Arguably the most sensationally exciting international rugby Test of all time. The match had everything didn't it (?), super heroes - amongst them the incomparable Jonah Lomu; the promise of a place in the grand final; the two teams with the most attacking flair across the rugby globe at the time; a glut of extraordinary 'finishers' the like of which we hadn't seen before, nor have we seen since - including the indefatigable Frenchman, Christophe Dominici. Followers of rugby union across the world will be mourning the loss of 'one of our own', irrespective of which jersey we support. Dominici was special, not just to Les Bleus, but to all those who value running rugby at its best. RIP Christophe.

Oh please, this game is terrible. The All Blacks had a sudden identity crisis and put on a horrible performance that was almost saved by some super human stuff by Lomu. The coach and Mertens should've been banned from the sport after this mess.

@@makhabzaranamane6869 NZ seemed to freeze up and choke, but it still took a brilliant late surge from France, who were stunning for a while there as NZ fell apart...It was painful to watch for me as a Kiwi, but there can be no question that this was an incredibly thrilling game, especially being a WC semi final before a brilliant crowd that France had to come from behind late to win. Also consider that this is one of the biggest upset wins in rugby history - France were paying $10.00 to win with the NZ bookies... All of the ingredients were there...This is why everyone but you considers it a classic, and is widely considered one of the greatest games ever.....But you think it was "terrible"? Whatever it is that you're smoking I want some.

@@JimChap Especially the way the game went was also twice surprising... I was looking this match on french TV and at 24-10 for NZ, I was pretty sure all was lost. We had played NZ few weeks before the world cup, they had thrashed France with 50+ points, France was last of the 5N 1999 if I remembered well. if it wasn't for lamaison and the french forwards, I do think that we would have lost. I think French won it more than ABs lost it. French aren't a constant team but when they want it, they can beat anyone on their day. After lomu try, France suddenly wanted to win. Lamaison made the right calls and urged France to wake up, Drop, drop, penalty, penalty, 2 precious kicks for Dominici and Dourthe try after a conquering french pack outrageously dominated the ABs. I think I have read after this match that several ABs player said that they effectively didn't understand what has happened, something like "suddenly French team arised and nobody were able to stop them". Oz was happy because they knew that french never did 2 following great match in World cup... and they had eliminated the favourite. I was pretty sure we wouldn't win the world cup cause on the paper, wallabies were a far better team than France and France was exhausted even more psychologically than physically. An exploit in the world cup and that's all.

First time I watched this absolutely classic World Cup game in full, since 20 years ago here from South Africa. My family is from French decent so my second team is always France. The French were not lucky...they played sublimely in all facets of the game. They also managed to demoralised the All Blacks so that the Springboks got a Bronze medal. Viva la France!! It's got to be the best world cup game ever. There are people who call some of it luck but the French rugby side of the 90s were the best example of how you make your own luck. They took risks and very often the risk paid off, That's not luck. ....BTW, I'm from NZ and it's just so fantastic to have rugby's greatest rivalry back to what it used to be. It got a bit too one sided for my liking over the last 8 to 10 years with the odd exception , but it's back now and I love it.

Dominici had a great game, sure, but I considere Lamaison to be the MOM for this match... He did the french game, he permitted France to stay in the game and even to come back when NZ was leading 24-10. 2 drop goals, 2 penalties... he had put all the 1st 22 points of France... at 24-22 for NZ, all was possible for france but once again, Lamaison did the kicks which leaded to Dominici and Dourthe tries, milimetered kicks, what a vision of the game. Lamaison was a pure gem as 10. He did lead Brive club to european title and permitted France to arrive in final 1999. I do not understand why Lamaison is so clearly underrated. The best french N° 10 of the last 30 years, far better and more constant than Michalak IMHO. Let's hope that N'Tamack and Jalibert will be his successor :)

OMG! What on earth was my friend and I witnessing along with the sellout crowd? Quite possibly the most incredible turnaround by France to reach the World Cup final. L'essai de Dominic, et celui de Dourthe, c'est Lamaison par sa vision du jeu et deux coups de pied dosés et millimétrés qui permet ceux-ci. c'est clairement l'homme du match dans cette demie-finale. As a loyal All Blacks fan since 2003, These All Blacks 91, 95 & 99 RWC failures or choking performances really hurt LOMU legacy & the 1990’s ABs team legacy too, And the 1990’s ABs team was a talented team all round & they was great on paper but they can’t back it up in the 1990’s tho sadly 😞, And congrats 👏 to Australia 🇦🇺 for knocking us out in the 1991 RWC, to South Africa 🇿🇦 for knocking us in the 1995 RWC & to France 🇫🇷 for knocking out us in 1999 RWC, That why the best All Blacks team hands down is the 2010’s/2011-2015 team cause they go back to back & they are the only ones that do it so far, And also that 2010’s ABs team hold the number 1 ranking through those years until they lose in 2019 to Ireland 🇮🇪 or Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿 I think 🤔.

It is quite mad to see how much the rules of the game have evolved ! Back in those days you could get away with so much more (high tackles, furious rucks etc...) which made for a much more thugish kind of game and an overall more combative spectacle . Anyway , France played a near perfect game and spanked the All Blacks , now that is something . Allez les bleus

The real highlight of this game (beside French indiscipline suddenly turning into sheer class, and NZ's scrambly panic-mode) is Garbajosa's (15 blue) hilarious tackling technique : 1:00:54 dodging Lomu like a matador (meanwhile blocking his 14 and mindgaming his 9) ; then softly pushing Lomu on the back so that hopefully the bull will turn back towards him in amazement instead of scoring 1:27:33 cutely holding Umanga's hand after he's broken through => prevents a sure try I can't find again the 3d one I saw also 1:30:42 Lamaison kicking the ball away and then whirling around without giving two hoots about what happens to it Looking forward to watching more from these 2.

THE MATCH OF THE CENTURY ! When bookmakers give France at 26/1 versus NZ, the french defeat NZ with style and put the nose of the anglo-saxons bookmakers in them sh..eets.... The NZ player take the ball only 3 time when the french put 26 points in 30min.

some dodgy refereeing decisions in there, just before 70 minutes, never offside, the referee was behind the play turned round then he was offside, but not offside when the ball was thrown. Little key moments like that can swing the momentum massively one way or the other.

I think I've watched this game 10 or 15 times in the last 20 years, the same way I've seen some movies that I love many times. I nostalgia for this rugby, when the players really played rugby. When the 3/4 did not weigh 120 kg and they knew how to make passes, hooks and overflows. I am very often bored today watching a game. Rugby has become so boring.
