This cuts out most alternative expressions - I.e. “ related “ words that are the very basis of poetry, comedy and drama.. English is being shaved to perfection for, and by, the world of salesmanship and persuasion. E.g. we are being made to tick alternative boxes instead of writing our thoughts in a sentence ( which doesn’t answer our needs.). Employees no longer need to be literate. The impact will be massive. These shows are an absolute treasure. No guns, no explosions, no car chases, just the indominable Rumpole standing up for justice and the little man against staid pomposity and the tendency of the ruling class to jump to conclusions. The London xxx-xxxx telephone number format is a bit of a giveaway on the estate agents board, plus a london transport dolly stop ( west country temporary stops would have been a green on white small Bus Stop Square with (temporary) across the middle, or possibly the introduced standard EU Bus Stop Flag on a pole , London had an exemption for using the new style within greater london

This cannot be made today because technical effects are now much cheaper than good actors. This was filmed like a theatre production, with good actors that could remember their lines: because everything was expensive to film, so they did as little as possible, and editing as kept to a minimum. If this was made today there'd film everything over & over so there could be jump cuts, and reaction shots, and every scene would last between 3 and 20 seconds; and the acting would be meme reactions.

Bollard (Peter Blythe) and Erskine Brown (Julian Curry) are Rumpole's foils, and John Mortimer has a lot of fun with them, faithfully rendered in the entire TV production. The actors, including McKern and Mathie of course, give terrific and accurate portrayals of Mortimer's characters. In order to make programming like this, you must start with gifted writing. Then, of course, bringing it to the screen means finding actors who can take on the characters and make them their own, gifted in their own right. In this case, the casting was superb and these roles seemed to be written for these actors. What completely gifted people they are.

Marion Mathies - no one can replace her as Hilda. Hilda in German means 'maid of battle' or the old battle axe! Perfect. But she has a romantic side, and misses the old coot and lives to serve him. Its really sweet. I also love her huge family that pops in and out of trouble. She is so snooty, and talks adoringly about her 'Daddy' while taking jabs at Rumpole and complaining he can never match up, but her family is trash, and Rumpole has to save them every time, ha ha ha!

Fabulously, humourously, wonderfully, currently relevant. So good, honest, witty, finely done. Old Leo was always a superior actor with human insights above the average...Who learns from this today??

I've been a "Rumpole" fan since the series first started. I've read many of John Mortimer's books and I'm amazed and thoroughly impressed at how faithfully the series followed them!

  • @EricIrl

I actually think that the TV pilot and early series pre-dated the books. Mortimer was at heart, a script writer, chiefly for one-off TV plays. The very first "Rumpole" was a one-off TV play in the BBC series "Play for Today". Thames TV (part of ITV) liked it so much that they commissioned the series. Mortimer wrote the character Rumpole with Leo McKern in mind.

@@EricIrl I did not know that. I'll have to check the copyrights in my books. I did hear John Mortimer say that he had originally wanted Alistair Sim as Rumpole but of course, Sim had already departed our dimension. He did say, (and I agree) that McKern turned out to be perfect for the role.

Hilda & Rumpole are a perfect match, both intelligent & humorous. I think Hilda had a little more ambition in mind for Rumpole knowing what a great lawyer he was, but he chose to use his brilliance for the common man. There is the rub in their relationship, she thinks he wasted his talent. Love seeing those two together.
