I started trapping again this year, haven't done it since I was a teen but just running a few on the family land.

I lived in California my whole life and love this channel. I think it’s awesome that trapping is still apart of our culture and traditions. People will always want to hate and make judgments but they more often are talking from a place of ignorance and naïveté. God bless you folks still running trap lines, I admire your life style and quite frankly, I’m just really jealous. One day I’ll leave this trash state 😂😂

Those old time sets are usually great, I got started with a 1948 copy of Trapping North American Fur Bearers, that book taught me so much.

Your backyard line produces a HECK of a LOT of animals compared to what I was used to in our big backyard.(farms and farms sloughs and river and hay meadows etc.etc.)

Your backyard line reminds me of my small line. Flooding is a constant struggle. Right now I have 2 beaver traps under 5' of water. Raining 6 days now. Coons are the stable and usually 2 to 4 reddy's. Keeps me occupied and is lunchroom conversations. Thanks for the video. Happy new year 🎉

Great video! Though it isn’t my back yard, that’s the kind of line I typically run. About 6-8 footholds and about 6 dp’s. Tons of fun and I have caught as much as I wanted.

Things have changed so much since I was trapping using a pocket set, with a 1 1/2 Victor coil spring, with just a few duck feathers around the opening for an attractant and "bait." Way back when I was doing that I never had to skin them. The sporting goods store that I sold them too had a market for the meat too, so when I get some animals I'd dispatch them and put them whole in my big chest freezer. When the freezer got full I'd take them to the store and sell them. I worked in construction back then so trapping season happened when most of that work slowed down in the winter, so it helped keep food on the table and a roof over our heads.

Did some back yard trapping with great success!

I appreciate you confirming that sometimes the critters just do not run. I have a small line out and target coyotes but that has been a bust this winter. Caught two in the fall... I do not set for raccoon because I end up catching them anyway... But I am just not seeing a lot of sign not even catching them on cameras either... Great video!

I started 3 years ago just running a small line on my 20 acres of land using a dozen traps. Worked just great for me then and I still do exactly the same short line set up now. All I do is simply relocate the traps as needed to cover all of the territory. I'm not doing my trapping for fur harvesting but for predator and nuisance animal control. On my land, primarily there are only 6 wildlife species to trap, with raccoons and possums being abundant and the primary targets. So dog proofs work great for those. I typically set half my line with dog proofs. The other half is set with Duke 1 1/2 traps primarily to catch fox which are a nuisance species here in Mississippi. I don't actually have many skunks on my land so in three years I have never caught a skunk. An occasional bobcat will pass through along with a few coyotes now and then but they are few and far between. There are no muskrats in my area and I have only seen one beaver on my creek. I simply shot the beaver. Was simpler than trapping him. However, my land is in the most urbanized county in our state and abuts developed areas on two sides. Thus it is forever inundated with stray dogs and domestic house cats. The 1 1/2 traps are great for catching cats. Unless the dogs and cats are collared and have their rabies tags, I consider them to be strays or abandoned animals who will chase, harass, or outright kill the wildlife I am trying to preserve. So if I catch a dog or cat who isn't collared and tagged, I remove all of them from my land just like any other nuisance animals or predators. Most larger dogs can pull out of a 1 1/2 and of course won't be caught in a dog proof. Thus by sticking with the smaller traps, most canines won't actually be caught. Running a well placed small line set up half and half as I explained has worked extremely well for reducing the population of the primarily predators who eat turkey and wood duck eggs, kill songbirds and game birds, prey on baby squirrels, or occasionally even kill a few mature turkeys and baby fawns. To me, its well worth my time and the minor expense to trap for predator control as it truly does improve the chances for many non-predatory game animals to survive and thrive. I respect those who trap for the fur harvesting and are looking to make the experience profitable by running long lines. But there are many benefits to simply trapping for nuisance and predator control too. For that you certainly don't need a long line with 50 to 100 traps.

I use to snap my waders until I helped pull a fisherman out of a river that was upside down because he stepped in a deep hole then his waders filled with water and he went down like a float on a bream After I saw that I went and literally cut the strap off because I have had to take a pair of pliers just to get them undone Love your videos You are the reason us older guys keep going

First farm I set just this little area and caught a red fox, something like 15 raccoons, and 2 mink. I was set early jan to mid feb.

Your videos are great. I just started using a pellet gun for dispatching critters. I really liked the scabbard you put your pellet gun in. I have not been able to find one for the bigger pistol air guns. You didn't say what it was but do you know.

What kind of wire do you use to hold your dog proofs with the fence staples? Is it a certain gauge? Is it just regular fence wire? I was checking traps two weekends ago and ended up having my wire snapped overnight and the trap was gone. Thanks for all of your videos! They are very helpfully for a new trapper!

in some of your other videos you have said that sometimes from work you check your traps later in the day. can you help me out? if the sun comes up. and I havent checked my coon traps by say 9 am they half of them have pulled out of the cuffs. only way I have found to keep them in is to set 2 so they get both hands caught, coons are greedy here in nj. have even had both paws in one cuff before. I don't have much so only run small lines n only have 14 cuffs . can you help with keeping them in the traps? bridger said we just have really big coons here.

I have 15 or so coons on deer feeder at a time. Gonna try to set some dog proofs. I wonder what I could bait with that will lure them away from the corn and rice bran in the feeders. GREAT channel thanks for the content.

I've been following your channel for awhile now and it's always a lot of help but do you have any tips for trapping in an area that is mostly low marshlands?

Have one smaller property that got me started trapping. Up to 7 raccoons and 5 possums thus year about the same last year. Still no canines but I'm working on it. He did say could get me a few more property's if I wanted but need to get the traps lol

Farmland is well drained. fields shed water fast into creeks during rain storms

Ah ha... Out west here, we don't see that kind of fluctuation unless it's flash flood type conditions.

lol never easy seeing them spaz out after u shoot them in the head. i hope they aren't suffering during that part, who knows. crazy like a bird after you pull their head off.

You need to watch Sam woods outdoors KZread video about bait stations. You can set up a bait station a week earlier and then the animals will come to you. I think it's titled cheeseburger raccons or something like that.

My brother used to be a dealer for Yoder so I bought my wading boots from him. I have 5 pair and they ALL leak! I finally bit the bullet and bought a pair of all rubber boots and have never looked back!
