If you're playing old school D&D, that long corridor has a huge effect on the game: you get a wandering monster check every other turn while traversing it, and your torches burn down.

True. However it still makes no sense ;)

If you are digging a massive underground lair, the long corridors help with stability. If you mash all the voids together, then the walls and pillars have to hold up the entire mountain above them. Make smaller chambers separated by corridors, and let some of the solid rock do the work!

Cracking show! I love the idea of a huge dark room in your dungeon!

Wait a min... of course super long corridors in dungeons exists in the real world world. In fact the very ancient world which most likely spawned the idea of dungeons for the game. Ancient Egypt has tons of underground tunnel complexs. I have so many of these designs saved for my Egyptian game I’m working on. Look up Senusret III Abydos tomb. It’s literally more corridors than rooms as most the Egyptian Underground Complexes were. They were laid that way for their reasons which didn’t meet our modern way of thinking it’s a waste of work and resources to cut. The ideology and purpose of the complex’s, dictated the layouts over the efficiency of the building. K sorry I’ll get off my soapbox. The rest of the vid I’m completely with you though!

Ramps to drag stuff down. Besides a tomb is not built to be functional. It's a storage bin for dead people! Still doesn't make any sense. Just because the ancient Egyptians did it sometimes, doesn't make it logical, or practical. Also when "getting to the action" a short, or no corridor is preferable :)

Long corridors, wandering monster hellscape you mean. What's that sound? Grinding of steel on stone getting louder behind you, a wall of spinning metal rolling down the long corridor towards you. I hope you run faster than it can roll hahaha. Maybe that's why they built it in there? Just to splat PCs in fun ways.

Hey G, Hey Scotty, excellent video guys. What a fountain of information. Will diffidently refer to this video when making any dungeon. The room, corridor, room advice was really great stuff. The food & water source was also great. Meeting the boss in everyday activities, really like that one. There has been a few western movies were they had the bad guy either caught on the toilet or using the outhouse as a hiding place. This is probably my favorite video so far on this channel. You guys had me laughing a handful of times. Great back and forth between you too. Thanks G, Scotty & have a great day.

I've been reading Delicious in Dungeon. It is an amazing Mega-dungeon comic. Worth looking into for ideas.

I used the mega dungeon, Under the Tavern, to hook my players on terrain. They are a little sad when I used the battle maps, which isn't often. They have asked me more than once when will you make a Part II.

slightly hair splitting Gareth but, that dungeon style with the long halls with a room on the end DO exist... underground structures like subways and sewers are pretty much all hallway with a random room here and there ;) but yeah I get what you're saying, it's annoying in computer games too Great tips guys, thanks!

Not as structures that people live in, nobody lives in "service tunnels" by choice.

@@QuestGivers lol fair enough. Depends on the setting I suppose. Some post apoc setting maybe, but I can't see anyone doing that in a medieval fantasy

1 explanation I that made sense to explain the 200' corridor is the dungeon was at one time a mine.

That makes sense, but not every dungeon was once a mine, some might have been a legitimate goblin icecreamery :)
