I hear people going berzerk about the exagerated cropping, or how a Gopro has better image quality. But this thing is absolutely what we need in our flying toys. It's lightweight like nothing else, reasonably priced and good enough to record and stabilize our outings. No, I'm not straping an expensive camera in my quads and planes. I'm sold on this one. Thanks gyrflow, Runcam and, of course, thanks Curry Kitten for opening my cheap eyes for this lovely little camera.

Absolutely - in a great deal of cases this will be enough. It's not the best, but 99% of us aren't making video for a professional shoot so it doesn't matter

I have the insta 360 peanut caddx and bought the thumb pro to have more recording time. But I’m so disappointed with the quality after gyroflow. Unusable!

I feel like Runcam after all those years finally read my mind and made exactly the product I wanted all along: Affordable, no display that can break, no heavy battery, low weight and decent image quality. Gyro data, ND filters and UART control are also nice additions. Of course even better image quality would be better still but I think this is the perfect compromise for many FPV pilots that don't want to fly in fear of breaking an expensive camera. Well done, Runcam.

I just uploaded a video (Gyroflow Stabilized) and I know for a fact that my results could be better with proper camera settings. (and better video editing software of course)

Nice to see you get your hands on the Pro. Great results - looks so much better. Will be good to see on a 5" with some acro manoeuvres.

If I ever decide to strap a camera to one of my whoops or quads this will be the one. I have never recorded any of my fpv flying to date as I just do it for the fun and have never really found a reason to film my flying. Now if I decided to put it on YT, this would be great, but I don't see myself doing that anytime soon. But thanks for the review of this little gem, I think Runcam may have a winner at the price. It's handy sometimes - like if I see something interesting like 5 deer just staring at me, and all I can do is show some DVR to people... but yeah, depends on what you want to do with your footage

Winter is coming... it's certainly bloody freezing outside now - so hopefully the need for ND filters will become less so

Gyroflow is great but adjusting the settings is important to het decent results. Sometimes, depending on the gyrodata i guess, it is “load, sync and export”, and sometimes it’s “Load, sync, tweek, sync, adjust, think, sync, tweek, cross fingers and export” But it is still a great piece of software i think

I was happy that I could literally load/sync/export in this case - although as demonstrated I noticed how leaving spurious gyro data whilst I was throwing the quad around prior to take off gave some bad results for a while. I hope it continues to be easy!

thanks, i have 2 two runcam 5's with zero time on them because i could not get them to function at all. this one sounded too good to be true and i thought - no way runcam ! but your review may get me to chance it one last time. so, cheers for that.

I think it's fair to say that, of course, your mileage may vary. But if you can mount it on a reasonably stable quad you can get some fairly decent footage out of it.

I have the original, it's the worst fpv purchase I've made, I don't really want to pay runcam again but this looks great smoother out, definitely please test on a 5" as that will be the decider for me I think, keep up the great work mate

Yeah - the original still leaves a bad taste in the mouth and getting better on the follow up doesn't fix that. I did ask RunCam what they intend to do for users of the first one, and they tell me they will continue to develop the firmware to make it work better with GyroFlow.... so, we'll see

Interesting, I just got mine and I don't have the same settings options you have. I can only change the video settings and I have no general settings tab.

Great review. Can the cam mode shown at 8:22 be used as an FPV camera?

Nope - at least not in a way I can think of. You've got a USB connection as a webcam, which there's no analog or regular digital out that any VTX could currently use

The mount you found on thingieverse, is it a go pro base? I just purchased one based on your review and I want to get some extra mounts for my different quads. Thanks for the detailed review.

Yes - the one I modified is this one www.thingiverse.com/thing:5423734 I used the step file to make the mount slightly wider and taller, but it's not a great fit. I've just asked the original designer if he would do a Pro version. That mount is GoPro based - the bases that come with the Thumbs a the same idea as the GoPro mounts, but shrunken down quite a bit

It's a baby Ratel. The Ratel's are my preferred analog camera, but also pairing it with a decent VTX is pretty important. I'm using a RushFPV tiny tank (IIRC)

Have you tried a gopro say 7 or above with GyroFlow or the Insta360 one r? Are the more expensive action cams likely to give me better results with GyroFlow ? Thanks for your help in advance!

The GoPro 7 is a bit of an outlier in the way it works, which means it's not suitable to use with GyroFlow. To be honest, I'm trying to do as little with post-processing as possible, so when I use a GoPro 7 to film with (hypersmooth on) like this old example kzread.info/dash/bejne/dqJ4p7awadqWlNo.html&ab_channel=CurryKitten I find the results I get great on their own. This might be different if I was using this commercially and wanted extra control... but in that case I'd be using the very latest greatest GoPro - still with hypersmooth on, as you can take the hypersmoothed GoPro video and use that in Gyroflow. I do have a GoPro 10, but that's still a bit precious to me, so it's just the 7 that goes on a quad.

I can make the regular thumb video come out really smooth in gyroflow. Can you share a sample video with the gyro file of yours so I can take a stab at it?

Can this be used with RF transmitters? Please do let me know ASAP.

just add a sync point at the beginning of the flight to solve the "takeoff-non-stabilized" problem..usually it happened to me when I left the camera recording for a long time before takeoff

As I mentioned later in the video, I found that simply setting the video in/out points in GyroFlow to restrict it to just the flying solved that issue.

Beware of being an early adopter!

Firstly, use a 15hz low pass filter on the gyro if your recording in 30fps and 30hz for 60fps. Secondly, the reason its out of sync at the start of the stabilized clip is because of the huge offset at the first sync point (this also happens right at the end too). And the fact that all your sync points have slightly different offsets means that the video and gyro data keep getting slightly out of sync. The Runcam 5 Orange had this problem and there it was caused by 'duplicate frames' in the video data (but the problem could also be a result of bad gyro data too). So although its an improvement on the original runcam thumb it still seems to suffer from the same problems as the RC5O, which is pretty disappointing because it probably means that to get really good results you would need to run the video file through ffmpeg to remove duplicate frames (if that is what is causing the issue).

btw, the black bars that are creeping into your image even when your FOV slider in Gyroflow is at 1 is caused by a bad lens profile. Once there are better lens profiles added to Gyroflow this should go away.

The FPV tech seems to work like a lot of OS kit. They have an idea but do not know if it is worth R&D so they make a V1 and use it to finance a V2 that works. I like it overall as those who can afford the risk take it for us that cant.

It seems like that - although it really punishes early adopters. I did email RunCam as they seem to have sidelined the original, and I wanted to know if they were going to fix the issue or give their existing customers a preferential upgrade. They claim that they'd keep working on improving the firmware

​@@CurryKitten They should really be a pref upgrade, that should just be standard for all employees (you are the R&D Dept). But on the whole as a company they can subsidise it by charging more for everything like say Apple or let the newer idea's pay for themselves as if a separate project. I do believe some factories work that way as in they get contracts for jobs and get in the staff to fit not permanent employees. Like PAYG factories.

Do the settings save after being powered down. Currently the caddx peanut resets to auto which is a pain hence me looking at this thumb pro

I think so - although I didn't really change anything from the default so i don't know for sure. It would be pretty pointless it not as it would be a massive pain to change the settings to what you want before every flight!

I have the runcam thumb pro, but its low light capability isn't great at all... plus adding any nd filter even in the brightest day the video is really dark to be used, ( i record at 2.7k 60fps, auto shuuter,iso 100)

2nd hand session 5 is qround 150 wich is 1000 times better than a runcam i hated my runcam5 orange but i might try this one for a 3rd person view of my drone

Can you use a powerbank to run the camera via the usb cable?

Yeah - that'll work. You can use the camera when powered from USB. I know this because I managed to accidentally start recording several times whilst I've had it plugged into my computer

@@CurryKitten You can actually, you just need a USB camera app on your phone. I asked this question when I didn't have the camera in my possession. I have since got the camera, and I can confirm you can do something similar on the phone. You even have to press the button to activate the camera like you show in the video, so thanks for that.

Ok - I thought you were talking about changing the settings live... and as you have to do this via a QR code, the answer was always no. Presumably you are just looking at the picture, going back, generating a QR code, do the change and then going back to the USB camera app to check it?

Then having to do the qr code thing. Now I just open the camera app then change settings, then view it again on the camera app.

looks like mine has a flakey gyro. my data does not look like that and gyroflow 1.2 doesn't track it at all

Maybe you need to re-read why you use nd-filters and how to pick the right one (not just guess it).

I have had zero success getting mine to work in gyroflow. Just vibration city and unusable. Quick Davinci software stabilization did ok and no vibrations but 3 different quads and 5 or 6 mounts and just garbage in gyroflow.

Yes - someone showed me some script he made in FFMpeg that did a better job. I did get some tips from another user and with this I've got much better results on a 5" (although 2.5" was always pretty good for me) Once I get that video out, I'd be interested to see if the same idea gets any better results for you

@@CurryKitten I made my own lens profile for it last night and used that instead of the official profile and it seemed to do better. Pretty rough still. I actually get better stabilization using the blackbox log instead of gsv
