    50k in 2 1/2 weeks, then 50 miler in April. Scale back in June and July and enjoy an Alaskan cruise. Then back to training for road marathon in December. I’m glad to be recently retired and have plenty of time for training!

    Last year on Jan 1 2023, I set a goal to get back into running consistently and created an 18-month training plan for myself and started the next day. 12 months in and I'm still on track! I started very small, building slowly and intentionally and have since tackled 50ks, a 50M, and my first 100M is on deck in May! Gearing up for epic adventures and staying true to the plan -- putting in the work, putting my goals out there to the universe so that I'm accountable, and targeting distinct and achievable milestones have been key!

    Can't wait to see your HURT100 video! One of my goals for 2024 is to run my first 100 miler (UTE100 in August). I'll continue running regularly each week, but will increase my mileage into the 60-70 miles weeks leading up to the race, and also add a few back to back long runs. Additionally, I hope to do a few epic runventures (30-50 mile runs). Those will be more for fun, but also good mental and nutrition training. Great video and advice Simon!

    My general aim is to push forwards at around 15-20% every 6 months; that's not always just distance as I consider the training "volume" too. This year I'm starting off with an ambitious marathon PB attempt (3 months out and I have no idea if it's possible, but I'll stick to my comprehensive training plan and see what happens - the journey is the fun bit). Then slowing right back down with an aim to double my summer salt flats distance from 40k to 80k. Both are stretching, significantly different, but potentially doable.

    Running goals for 2024: slog through a cold New England winter, 50k in April, Midstate Massive 50mi in October, and perhaps take a stab at a sub-20min 5k somewhere in between. I fear the 5k the most!!!

  • @runningwithsimon

    @runningwithsimon

    6 ай бұрын

    @@Kelly_Ben The Whites above tree line in winter is no joke - that wind is brutal, and the sheets of ice can be real bad! The closest I've ever been to dying on a trail from stupid decision was doing Mt Washington in winter with only microspikes (Nora didn't have crampon so I gave them to her and attempted with micro). Let's just say it's a good thing I've extremely skilled with an ice axe - I had to self arrest at least at least 30 times on sheets of ice. I'm always safe in mountain and turn around when there is any risk - except that one time, which was reaaally dumb. Never again!

  • @Kelly_Ben

    @Kelly_Ben

    6 ай бұрын

    @@runningwithsimon That’s what I find so exhilarating about it! I did Washington about 6 times in bad weather, with the necessary gear and a partner with same or greater experience- and it was INCREDIBLE… yes, ice axe skills and crampons are a must for safety, but even with the right gear, it’s dangerous. I summited once with wind gusts up to 90 mph. I was standing at the summit sign, and a gust lifted me up into the air, then hurled me backwards about 12 feet! I landed at the base of the rock pile, and thankfully a good amount of snow and a pack full of extra layers saved me from injury. I’ve set my limits at -20 degrees and 75 mph winds. It’s the only time I’m “present”, tuned into the now… no letting my mind wander like it always does, squirrels chasing each other around in my skull. I was supposed to do a midnight climb of Washington last weekend but I’m still healing from a fractured foot. But I wouldn’t be running Washington, I know my limits! Lol

    Good advice here. I want to get better at hills but watching this I realise I actually need a plan to achieve this! Better start thinking! And with regards to weight loss - be careful - this can be a complicated subject for anyone who has struggled with disordered eating and eating disorders. I have always been quite fit and maybe 10 kg too heavy. It's taken me decades to come to terms with this and while losing a few kilos would make my slow ass faster, I'm happy just being fit and strong and finishing.

I'm just getting back into consistent running, and I love getting into the mountains, so I figured I could combine those two things.
