Please include me in any future Rufus Wainwright fan club activity. I believe that Rufus Wainwright is the finest vocalist, male or female, who has ever lived. I've thought this since I saw him in a commercial for the GAP in 1998. I'm a quiet middle-aged married woman who lives in the New York area. I would love to commune with other fans so put me on your mailing-lists, please. Call or text to (908)-656-5635.

Rufus is simply amazing. I've been a fan since the late 90s. My daughter & I loved his music & live concerts. We saw him live 3 times at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas. Yeah, the same Lawrence KS that "doesn't matter at all" in his "You Ain't Big" song on his new album, "Unfollow the Rules". He sure did fool us into thinking we mattered. He played a 45 min solo encore at the first concert. He put all of himself into that performance. He had us as his most devoted fans after that. I saw him outside at a concert in Kansas City in 2006. It was raining, which didn't bother Rufus at all, nor I as the raindrops hid my tears falling throughout each song that my daughter would never hear. She passed away at 28 a year earlier.

Saw Rufus sitting at a restaurant cafe last week in LA where I live. I wanted so badly to just stop and say hello and thank him for the amazing music he has put out into the world and to tell him what a big fan I am, but it just seemed like a cliche thing to do so I passed and let him enjoy his time off. I hope he knows that if accolades and respect and absolute pure talent equated to dollars he’d be the wealthiest artist alive.

Rufus story is repeated over & over again. A product of his environment/ upbringing. I'm truly glad he survived. My wife & I have three DEAR gay friends that are like Rufus etc.Its living in this world that is becoming more difficult to cope with every day issues. My friends have a very contrtolled environment. It's essential to thier well being. All three are successful & content with what they have. None of them have a partner etc. Because of thier inability to maintain a long standing relationship. They view my wife & I as dear friends that they can trust. They are very intelligent & have a beautiful intelectual sense of humor. They have a deep love for animals are very gifted in many ways. They truly value our friendships as something permanent. Rufus hopefully will survive by being an great ARTIST. Love to all of you my friends. And always be kind to one another & surround yourselves with GIVERS & NOT TAKERS. Arnold Bourbon Amaral 💙🌏🌍🌎💁👱👨🎼🎻🎹🙏📖

So he said to his record company "I'm gay and I'm not changing this." Good man :-) He is a strong individual. He fully recognises that you must put your Mental Health ahead of Making Money and being Popular. And this, regardless of your sexuality, race, gender or mental health status. I hope this man continues to be theraputic for me :-)

It's rare to find a musician who allows the music to define who he is. So he chases the music, never forcing the music but simply trying to be in the right place at the right time, being a vessel for it to come through. Rare.

It always seemed to me that music flows out of him without any barriers. His vocals are sensual like a stream rolling over your bare feet- constant and cool. He opens his mouth and it just comes out free and unfettered. Saw him in the UK in Oxford in a rather broken down 17th century theatre. He was astounding and utterly fabulous.

When I was a child, one summer, my mother decided to raise a flock of banty chickens. My brother named the dominant male among them, Rufus. He was colorful-and his feathers were shiny. He dominated the yard that summer. When I hear the name Rufus, I cannot but think of that. When I was in college, once, at the end of a long day of classes, we forced our schoolmate to write down, from memory, the lyrics to "Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road" so that we could sing it at a party later. It is written and performed by Louden Wainwright III-I would not have written "Dinner at Eight," a brilliant, experiential, ballad: Conciliator that I am, I would have said simply, "I love you."

I just don't understand... Why do guys have to proclaim their 'straightness' before then expressing their admiration for Rufus, or other 'out' gay people? It's like when guys, and I've heard this a million times in my life, say things like, "I don't notice things like that", when asked if they ever notice that another guy is cute, handsome, good looking, et cetera. Anyone who can 'notice' a beautiful sunset, flower, house, car, et cetera, 'notices' when another person, male or female, is attractive. It's just so disingenuous! Simply because you notice that someone is beautiful/attractive doesn't mean you want to f**k them; it means you're human.

  • @inkyguy

Masculinity for most males is a very rigid and therefore a brittle thing. It is disingenuous. Overcompensating and defensive reactions are clear evidence of that. Sexual insecurity causes males to be super vigilant about not doing anything that could be perceived of as feminine, which is sadly both ridiculous and a self-created trap.

It could be that you're simply noticing those while dozens of comments.... "incredible" and "breathtaking talent" abound. Those could very easily be from the straight guys (hey there) who begin typing with no need to proclaim a thing. Doesn't even cross my mind. I'm a barehanded, street drummer from nyc who bashed and banged his entire life out and some would say as masculine as they come. I fucking LOVE Rufus with a passion and if "Goin to A Town" comes on... forget it... I'm an absolute, life contemplating mess.

Yes! Also, if you look in the comments of any interview with “out” artists like Rufus, they’re flooded with men complaining about their sexuality being mentioned - “I don’t see why they have to talk about him being gay!” “Why do they always talk about his boyfriend, it doesn’t matter!” Etc etc. And obviously gay people are just normal people (I am one, I would know lol) but the fact that we’re gay IS a part of our lives. Talking about being gay, about our partners, our experiences isn’t obsessing over sexuality, it’s just talking about our lives. If you’re not uncomfortable with a particular artists being gay/bi/whatever then why do you dislike when it’s mentioned??! Anyway, Idk if this makes sense but it’s just something that I’ve noticed, particularly in men who have to say “I’m straight BUT...”

I became a fan after I heard “April Fools”... so, quite early. I didn’t know he was gay for the longest time. I didn’t make the connection with that aspect of his lyrics. I can see it very clearly now, but not until someone pointed it out to me. His album “Poses” was a very personal album for me at the time and I related very heavily to it. When I found out he was gay, certain lyrics sort of changed meaning for me... but I still relate to his lyrics to this day, and I’m still not gay. 😁

Or might it be that you’re looking for this stuff and bitching about it? It’s terribly dull. Just enjoy the music and forget your uptight homosexuality. Many of these comments sound like they’ve come from people so anally retentive they can’t sit down for fear of sucking up the furniture.

Anyone who loves the music of Rufus Wainwright should also love the music of Brian Wilson, Laura Nyro, Todd Rundgren, Judee Sill and - a little nearer to our own time - Neil Hannon and Rumer.
