RUNDAS BATTLE THEME Feels Deeper Than Most METROID Music

Музыка

Today we are for the first time listening to some Metroid Prime music. This is Rundas Battle theme from Metroid Prime 3 Corruption. Although, I don't have many memories of playing 3, listening to this reminded me so much of that characteristic sound of Metroid Prime 1 and 2.

@@DaviVascAnother tidbit: I’m pretty sure the end section with that one diminished chord played with those particular instruments represents Phazon or Metroid Prime. If you listen to the themes of other bosses connected to or influenced by Phazon, you can also hear that chord played with those instruments- Parasite Queen, for example. Here, it represents Rundas’s corruption as he’s finally overtaken by the Phazon.

@@DaviVasc Long story short. Basically the third game was about the Arch enemy of the galactic federation trying to ruin everything with the help of Samus two Arch enemies called Ridley and Dark Samus. (The latter being an evil Clone made from the remains of the final Boss of the first Prime game) The Galactic federation was hiring some of the best Bounty Hunters, Rundas being one of them. He saved her from a 10.000 Meter or so fall during a fight with Ridley but ended up corrupted later by Dark Samus after contact with him broke. So basically Samus had to fight him and after he failed to kill her, got killed by Dark Samus in front of Samus. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

This theme is for a fight against a fellow Hunter, one of Samus's equals, a friend and a comrade. In the opening act of Metroid Prime 3, all of the Hunters, including Samus are simultaneously infused with Phazon by Dark Samus, causing them all to pass out. The Federation steps in and equips each of them with a PED suit to allow them to properly utilize this corrupting toxin now being generated in their bodies. Samus is the last to awaken, and informed that the rest of the Hunters were deployed after their recoveries. One by one, they all drop off the grid, leaving Samus as the only one left to investigate the Leviathan Seeds, Dark Samus, the Pirate Invasion, and their connection to the mysterious planet of Phaze. One by one, she finds the others, corrupted into violent and irrational shells of their former selves, but still just as smart and deadly as Samus herself. Rundus is the first she finds, her first glimpse into what fate lies in store if she fails her mission and gives in to the poison. Out of respect, and duty, she personally takes him out to protect his good image, and end his suffering.

That one observation about the militaristic snare drums you pointed out is a very nice touch. You notice that they start off filled to the brim with power and epicness and slowly grow weaker and weaker overtime. Which perfectly symbolizes a warrior like Rundas losing his strength. The former heroic image is beginning to completely die out until there's nothing left but atmosphere drowning in the darkest emotion imaginable. This soundtrack is a masterpiece in every aspect.

Good to know this track still makes me feel things all these years later. Of all your allies in the game that got corrupted and mind-controlled, Rundas seemed like he fought the hardest against it. On the world you eventually fight him on you're constantly finding evidence of him helping you. A bridge of ice over a chasm, a bunch of difficult enemies frozen to the walls, things like that. You can even spot him watching you from a distance in a few places, before he flies off. Before his boss fight even starts, he shows up to help you defeat some enemies, with his theme heroically playing and everything. Then he starts acting strangely and a phantom image of Dark Samus appears over him, as if brushing away the last bit of his resistance. The sinking feeling in my stomach as this battle theme started and the game handed control back to me sucked. But you know, in a good way. Beating Dark Samus at the end was all the more satisfying after she made me kill a character I liked.

I've written like 3 books (exaggeration) in total talking about this one soundtrack, so I'll save myself some breath by saying that it is without question my all time favorite video game soundtrack. Emotion, power, tragedy, heroism, regret, pain, sorrow, conflict, loss, grief, and destruction. Rundas Battle has it all to quintessentially represent the untold amount of catastrophe that's in full agonizing display when you're forced to pull the trigger on the one who's done so much for you, and that putting him out of his misery is how you repay him. The fight against Rundas is even worse since you're left with 2 options on how slow or quick you want to kill him. It gives new meaning to painfully easy and it all belongs to a character that deserves so much more. A very rare sight to see in the Metroid series, and that's what makes the fight and Rundas himself so damn iconic. Thank you for covering this.

I love how 'icy' this theme sounds. Perfect for a fight against someone who wields uses ice in battle. As some have been noting, Rundas isn't 'just a bad guy' in this game. At the beginning of the story, he starts off sane and merely as a fellow bounty hunter working with the Federation. Each of the other three hunters, and yourself, get infected with a radioactive substance. This substance is the reason why the other hunters go crazy and attack you, and throughout the game you also show signs of it taking its toll on you. Each fight with these hunters is a reflection of what will happen to you eventually if you are to fall to its influence.

I clicked this video just to like it. I don't even need to watch it. The title alone speaks so true to me. Rundas sets the tone for the rest of the game. The relief to see Rundas mingles with the corruption you've experienced to create this free-lance chilling dirge. Rundas is here... but he's NOT the one in control. He's not the operator, he's just been taken over by his hunting instincts (or the corruption brought out his primal hunting instincts). The Phazon is a mutative, semi-sentient toxin that gives you strength, but it demands you give up your mental restraints to harness it. If you stay in hypermode too long, you become corrupted & game over. This fight is what Metroid Prime 3 is all about. Using friends/coworkers as unwilling roadblocks to make the player & Samus feel even MORE isolated in a game series about solo exploration.

This is an incredible track to select! The Metroid Prime orchestra is so evocative and Prime 3 just adds this extra sense of gravitas and stakes. At the start of the game, Dark Samus infects Samus, Rundas, and the other bounty hunters they're working with with phazon, knocking Samus out for a month. Rundas and other bounty hunters wake up and the Federation sends them out on new missions before she wakes up, but they soon lose contact with all of them. This is the theme for when you finally run into Rundas, but he's actually toward the start of the game. Metroid Prime 3 is just so moody and tells a very emotional story with a silent protagonist and not much dialogue.

You know the sad part about it all? Rundas took an interest in Samus from the first time they seen each other in the briefing room ( a few side glances at each other). Then he was the only one to actively save / communicate with Samus through the first part of the journey ( good instance was when he said "we're the guy guys , right Samus?" On the Elevator section) . Allegedly from a scan somewhere or from the AI states that Rundas kept checking on Samus until he was deported on his mission to Bryyo. Then his final "save" was freezing over the space pirates before getting possessed by Dark Samus fully. Then kills himself before Dark Samus can do it again so he spares Samus from doing it herself.

Explanation: In metroid prime 3, Dark samus evolves again and discovers a new ability, the power to use her own phazon to corupt and controll other life forms. She uses that to reach the origins of phazon (the living planet phaaze) and to control it for her purposes. After that she infects samus and the other 3 bounty hunters to controll them, since samus did an extra effort in the first battle she took 2 weeks more to wake up from the infection, however the other 3 were corrupted. The thing is Rundas feels different because its supposed that he was a good friend of Samus, and he wasnt fully corrupted. Thats why he has some moments of lucidity despite the corruption, so he tries to save samus but at some point he is forced to fight her. At the end of the battle he decides to end the battle by hitting himself with his best attack since he had the last moment of self controll. The rest of the bounty hunters are kinda different. For instance, for Ghor samus was basically his proffesional competition, and for Gandrayda samus was his rival but since Rundas was her friend is kinda sad he was corrupted by dark samus :3 About the song itself, consider Rundas is essentially a boss battle based on a guy who fly and who uses ice attacks, thats why i suppose they used all thoose harmonycs (to remember a crystal of ice), The "military vibes" probably are a reference to his past with samus and the galactic federation (also, to rundas actitude, since he is based on the same principles); the guitar part is probably a way to give it a propper identity to the song, and the last aggresive part is probably a reference of the corruption of rundas when he is forced to use the hypermode agasint samus. Essentially think about this.... How would it sound a battle against a friend who controlls the ice and who is extremely powerfull, elegant and methodic who is progresively being controlled by an evil entity? Thats probably how this theme was created :3 P.D.: This part ( 7:27 ) is located in a moment of the song where the player in the gameplay usually reaches a phase of the battle where rundas starts to create a big ice-phazon pillar to destroy most of the scenario in area (what is curious since is probably the most ominous moment of the song) :p

I played them before, but not a lot… until then). Another series full of great music, and as many have mentioned, this was a more emotional fight, especially for a Metroid game. Despite the fact that Rundas (and the other two bounty hunter characters in this game) does not get much screentime, or lines of dialogue, what little screentime he gets in tandem with this song does a fantastic job of painting a picture of the kind of character he is. Stoic with a sense of honor, though a bit of a loner. The sense of sadness in the song comes from the fact that the entire plot of Metroid Prime 3 revolves around the main villain essentially controlling the minds of things around it in order to spread its influence across the universe. This includes the Space Pirate army, all three bounty hunter characters, and even Samus herself if you aren't careful. So when you fight Rundas, you're essentially fighting a comrade in arms who has been brainwashed beyond saving. This comes into play again during the last portion of the song which sounds like a cacophonous mess, as if his brainwashing as turned him into a monster with no thoughts except killing Samus. They really tried to get you attached to these characters (which is unique since the series rarely featured any meaningful side characters at the time this was released) but I think they also kind of blew their load a bit early with Rundas. All three bounty hunters assist Samus at some point with a big mission near the beginning of the game, but the other two take care of issues that Samus could have easily handled herself; Rundas literally saves her from falling to her death after a fight with Ridley. Then on top of that, he has the best theme out of them all, no contest. And he's the first of the three that you fight.

  • @manuelpulido7721

Rundas is the Third boss of the game. When you meet him in game he is a fellow bounty-hunter like Samus. He is an alien that uses primarily Ice. He is, no pun intended, pretty chill, he says stuff like ""Hey, relax! We're the good guys! Justice will prevail and all that stuff." and "These Pirates are more fragile than they appear", he even saves you one time after your fight with Ridley. But after the everyone gets infected by Dark Samus the federation sends him to another planet and loses signal of him and the other bounty-hunters. When you meet him he is Corrupted and controlled by Dark Samus and starts to fight you until you finally put him out. Those disturbing cords at the end I believe they are to represent that Corruption in Rundas.

To me it always felt like the electric guitar symbolizes Rundas in this track, and the way it plays through the 4 "major" sections also shows how he's feeling and living the fight on his side : In the 1st section the two just meet face to face and are ready for the duel. Until now Rundas have been trying to avoid Samus, seemingly not caring that much while Samus understand she has to eliminate her friend, because he's corrupted and it's her duty. Like you said, the drums and their militaristic tone emphasize more on the combat aspect than the emotional one. At this point you can only hear very faint traces of the guitar because Rundas isn't really trying to express anything. The 2nd section feels like the fight is slowly shifting : the more they fight the more Samus remembers that she's attacking a friend that saved her life earlier, duty isn't the main concern anymore. The drums and percussion becomes a bit quieter to shift on a more emotional aspect, just like you also described with the change of base. Meanwhile the guitar is appearing more frequently because deep inside, Rundas attempts to resist the urge to kill Samus, and the guitar is the manifestation of this resistance. The next section feels more like a realization between the 2 fighters and the emotional peak of the duel. The drums and percussion are very faint compared to the 1st section and the guitar is also completely silent. If this scene was turned into a movie you could almost picture a short break in the fight with Samus and Rundas just watching each other, not saying anything, because they both realize the situation they're in, they both wish they could stop but they also know it can't be resolved peacefully. One of them will die, there is no other choice. The last section with the repeating disturbing chord feels like the moment the fight finally carry on after the break. The fact that *this* is the moment you can hear the guitar the most, really makes me think Rundas is desperately fighting back against the corruption, he might even be trying to say something to Samus but he just can't. Because of the corruption he's not in control anymore, and you can hear the struggle between the disturbing chord which represents the corruption, and the guitar which represents Rundas. It doesn't really feel like the two are playing together, both are trying to overcome and drown each other out, and you can hear that the guitar only have a few instants when it's clearly heard without the disturbing chord, because Rundas is losing his internal battle too... This is just my interpretation and not necessarily what happens in the fight of course, but since this track sounds so sad and tragic i like to think this is what actually transpired between Samus and Rundas. Thanks for you analysis on the song, it's always a pleasure to learn how video game music is made !

I dont even understand music theory, but it's great to know that all of my feelings when fighting Rundas are placed so accurately in this rundown. I'd like to hear what you have to say about Gandrayda's theme and Ghor's theme. They're the other two hunters that were corrupted alongside Samus and Rundas. They became much more different after the corruption. Rundas was painful because you could feel how much he didn't want to fight Samus, but was forced to nonetheless. The other 2 are far more malicious. I dont know if it has more to do with how long they were corrupted, or the simple nature of their personalities.

To the last part on what you are saying with the other hunters, i think imo and also story elements its probably a bit of both like time passes and each time you scane the Lizard ppl that got beaten grom Rundas, they are alive at first but as time goes on in different parts of the first plant you go to fir Rundas they are slowly dieing by the time your done there the first time and heading back to your ship, you scan them one last time and it says they are dead. So by the time you meet up with the other hunters more time has passed, with Ghor he sees Samus as a competitor meanwhile the other hunter sees her as a rival. Im sure Dark Samus influence has made their darker characteristics in hanced and probably made it easier for them to change and time. I always thought for Ghor when you first see him in the cut scene when you're about to use your Plasma Bean to help the arora unit, Ghor misses Samus and does his talking, i think the real Ghor was resisting Dark Samus cus i think he could have killed her there also he gave Samus a hint and kinda helped her to find out whats kinda going on imo. After i beat him and stuff, i played a little bit more and stop cus life so i don't fully know what goes on after that i just know the last hunter sees Samus as a rival and she more of an S whenever she hits Samus.

A memorable track from an extremely memorable moment. The devs worked really hard to make Rundas a very likeable and competent comrade who could have easily been a leading role for the rest of the game, and then he’s gone. He’s set up to make you feel loss and it’s super effective.

so basically the federation called multiple boutny hunter, but they all got corrupted by the phazon from dark samus's phazon beam. Only Samus managed to stay herself with a device they added to her suit. During the whole game you'll have to fight the corruption within Samus, and fight the now corrupted fellow bounty hunter, some Samus concidered as friends.

Something really interesting about Rundas's fight is that he's the only one of the hunters to lose his ability to speak after being corrupted, and with some of his actions and the fact you see Dark Samus's appearance over him one can infer that his will was strong enough to resist the corruption and had to be personally controlled.

I will note that hints of phendrana drift transition into this theme Rundas' fight to me symbolized how they were friends, maybe even tell a story of how they met and now his corruption forces him to battle her, samus' themes usually have the choir notes so i believe the guitar is mainly for rundas and the chords at the end is a realization that "Dsrk samus" has caused this corruption, symbolizing that everyone else may be going through this process as well, even her.

One thing I'm surprised that didn't come up was the inclusion of distorted lyrics. It might be up to interpretation, but there (especially during the disturbing portion at the end) noises that sound very much like "{word} Samus", such as "Fight, Samus!" But once again, what is brought up is delightfully spot-on, a joy to see in a blind assessment of my favorite theme of this game.

Rundas fight is indeed tragic. He was suppose to be Samus's partner during the misson she was in, but ended up corrupted and forced to fight the control Dark Samus had over him, that's why, unlike the other two bounty hunters, he just couldn't speak clearly. In the end Rundas is killed with his own ice powers, either Dark Samus used his own power to kill him, or Rundas killed himself before Dark Samus could control him again because before it seems like Rundas regained self control. By the way, Rundas is of the first bosses and is from Metroid Prime 3 Corruption.

Actually the way I look, I believe it was Dark Samus DID indeed killed him because when Samus defeated Rundas, she doesn't want to kill him. She saw as it looked like Rundas snapped out of himself and tried to reach out to Samus before he met his demise by Dark Samus, impaling him with his own ice pillar.

The drums are communicating to the player that this is indeed a duty call. But those drums that propel you forward meet heavy resistance from Samus emotionally. It is her duty to eliminate Rundas, but it is one of the most regretful acts of duty in her life. The drums signal "terminate" like some dissociated machine, but the lead and chords are how Samus really feels. 4:26 gives the impression of someone else's life flashing before you. It encompasses memories; a special moment shared (Which was Rundas saving Samus's life).

Rundas was a great.... man? Robot? Person. He was a great person. An honorably bounty hunter who saved Samus at least once (maybe more, but I distinctly remember one). Unfortunately, he was corrupted by the poison known as Phazon. The fight was tragic. You had to put him down. Though, it feels like your fight gave him a moment of clarity as he finished himself off rather than succumbing to the toxin and hurting anyone else.

He didn’t kill himself; not intentionally. Either he actually lost control of his own cryokinesis and it caused him to impale himself atop his own ice formations, or Dark Samus had caused it through some subtlety in his mind. It’s a lot more upsetting, but Rundas looked a lot more confused than lucid in his absolute final moments.

Not entirely, imo spoilers for Metroid Prime 3: Corruption. I think in the plant last seen of Rundas before he went MIA like the other hunters, there's one part some players miss it on their first playthrough of you look up you see him watching and then uses his powers to use ice to fly away. I think that was him fighting to not hurt Samosa, before the Boss fight he fires his Ice beam attack at Space Pirates and the their ships killing them then just staring at her probably what I think was him still fighting to not hurt her, but then Dark Samus takes full control and the fight starts. This is one of my favorites OST/boss fights in the series, this was the first time in prime and the normal series were one of you're allies/closer then that friends has gotten taken over by a poison called Phazon all 4 hunters including Samus have it I find the other hunters where a bit different case Ghor thinking of you as a competitor the other one she thinks of Samus as a rival. Of course those 2 macking Samus was probably Dark Samus and her influence on them. All 3 where probably one of her first friends she has met in her business and she tried so hard to save them... In a way I think Rundas and 3 hunters each teach her something important since in the timeline this was her like 4th big mission she was on and what made the hunters big was that they all accomplished big feets like Samus. Sorry for the long message lol, it just one of my favorite series haha 😅

Yeah, I think Rundas is that one Hunter Samus got emotionally hit the most out of the three. For me, Ghor doesn't seem to care about Samus but cares about getting the job done. I can see he can be beneficial to work with Samus and other Hunters. Gandrayda on the other hand, is Samus's rival but more of a friendly rival. Since she was hit with Phazon by Dark Samus, she thinks of it as having more power but that power leads to her getting corrupted very quickly.

The music is tragic because the context of the game is. Unlike most Metroid bosses you're not fighting some evil alien monster thing. Rundas and the other hunters were good people turned mad and evil by no will of their own, who have to be put to rest by Samus as an act of mercy.
