Back in the days when the Wallabies was Australia's Team & Rugby Union was on par with their rival codes at times even eclipsing them with tv ratings even setting the crowd attendance record at Stadium Australia now ANZ has not been matched or broken from other codes 109,874 in Bledisloe 2000 what a game!!

I cannot believe this was the last time we won. I cracked out my hand -knitted # 5 jersey last night before the game. I had a good feeling and wanted to mark the occassion of having a Queensland Lock as Wallabies captain again. It was all good.

PROJECT DELTA Maybe not now, but in the golden years of the late 1990's early 2000's. These days the sport suffers terribly from a lack of 'grass roots' development unlike in NZ where they do things on this level perfectly, but the ARU just won't learn!

Aussies always go on about how they don't take Rugby seriously (after they lose to the AB's of course), but when the Wallabies are playing well, beating the All Blacks, & holding that Bledisloe, I don't think there's a more passionate Rugby crowd in the World. It was a sea of gold of 80,000 - 100,000+ people in those days & watching them all singing Waltzing Matilda before the game was one of the great spectacles in sport, coming from a Kiwi. Why? Oh, Why don't you do that anymore?

That's where Australian Rugby and the Wallabies have gone wrong since 2003. Super rugby was a much better comp when it was Super 12, top 4 finals format, 3 Australian teams where the brumbies and Reds had the majority of the Wallaby players therefore a cohesive unit at test level. Next thing Super Rugby get expanded with the likes of the Force and Rebels and slowly but surely Australia suffered as the years tick by. 21 years later, the Bledisloe yet to be seen on Australian shores. That pretty much tells the story..

Yes you can carry the ball as long as you like, as far as you can, but must pass it back behind you, or laterally to other players, left or right. If the ball does not travel backwards, or laterally in a pass to another player, its called a forward pass, results in a scrum ( contest between the forward players to restart the game.) The team that won the penalty 'feeds' the ball into the middle of the scrum from the side of it. A try is 5 pts and done by grounding the ball in the in-goal area, or

Also, you score a Try if you slide with enough momentum across the line, from outside the in-goal area. Either way, its still only 5 pts for the Try. But after you get a Try, you are given a chance to kick the ball through the top half of the H-shape goal gaining another 2 pts if successful (called the Conversion) This kick taken from a position dictated by where you grounded the ball for a Try

Wallabies i have to admit were a far better side in 2000 and 2001 than the ABs.Wayne Smith just had no idea as head coach. Set peices frpm the ABs were just awful.Oliver was the worst lineout thrower ive ever seen wear an AB jersey.Lineout in general was dysfunctional. Tony Brown just played way too many games for the ABs while Carlos Spensor a far superior player couldnt get a look in .Blackadder and Thorne had privlidged lives under Wayne Smith .They were never AB quality.

Amazing as well the ABs spent the last 15 mins trapped in their own half and conceded two tries. It wax masterful , the Wallabies forced the ABs to clear from their own 22 multiple times . BUT the ABs losing their own line out with 2mins to go on the half way line via another terrible Oliver throw contributed heavily.

As a Kiwi i have to admit looking back the Aussies really had our measure between 98 and 2003. Didnt help that NZ had some weired coaches in Hart and Wayne Smith and Mitchell. Wayne we know now is more assistant than head coach. Deans was the real coach rather than Mitchell. Deans made some awful decisions. Dropping Cullen and Merts . I never rated Hart. Should have been sacked after 98 !!
