    Good vid. But you missed out the bit in in the 'main roles' where props have to be the best looking and most intelligent players on the pitch. It's a weighty responsibility but we have to do it. 'Devastating' would be the word I'd use. Also, props are allowed to eat tasty snacks at any point including the opposition scrum half. In fact, props are so amazing that the scrum was invented to slow down props in case they decide to take over the world because they're just that good.

    I’d love ke to know if there are any differences in how the tighthead and loosehead props operate in the scrum both in defending and attacking the ball put in.

  • @couchrugby

    I like to think of the tight-head as the prop that ankers the scrum. Because of the way the front rows interlock with their opponents when they bind on engagement the tight-head prop is at a disadvantage to the loosehead prop they are pushing against. The loosehead is essentially being helped by the hooker and the tight head is not. So the tight-head ankers the scrum and defends this pressure, while the loosehead attacks the opponents scrum and tries to take advantage of the power dominance.

    question from a beginner: is tight head prop always on right side? or is scrum interlocking orientation dependent on something else?

  • @couchrugby

    @couchrugby

    Good question 😄. Yes the tight head prop is always on the right hand side. I suspect it is safer to have that constant and for everyone envolved in the scrum to have that familiarity and consistency. The scrum has a natural tendency to rotate clockwise due to the way the front rowers have to interlock with their opponents. If you swap the tighthead and loose head around that rotation will switch along with them. I use to play lock and I would have hated to have to deal with that variable.

    In my day 10 was known as the stand off. We had a centre on each side alongside the wingers. I was a winger and my centre was Alan Finch. Don't understand the thinking behind having both centers on one side, leaving the other side exposed leaving the full back to fill in the gap.

    Hi David. That's interesting, I love to hear all the different names positions have and have had in different places and times. Its funny that it always the halves that have different names more often.

    another question: is it legal for backs to be in the scrum? are all positions interchangable?

  • @leonardmcdougall8477

    @leonardmcdougall8477

    technically as long as you have the right numbers, even backs can be in the scrum. But forwards specialise in it.

  • @couchrugby

    @couchrugby

    Жыл бұрын

    Yes as Leonard has pointed out, anyone can join a scrum except for in the front row though. the front is a specialist position and you can't just have anyone scrum there for safety purposes. it has to be done by a specialist. That is why teams have to have all three front row positions covered on the substitutions bench. If there are no front rowers left scrums will become uncontested.

    I play prop when my team is smaller (I'm just a bit taller and bigger than the average) and Fly-Half if/when my team is big buff men. Is this viable, or should I stick to one?

  • @ozmanoshe

    @ozmanoshe

    Depends on the level you play at. It's not viable at higher levels but if it's a social club have at it. Its whatever gives you the most enjoyment and contributes to the team.
