In 1997, I picked up a 4" SP-101 in .22LR at the local indoor range, where it had languished, unloved and unrented, as a rental gun. After a couple of months under the used-gun counter, I had to pick it up when the price was reduced to $169. Over the last 18 years it has become a favorite and I think I did pretty well.

Just when I think I'm use to your awesome shooting talents, you go and shoot five in a row at the 80 yard gong with a 22 short round. Man, I'm so glad you enjoy making these videos with Big John. All 250,000 + of us get the benefit of the wealth of information you have and great marksmanship brought to us with perfect video work. Thanks so much you two.

This guy is one of the best on youTube. Very easy to understand. Very calm and clear. There are many americans on youTube with a weird accent.

Semiauto .22s will tell you pretty quickly what ammo is junk. In revolvers, it's not quite as big an issue other than an occasional light strike. Plus, it does not hang up the gun.
I’m gonna buy this pistol and a 10/22 next paycheck

It never ceases to amaze me how much fun a little .22 can be even for such an experienced shooter. Big thumbs up.
Hickok sir i LOVE every one of your videos.but what i love even more is that i just got home from work at Ruger at 2AM open a cold beer and click on youtube and the first thing i see is a video of you shoot the exact gun that i just got done making.life is good!
I always enjoy your episodes and became a better shooter and more informed on firearms. Thank you for posting.
I used to use remington .22lr ammo, but it kept jamming in my rifle. Started using CCI, and haven't had a problem since. Never going back to remington ammo again. I might have to go pick up one of those Rugers, I haven't shot a .22 revolver in a long time. They provide a type of fun that you really cant explain.
I have this same gun and it's my favorite one out of my collection great feel in your hands and just the right weight to it to know you are holding a gun
When you first started plinking things with the .22 shorts I thought to myself, "How could anyone not find this enjoyable?"
Very nice little gun! I'm a big fan of .22 revolvers and would love to try the Sp101. Great review, and great shooting!
I like my SP101 for 357 magnum. I have looked at a 10 shot Ruger Single Shot stainless steel and long barrel that feels good that has the same sights. I have an old H&R 9 shot 22 revolver from the 1980's that I plinked with a lot until I got my first Ruger Mark III Hunter model. Now I seem to do a lot of plinking with a Sig 1911 22 LR, a Henry Mare's Leg 22, and a Browning Buckmark. I used to do a lot of plinking with a Marlin 38A and that 9 shot revolver-brick's worth of plinking fun.
GREAT vid, Hickok45. I have the SP-101 in .357 cal, spurless hammer DAO. and it's a beast with the hot loads. Shooting 38s though, it's very sweet and smooth. My friends give me grief about having only five rounds at a time, but I practice and I can hit what I'm aiming at. Shooting for fun sure is...FUN. Thanks to you and John for doing what you do.
You realize, a lot of the reason people watch these videos ISNT to get a to the mm example of a grouping, or lots of crazy technical specifications. Its to enjoy learning about the gun, Hickok's awesome attitude and of course, watching him shoot the place up! Thats the appeal to the videos to me, watching him shoot stuff! So if he did a video where he only fired two shots, that would be really boring!
I've grown up on .22 and .22mag and those times going out with family and friends are some of my best memories.
Thank you so much for reviewing this gun. Great video, and couldn't be funnier hearing him laugh at the shorts.
I like that you don't make excuses for missing. Shows you're an honest man.
I’ve never seen him miss so much

It's an old video, he shoots better now.😉
I love when Hickok walks down on the range and all you hear is brass.
The fun of a .22 revolver is that you can toss a few hundred rounds in your pocket with no inconvenience and take a long woods plink session, again no inconvenience and no magazine loading/dropping/losing!
Great video! I had been looking at these guns lately ever since shooting the 357 version and really liking it. Low and behold, I come on to KZread today and here is Hickok45 with one! I think it's a sign...
It's a beautiful morning in Tennessee! Thank you for the video.
great job hickcock. I usually shoot my Ruger Mark 2 22. when I shoot my 686 or my Glock 23 just to keep shooting without breaking my wallet. Ifind I actually engoy shooting the 22. keep up the great stuff you share with us. thankyou. keep shooting, keep riding, happy trails, life really is good! ernie
Love my Ruger SR22 handgun. Picked it up this spring at a local gun show. Lots of fun for a little dough.
The day after I turn 21 I'm going to my local Ruger dealer and getting one of these in a 22. My cousin from Louisiana brought his up a few years ago during deer season and I've been hooked ever since.
I believe hickok45 needs his own tv show.
I have the .357 mag version of this gun. Absolutely love it! And I also really liked the stock grip, very stylish but found it hard to hold onto when shooting hot magnum loads. So I put the Hogue grips on too. I highly recommend this gun!
I chose this as my first handgun because of this video. I've never regretted it.

@@connor1982 It's a perfect match. They look almost identical, except for caliber.
I enjoyed watching as Hickok figures out the sights on this new gun. I just got my new Ruger Single Ten and will be firing it for the first time later this week.
Can't believe how well you did with the little CBs at that distance! These high quality .22 revolvers are so hard to pass up when they appear in a used gun case. That's why they don't stick around too long even though they seem relatively expensive for a rim-fire gun. Worth every penny - nothing more fun to shoot on the planet!
This video had me breakin a sweat, seeing the recoil and the biblical amounts of damage that 22 hand cannon was causing was truly impressive.
Don't see many folks on You tube firing .22 Shorts. This was really enjoyable, thanks!
I had a Smith and Wesson K frame in 22 caliber. I like the way Hickok always keeps the pistol muzzle down range.
sweet gun I just got one last month and so far im loving it,,also a great looking little pistol
.22 is by far one of my favorite shooting days. I love shooting my Glock 21sf, S&W Model 29, and Desert Eagle .44, but there is nothing like the joy of just plinking with some friends with .22s for hours.
I've got a couple of Ruger Mark III's I shoot on a regular basis. This has give me the fever for a Sp101 .22. Really enjoy your videos. Seems a revolver would slow me down and concentrate more.
the sight picture is significantly better with the replacement sight blade that ruger/midwayusa sells. It has a white outline like a glock rear sight sorta.
Thanks for the video. I went out and got one and love it. One of my favorites. I hate to say it but I like it better than my Mark III's. Go figure. Just an excellent woods - survival piece.
Those hits on the gong with the shorts really were fun. A friend had a Mauser 22 single shot that looked just like a k-98. A genuine Mauser - shooting shorts out of it was as quiet as a pellet gun. Was great for shooting pests around the barnyard at night. As always really enjoy your videos. If I can't shoot as much as I want at least I can get a vicarious thrill of watching you shoot.
The older version of the .22LR SP101 has a full underlug and looks like a smaller version of the GP100 .357 Magnum. I added a front FO sight to mine. I can see this as a great first revolver for a teenager. It feels indestructible and doesn't require lots of pampering.
GOT to love this gun! Beautiful to look at, holds 8, great plinking pistol. Just so much fun to shoot! LR, shorts, all velocity, very relaxing after forever trying to punch in 2" groups with sumtin' else. Like a vacation from shooting while shooting.
Another top notch video. As always.
i always wondered what factors affected my aim... so glad you narrowed them down to two
lol 22 shorts on the gong ! that was pretty cool ! keep up the good work !
YES. A friend of mine showed me his sons taurus 22. revolver, and it was ruined. His son had dry fired it so many times it bent the chamber in the cylinder.
I have a SP101 in 327 Federal Mag. I love it! Great little gun. I've been thinking about sending it to you so you could do a video on it. The 327 Federal Mag is a sweet little round too.
I bought one of these when this model first became available. On the way home from picking it up at the gunshop, my brother in law and I stopped by the gun club to check it out. The trigger pull was a little on the heavy side in both single and double action. This wasn't conducive to accurate shooting but I have done a pile of trigger jobs on SP-101's with excellent results. What was unnerving was having the trigger fail to reset when shooting single action. This happened right out of the box. It occurred with a variety of ammo. When you'd thumb back the hammer it would drop and fire. This was random. You never knew when it would happen. I've tried everything to get it to be 100 percent reliable but it still happens every trip to the range. As I said, I'm very familiar with the lockwork of these revolvers but I can't make this one trustworthy. It hangs in my safe unused for years now because I have no faith in it and can't trade it or sell it with a clean conscience. I could return it to Ruger for repair or replacement but I'd probably sell it as soon as I got it back. I've owned a couple dozen Ruger firearms over the years. This one is the only one that has left me disappointed.
Great video, I've never seen you miss this much before, it's great, makes you seem human 😎
i have the SP101 357mag snubbie and i effin love it its my choice of gun to conceal carry and its everything i wanted. Ruger has done good with the SP101
If you look closely when he starts shooting they slip in a stunt double. Hickok is such a star now they can't afford to risk him shooting awesome cartridges like .22lr. :)
The main reason I bought a single action revolver (Heritage Arms) a few years back was I had piles of mixed .22 rounds in odd containers that just needed to be shot! .22LR, .22 Long, .22 short, and .22 CB shorts. The cool thing about the Heritage was it came with a magnum cylinder, so I can, with a quick change, shoot the .22 WMR, which has a pretty good pop to it. Thanks for enlightening others on the versatility of a .22 revolver, no collection is complete without one! ;-)
I still have the GP 101 & carry it from time to time Great gun, never a problem
You can have so much cheap fun with a great .22 Love your videos!
Thank you for the useful info about the overbearing green fiber optic. I'll just try painting my S&W 617 black sight with white and fluorescent green enamel paint.
I never doubted Hickok45 for a second. If Hickok45 can't hit with a pistol, the universe will divide by zero and explode. That pistol needed the sights adjusted, it's obvious. No, it's actually science.
Still a classic. They will outlast me. They are also classic in every way. I like the sights and the grip feels good for me.
I agree about CCI! They make fantastic .22 (I shoot lots of .22LR and WMR). Definitely worth the little additional price.
You're a brave man, hickok45. I do not fear .357 magnum, I can handle .38 special, but I don't dare pick up a .22 LR gun.
This is just plain fun. Best video in a while .
Elevation or windage. Dang, why didn't I think of that? You sir, are truly a genius.
Yeah, I should have included a trick shot, just for him, something like shooting a tick off the top of the 230 yard gong and lighting a match behind it with the same bullet! :-) Except I might need my S&W Model 41 for that shot, as well as a cooperative tick, preferably one swollen with blood.
I really really like the ruger lcr 22 revolver I tried it out at the range loved it, it is very simple easy compact and light and has 8 shots.

+Brandon Powell I love mine. A bit of a heavy trigger pull, but as Hickok says, you need to with a 22.
Just as a note-- he mentioned shooting those shorts in an old rifle, but that's only for fully loaded 22 shorts. You do NOT want to shoot CB SHORTS in a rifle as they sometimes don't have enough power to exit the barrel in a rifle.
I purchased one back in the spring. Love it.
Excellent review Hickok....I love it. Want one soooooo bad.
22 shorts on the gong! Priceless!
I have a heritage arms single action revolver with 2 diffrent cylinders for magnum or shorts I love plinking with mine. Nice to have when you need a break from high dollar ammo. i have known to get a few squirrels with it also.
There's also the S & W Mod. 617 10 shot .22 LR revolver.
Really like the looks of this model. Can't seem to come across one when I visit my favorite gun shops. Bought a single six before this model came out. Wish I would have waited.
thats actually a really nice looking revolver.i range-fired the .357 model and loved it.
It a nice looking firearm. I have shot a 22 before. It helped me with my sighting in on a Target. They are a fun firearm. Have a good day, an excellent review.
That's a beautiful pistol. Over $600.00 now in 2020. Bought a Mark IV Std. today and sure did do some looking at the 101.
Looks like a great little popper.
Wow looks a lot like my security six. Ruger knows how to make them
Haha, the gong was louder than the shortround :) Nice video as allways!
This model is now next on my short shopping list for my boys to 'plink' with. Thank you!
One of best weapons in zombie apocalipse - 22LR revolver.
Thanks for the response. Much appreciated. I tend to go with the cheapest ammo on the shelf as I am still learning the fundamentals. I'll have to bite the bullet and pay for the good stuff one of these days so I can see what I have been missing.
Great little gun .Great size cleanly made
Went to 2 gun shops today. Being under the age to buy firearms I was expecting to be treated like I'm dumb. To my surprise the were more than happy to let me hold the firearms and give me advise (not tell me what I need). Also got to hear what a suppressor sounded like or in second thought what it didn't sound like.
After buying a 22/45. I like being able to reload quickly with a magazine, but revolvers are so much easier to clean!
Thanks for a great review.
That is a gorgeous .22!
It is a great little gun. I compared it directly with the SW 617 today on the range. The 617 had better accuracy in single action at 10 yards. But, in double action both guns were equivalent in accuracy! This little guy has no kickback, so it can be held on target in double action. The fiber optic sight then makes the difference making it a great little shooter (at least at 10 yards for me). My SP101 has also had a trigger job by Terry G. at Impact Guns which probably also made a difference in improving accuracy. Of course, Hickok45 displays how truly accurate this 22 revolver can be.
Great video as always. I have several Ruger stainless steel revolvers in various calibers. I would like to see a video on cleaning them. Cleaning the forcing cone area is a major pain.
Guilty of a basement range :) I used the Colibri rounds that are even quieter.
My Taurus "Revolver' used to cycle that stuff just fine LOL. I have an old pump action Sports King that would chew through the stuff with very few issues. But it was the constant duds I was getting driving me crazy. Thats whey the lady at Walmart recommended the Federal stuff and I haven't looked back. It's literally 1 Cent more per round compared to the bulk packs but much better in quality. And, I just sold my Phoenix Arms, bought for a plinker and never liked it even just can shooting.
On my wish list TY for sharing
"it put a door in it" LOL Awesome statement!
That gun is better than any Smith&Wesson rimfire hands down I own both Smith and ruger!
Thank you....for your evaluation...
The ad for me was a royal marines recruitment ad. Gotta support dem troops.
On the Ruger .22 revovlers, the chambers are recessed. I've got an SP-101 .22, dry fired it hundred of times, no problems. Same thing for my LCR .22 and Single-Six.
Wikipedia is your friend. Primer is stored in a recessed lip inside the edge of the rim. When the rim is compressed by the firing pin, it ignites the ring of primer which ignites the powder. Wiki will show you pictures to help.
I've own a .22 cal revolver for years. Its a 6 shot but lots of fun and always on target. The sights don't move, and i can adjust for windage and length just from years of shooting it. It is a H&R model 649.
Any revolver video is a good video.
Taurus 605 is a beautiful short barrel revolver. Good luck finding one that does not bind. Mine would not shoot the day I bought it. Now it jams at least one in 6 rounds.
When I was a teen my friend and I shot all the time in his basement with a "bullet trap". It was about the size of a shoebox up on end - with a cutout to shoot into - with a sheet of mild steel inside to deflect the bullet down. Hundreds of shorts shot at that. Hundreds.
