I just bought this weapon like 20 minutes ago. It is my first gun ever. **4 years later and I just realized I had all these replies and likes !! I held on to this gun for maybe 4 or 5 months until I moved on to glock out of curiosity. I absolutely loved this weapon . very accurate out of the box . unfortunately glock peaked my interest tho and ive been on that bandwagon since . today I purchased my first sig (p320 m18). Hoping I enjoy it .

Put on that 'aw shucks' charm, along with years of competition experience, get some land with good neighbors, add a decent camera and start a channel. I'll watch it! I have everything but the charm ;)

I've had Glocks, Sig , and a number of Rugers and the Ruger's were just as good as anything else on the market.

One thing often overlooked about the American 9mm, or just mentioned in passing, is that it is overbuilt. The newer production ones, or the older ones with the recall done, are tanks. You could probably shoot nothing but +p or hot custom loads all day without a worry. I think as the years go by they will gain a reputation of being indestructible.

If I get one in 9mm Parabellum, I will use Federal 9mm +P+ JHP, commonly known as 9BPLE. But I prefer the .45, if I can get one.

I bought a full size because it was on sale for $300. I love mine especially since I am left handed and it is left hand friendly

I'm with you! I buy ruger cause it's not only is it American made it's made right here in AZ. Not to mention they are very reliable weapons for relatively low cost.

when u factor in that these guns can now be had whether in compact or full size at around or under $350, these are a safe bet. i'm really digging the compact and it's overall size even without the thumb extension baseplate. it's reliable as anything out & is built like a tank. i'd say along with the Canik Tp-9 series, the Ruger American is an outstanding value for those not willing to spend over $500 or more.

Most C.C. Fire arms are short and best with a high capacity magazine. This is an excellent handgun that seems to work well. I truly enjoyed the display of marksmanship done to adjust to the aiming and hitting the targets.

I always end up with Ruger. Doesn’t matter if it’s a revolver or semi auto. They are just robust made in the USA firearms that work 👍🏻. I guess I’ve become a fan boy over the years 😂. But I don’t care. I’ve never had a Ruger let me down. I guess I need a new American compact 45 in gray

Just the other day I hit a rifle plate right at 50 yards or so with an old 1960's or so revolver in .22. I hit it once or twice per cylinder which holds 8 per about 6-8 times in a row. That's an accomplished for me and I immediately thought of Hickok. What a great feeling. I'm absolutely hooked with shooting steel these days.

RIP headphones when he played with the ammo at the beginning. lol

This gun really flies under the radar I think. More people should give the American a try. I have the full size and I think it's a great gun. The ergonomics are good, it has quality sights and I shoot it really well. Also, the thing's a damn tank. It's a bigger gun than I want to carry but it works as my nightstand gun.

I've owned this gun since they came out and its my go to for personal carry or concealed carry in the car. I love the size and weight and the clip capacity. Very nice gun for personal carry in my opinion.

@Kev Campbell yes the clip is nice quality and holds quite a few rounds. Standard clip holds 12+1 in chamber. Extended holds 16+1 plenty of rounds.

@Kev Campbell sorry, didn’t know I needed to be “politically correct” in my “magazine” terminology. Magazine is also a paper book, similar to the way people refer to the “clip” as a “magazine” smart ass.

Bought mine last week. Feels great out in the Vegas desert hitting steel plates. Very accurate pistol.

Love this gun. Best shooting one I have ever owned and most accurate. One of the few I have ever owned you can just point and shoot like pointing your finger and it’s still accurate. Also easy on your hands even with +p ammo.

Bought one of these about 4 weeks back and have put about 250 rounds through it and absolutely love it. It is easy on the hands even with +p rounds and very accurate. One of the few I have shot that you can open both eyes and point it like pointing your finger and be on target. Ruger did a great job with this one.

There was a home invasion in FL where the home owner killed the intruder with a shotgun, someone posted a link to your videos, this is one of the best review channels I have seen on youtube since I started in 2005. Keep up the good work. Much love from California.

I've had mine in .45 concrete cerakote for couple years now and its been great. Some thousands of rounds thru it with no malfunctions yet, and still accurate.

I got the full-size version since it first came out. It's big and a bit bulky but it's reliable as hell and will shoot whatever you put through it all day long. And they're reasonably priced compared to Glocks and other guns brand new. No mag disconnect, no manual safety on the Pro versions, really good magazines (and reasonably priced if you look around online, CTD comes to mind) and they will work in the compact version with or without the grip adapter.

The word you are looking for concerning the ability to grip the pistol is one my daughter made up - "gription". It also works when talking about driving on slippery surfaces - "My tires don't have much gription." Thanks for the great videos and information.

I shoot really well with this gun. I also put Tru Glo night sights on it...... Also recently up'ed the spring to 20lbs. We'll see how that goes. Have to say I love it. Talk about easy to take down and clean, too.

had mine for over a year now.... no problems. GREAT shooter!!! Accurate, too. Feels GREAT! The duty version is my "range gun".... and its just a pleasure to shoot, too. My wife likes the "compact" a little better. Easier balance I think, for her. Am looking at the Ruger Security 9 now. Might be easier for "carry". We'll see.

Many guns weigh more then the Glock by design. Shoot ability and the overall feel of the weapon is more important to me as well.

Also marketed as the Ruger "Why-Do-I-Exist" Pistol. This purpose-built duty pistol does not come in .40, just in case your department still uses that round. Notice that they finally did away with the magazine disconnect but their lawyers still made them add the fact to the slide's helpful hints, which includes "read the manual." Honestly if they added a new grip texture and better sights to the SR's everyone would be happy. If they want people to notice the American maybe they should release a .357SIG model, because S&W couldn't hack it with the M&P's.

I have the full size version and I love it. Super accurate and not all that heavy.

I don't think the CZ is even out yet, is it? Anything you hear about it before it is actually out in gun shops is pretty much marketing hype. Still, it COULD be a great pistol. No way to tell until a firearm has been out on the market for awhile and some objective reviews have been done. Also, it gives time for problems to reveal themselves if there are any.

I think Ruger Armerica compact 9 mm is better than Glock-19. 1.) More ergonomic , my friend owned a Glock-19 Gen4 and he told me :::::: G-19 Gen.4 has low slide which very near by backstrap of grip. That any person with fat hand or large size hand, their jaws will clip and hurt while the slide is backing. 2.) Ruger box supply both 12 round and 17 magazines, no need to buy other suitable magazine for yourself. 3.) Ruger retail price always much more competitive than Glock, and Ruger have the same reliability .

Will the compact magazines fit and work well with the full size I've found a 32 rd mag for the compact but nothing for the full size now I think I heard hickok say he just used the full size mage in this one. 1:55

I have shot one, and they aren't bad pistols. They just feel like they are from the past. So heavy and thick, for what it is.

It would be interesting to see you do a video on the Ruger American Compact in 45.

If that additional weight is not noticeable compared to other comparable nines I'll probably be picking one up on the weekend. My local shop has them on order and I'm looking forward to getting my hands on one. I really liked the other full size however the large pistols are not for me as I want to be able to carry mine. I'm kind hooked on Ruger for the quality and great prices.

Very accurate and matter-of-fact review! I chose the "Pro" version of this pistol as my first CC. I love the smaller size and ability to CC 17 + 1 with no issues (I'm 6'2"). Due to a holiday budget, I went with this over a Glock, but I do not have any remorse after putting 500+ rounds through it. I DO wish the grips were better, but the "uncomfortable" plastic grips and Novak sights allow this pistol to be efficiently drawn from a holster.

Nice review, Hickok. I love mine. Just fun and easy to shot and clean. Never hangs up. Good shooting my Tenn friend!

I'd hoped Ruger would address the ergonomic "thumb knuckle" problem by now. Since the frame is not serialized it shouldn't be a huge deal to offer a streamlined frame. I haven't shot one so I don't know if it's a problem for me. It is clearly a problem for others, though. Please, Ruger, don't fall into the 'you're wrong our product is perfect' rut. Listen to customers and take advantage of the modular nature of the American series.
