that help with inrush current (use a smaller inverter), I haven't actually seen any of that reduce the amount of watt hours used. Any suggestions?

Have you looked into using mini splits for heating and cooling the trailer? And using it off grid?

Yes, they are incredible. Unfortunately, there isn't anything remotely practical for a set up like this. I made a video on my wave 2, its a portable heat pump that gets amazing numbers, set up in tough tho.

I have been looking at 12v air conditioning units. So far I have only found roof top models for a semi trailer rig sleeper. Good but would like a side mount unit for side wall installation. Did you at the 12v AC units available? Thanks for posting and sharing your success.

I have been using one of the original ecoflow deltas, just plugging it in without doing anything for efficiency I get 2 hours air conditioning on my bushwacker. I have found just cooling down the camper even for just a half hour makes a huge difference and usually the night temperatures are ok with the vent fan. Recently I found the breaker that shuts off the converter and I am curious how much that will help.

That's right, I think your unit has about 1000wh. After the first couple hours, it starts to cycle on and off more since the camper is cool, the numbers get better the longer it runs. Like you said, just being able to take the edge off to fall asleep is key!

Hey Brian, Love your videos! I watched the 2 year old ones where you really liked the Goal Zero 1500X. In this vid, you talk about the eco flow. So are you more of a fan of that now or do you still like the goal zero? I have a new camper that came with a 200 w solar panel & 2 unspectacular AGM batteries. Problem is, it has a new fangled all electric fridge that drains the batteries every night. I think the 1500x could be a good solution, but I was wondering if you like the eco flow better now. I like them both. There's also a newer Goal zero model that is really nice as well. It comes down to preference. The goalzero 1500 X's expansion system isn't as nice as EcoFlow or the new Goal zero. It also charges much slower. Although it can be expanded, it uses an older technology that is not as nice as the newer stuff. If you could imagine wanting to expand in the future, I would either get the Goal zero pro models or an eco flow system. amzn.to/4bq4kRm if you are happy with the 1500 wh, the yeti x is still an excellent power station.

Nice presentation. I have an off grid radio station (ham) and would love to run one of those AC units. Is there a link with the install.. I like the idea of it not hanging out. ... and data as to what it takes would be nice. I have 400Wts and expanding 400 ah to more capacity. thanks

Hello Brian thanks again for another awesome video, a while back I sent you a message asking if a Honda 2200 gas generator would be good for the AC unit on the Bushwacker, but I’ve found out in California we cannot get a 2200 here anymore I’m trying to keep the weight down with the Honda gas 2000 work? I know you can get the Honda 3300 but that’s a bigger heavier unit and it would go in my tongue box which creates more tongue weight and is big and bulky in comparison, thanks again I appreciate all your videos I think you’re brilliant especially with electronics!!!!!!!!!👍👍👍 The main reason I want gas generator is because it’s simple easy to use and the AC literally cools down in about five minutes and mainly use it for my dog after a very long hike in the heat.

Thank you for the encouragement to add a delta 2 max expansion battery to my van solar system to run my wave 2 air-cond / heat pump. My bluetti ac200max runs everything else. Also carry a Honda 2200 generator in case of inadequate solar charging. Anxious to see if the heat pump feature on the wave 2 is adequate tor Fall camping in New England. Do you use your wave 2 for heat?

Will the Wave 2 heat pump pull heat out of an 32°F outdoor temperature? Curious to know as some heat pumps are designed to be effective at lower temperatures. I see no documentation on the heat pump/ambient outdoor temp ratio for the Wave 2.

I’ve been looking at a dual generator that runs off gas and propane. I do a lot of cooking over an open fire pit so I don’t use propane very much. I also plan on getting a propane hot water heater for and outdoor shower on my tag xl.

That 1500X has 1500 WH, the Ecoflow has 2000 WH... the GC 1500 X will run 2/3 as long. Usually that equates to a short night, although sometimes I've got a full night out of it. I still love my yetiX, it's still the best option for running the camper as a whole. The EF Delta 2 max does not have the high amp DC output required. Although I haven't been able to afford it yet, Ecoflo makes a Delta Pro that has the same feature as the Goal Zero.

I have started research on the EcoFlow and there is good pricing right now on them. You mentioned using the Goal Zero because of the Anderson connector but the EcoFlow doesn’t have that connection. I’m looking at using my power station to basically tie into the on board mounted NOCO charger which will charge my AGM and use my camper that way. I will charge the power station during the day and then once back at camp just tie in the power station and leave it hooked to the trickle charger all night while I use lights and the fan through the night. I will probably add a space in the tongue box for my power station to sit so it’s protected. Does this sound productive or is there something that I am missing? Thanks.

The EcoFlow Delta pro and Ultra, do have the high output DC Anderson, although most do not. The main advantage, is directly powering the camper off of the DC output. Although setting it up to run into your NOCO is very convenient and works, it is very very inefficient. You may only end up 25% as effective as running direct DC. This may not matter because if it gets the job done, it doesn't matter. Doing some experiments is the best way to go, keep me in the loop, I'm happy to share my notes.

I have an OUPES 1200w power station that has the brick for charging from a wall outlet. Is it okay to plug that in to a generator to charge it? Also, I've noticed the brick gets really hot. The OUPES came with a 12v charger to charge in the truck, would it be okay to plug that into the generator if that option is available? I'm thinking for those cloudy days when solar isn't enough to charge it up.

You want to make sure that the generator has a pure sine wave output. It should be clearly listed on the device and in the owners manual. Modified or square generators can make the bricks very hot, but they can get hot with normal use as well. Fine to use a car charger, it's just very slow.

@@MassSquad that unit is awesome, it was one of the ones I was thinking about. It does, however, draw a lot more wattage than the 5000 BTU unit I'm demonstrating. In all, it's more efficient because it does more cooling, but in this situation, it doesn't help you. If you had a bigger camper, and were replacing a rooftop unit, this is 100% the way to go.

@@dogishappy0 I actually edited that whole section out of this video, to avoid people going to sleep. LoL The wave 2 is the preferred method, but you can't gloss over the set up, it is a pain. On some trips, it's easier to do this set up than it is to bring the wave 2. The big problem is my teardrop has one door, making the wave 2 hook up trickier and more time consuming. I have a solution to this that you will see coming up on the channel.

@@DIYOutdoorLife It does look awkward. I haven't seen anyone try to run the rear intake hose to the inside of the cabin before. I'm curious what you have come up with and how it will affect the efficiency!

@@dogishappy0 definitely supply AND return for best efficiency, note worth difference. Run both of the fronts in w unit outside or reverse if the unit is inside.

Brian have you considered a 12v air conditioner?

@DIYOutdoorLife I would like to remove my window ac and install a window there and get one. I watched your wave 2 video and was impressed.

I am worried about battery/power station being kept in 140 degree heat in a closed vehicle sitting in the sun. Can those power stations handle that type of heat? There is no shade at the beach

This is an excellent point. Lifepo4 batteries, like these, have an excellent safety record and heat threshold but heat is always your enemy. Generally speaking, it's rare to be battling rain and high heat at the same time. This allows you to get them out of a confined space or even put a fan on them if needed. I use reflect tech or a windshield visor if I'm in a direct sun situation. If it's hot like that, make sure to do some shading. Remember, I emphasize using the air conditioner at night. Since you're not outputting high watts during the day, you are 100% fine. You mentioned a very important point, always be good to the power station and not to overwork it in high heat or direct sun.

Please, forgive me, if I'm abusing my noob card, but after solar panels and this setup, is that everything needed to run a smaller window ac, or is a controller and stuff, still required? I don't blame you if you don't want to answer that? 😅

Never worry about the noob card, were all in this together. When we show the portable power stations, that is a battery, charge controller and more all built together. In other words, the ecoflow delta 2 max includes that charge controller built in.

Hi Brian! As usual, I am going to be the contrarian Donnie Downer here, and point out that the upfront cost of the three Ecoflow units you demonstrate is $4250 using all available discounts. That equates to $141.66 per night of use if used for 30 days in the summer. The cost drops over time, but even after 150 days of use (5 years @ 30 days/year), your cost is $28.33/night, or about the cost of an electric site at most state/national parks. I really don't know how anyone justifies that cost, even if your economic privilege allows it. Philosophically I'm opposed to using AC while camping, so I don't camp in those conditions. As the saying goes, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.

Lol… I love your comments and look forward to them! A lot of times, it's a breath of fresh air. I will note that you also trashed the system that runs on DC and uses 1/3 the energy. The argument I made there, was how expensive it is to run a window air conditioner on battery instead. The wave 2 accomplishes is the same goal for a lot less money, you just have to deal with the set up. Like I said in the video, running a generator or doing without air conditioning has to be evaluated. I have to capitulate to being a baby when it comes to sleeping in hot weather, Lucía (family from Guatemala) has no sympathy for me and would completely agree with you. The only way a system like this makes sense economically, is if you look at the numbers over the course of the 10 year life expectancy of the power station and utilize the PPS for more than this sole purpose. I bought a $9300 camper. When I add up all of the gizmos and gadgets that I use, I've spent a fraction of what most RV owners have and get a lot of joy from it... I wonder how long I'll be able to use that excuse. Thanks as always for intelligent commentary!

@@DIYOutdoorLife Haha yes I did trash the Wave2, but at $1600 the Wave2 now looks like a bargain compared to this!! 😅You do lose 1000BTUs with the Wave2, however. FWIW, like Sam I'd endorse the gas generator/PPS combo. About $500 gets the gas generator. Charge the PPS for a couple of hours in the afternoon, and you're good to go for one night. I believe we spent $23K 8 years ago for our used Class C, and we get the best creature comfort of all - a bathroom! 💩

Not many things in life are justifiable on a pure economic basis. Sleep is one of the most important aspects of our health and for many people a cool sleeping environment is essential. When you are out on the road, you can't fully predict the weather - even Alaska in the summer has heat waves. I love the simplicity of these power stations and prices are coming down.

Fyi, as you get older, your body doesn't manage temperature as well. I used to work in triple digit weather. Now, I have problems cooling off. I'm resigned to needing shore power when it's hot.

hang on !!! in your last video that i just watched you rubbished lithium batteries till the cows came home ! and you said dont waste your time buying lithium set ups get agm batteries and in this video you are promoting a power station that has lithium batteries in it ! god i wish you would make up your mind !

Hey friend, I know it can be confusing at first, none of that is contradictory. In the video you are referring to, we are talking about the cost associated with updating the chargers in your RV and tow vehicle. If you give the video another watch, the conclusion is that you can buy power stations like this to get the best of both worlds. I wasn't rubbishing lithium, I was making the suggestion that theres no "drop in" and that power stations are the best, most versatile value. Essentially, I was saying the same thing. Thanks for tuning in.

@@DIYOutdoorLife well i need a system that can do it all, run a fridge, a big freezer, 3 150watt fans, phone charges, laptop, lights, small window air con ( 2000watt ) and power tools, it would be for a big enclosed car trailer that has been converted into a bug out unit ( as we live in a cyclone prone area ), what would you suggest, you see there are millions of videos on youtube that say use this or dont do this and it is hard to workout what you really need and all the local shops just want to sell you what they want,

@@rickute1458 this is the dilemma we all run into. A system that can do that costs an arm and a leg. For a bug out trailer like that, I would cover the entire roof with solar panels. From there, I would favor a home built system because they are serviceable. If that's not an option, I would go with the EcoFlow delta pro platform. It's huge, capable to do anything, and expandable. They're even capable of going up to 240 V AC and running an entire house. In order to do that, you're going to be spending five figures. That seems like a lot of money, but when you're building a house, you easily pay an electrician more than that to wire things up and then you still have to pay the utility bill. At least with these systems they are truly disconnected from the grid. Good luck with your project, keep me in the loop ! Below, I'll post a link to the platform.
