The Wales vs Italy call is the worst one for me - there's no debate to be had over it - the ref said 'yes you have time' and then ended the game. One of the worst decisions made by a professional referee of all time.

Tbf, it would have been a travesty if Wales had won that match. It was a few dodgy decisions that meant they were still in the game. The Mike Phillips try against Ireland was way worse than this because it resulted in a try. The Italy error only resulted in a lineout which, the way Wales were playing, they'd probably have ballsed it up anyway.

Neutral here. I agree with Jonathon Kaplan's view that Read should have penalised for taking Williams out in the air - Williams had taken the space and was going for the ball and Read had no realistic chance of getting there; nett result was a shoulder to the back of Williams who landed very awkwardly. There was nothing controversial about that decision, just an unsighted referee who blew on what he saw / thought he saw. It also materially affected the outcome of the game, it being the last play of said game, and had the correct decision been made (scrum Australia), the odds would have been heavily in favour of Scotland holding out to win. So I guess we'll have to agree to disagree?

@@MrSpleenboy World Rugby only ever come out with a statement when one of the Home Nations spits their dummy out, as Scotland did here. It was the *only* one of these incidents where they bothered to make a statement and even then, their statement was not just about an error by the referee, but confirmation that they had ' looked at every angle... something Joubert was not permitted to do under the TMO protocols' - that's paraphrased but you can get the official statement online and that is pretty much what it says. They were appeasing the Scottish mob while defending Joubert, simple as. While yes, I concede that the decision probably did decide the game, it was nothing more than a decision made by an unsighted referee, the same decision almost every referee in his position would have made. The TMO protocols were changed immediately after the tournament and they saved Poite from making a similar unsighted decision that would have cost the BI Lions the series if he had stuck to what he thought he had seen. Has it never occurred to you that both Joubert and Poite were unsighted, thought they saw a clear knock forward that was caught in front by a team mate and automatically called for a penalty?

Both of the above actions were, at the time, unprecedented. Ergo, the decision was, as it says in the title of the video, contentious Whether or not the referee was unsighted is irrelevant to the argument here. @@MrSpleenboy The decision was made substantially more controversial by the massive outcry from the Scottish fans, pundits and media, accusing Joubert of making a conscious effort to rob them of the game, an attitude that you yourself have just mirrored. He ran off the field at the end because he was ashamed of his poor decision - by the time the kick was taken, they had shown the replay so many times on the big screen that everyone in the stadium knew what had really happened. Controversial? Yeah sure. Higher on the list than most of the other things here? Not even close. As a neutral in that game, there was nothing more in it that than a bad decision by an unsighted referee, and if a bad decision by an unsighted referee is controversial, then every single game results in controversy. The only thing controversial about this one, and the Wayne Barnes' missing that marginally forward pass in '07, is the extent to which the fans reacted, with both referees being accused of match fixing. The issue here is consistency, during that world cup there had been two other similar tackles both 'worse' than Sam Warburton's in my opinion. These resulted, in one case, of the award of a penalty & in the other a penalty & a yellow card. Thus the sending off of the Wales captain was way out of proportion to that which had gone before, especially in a game of that importance. What players & fans alike want most of all is consistency in decision making, not the arbitrary knee jerk reactions that we have endured, & still endure today. I don't know if your vision is faulty but it seems to me that Warburton laid him flat on his back after the tackle & certainly not on his neck or head. The IRB are a blight on the game with their constant ill thought meddling with the games laws, presumably in an effort to justify their existence. This great game of ours flourishes despite the IRB & not because of them. Sorry to be so long winded but you know the Welsh, we're great talkers & I got carried away.

And then, REPLAYS from other angles are as rare as hens teeth. Strange advantage decisions long after the advantage seemed irrelevant as normal play had begun a flow. No! the minute possession switched; called back to play the advantage. No, i have seen now mos def, too many incorrect and suspicious decisions occurring with UEFA Champions league soccer, Premiership VAR decisions, Formula 1 motor racing, World cup Rugby and admittedly I have not really seen Cricket's rigging scenarios but too many players implicated in fixing and found guilty. One has to imagine WHO has the persuasive power on the day to influence a result. I imagine owners making bets with their extremely wealthy friends and negotiating a little of this and that. Talking to one another from their mega yachts with a bit of a chuckle. Next time, you win okay? Alright buddy(wink wink). We are so naive and gullible. Money is king. For sure.

Indeed. The ref clearly asked for clarification as to whether it was the original ball or not. The Wales-Italy one was dumb, the Welsh asked if there was time, the ref said they had 10 seconds, they then took 10 seconds to decide whether to go for it, before kicking it into touch only after 10 seconds had elapsed. I get that they asked the ref if there was time to do that but at the time they asked, there was, and by the time they kicked it, there wasn't. That 10 seconds decision-making time felt like an eternity watching the game, screaming at them to make their minds up before they ran out of time. And I think that particular game is a large part of why the kick to touch and lineout is considered one act and you can use a penalty in that manner after the clock goes red nowadays.
