Besides the law
What people don't seem to realise, apart from any effect water may have on the car's electrics, is where is the engine air intake? In most cases it is positioned right at the front of the car to get cool air to achieve good fuel economy. If the water rises to the top of the bonnet line it is almost bound to be sucked in by the engine with expensive results.

i have a strange feeling about spectators... They kinda know that expensive repair is about to happen, but prefer to stay quiet. And at the same time they propably wonder why the signs warn about Fords. And only Fords and not also VW, BMWs, Peugots, etc. ... Although it is a very good example of people not thinking anymore. I am not faulting them (entirely), as so many things are regulated and made "safe". Most people will never ever confront a ford in their live. And here we see those people being confronted with something completly new. So my positive takeaway is: All these people with now ruined cars and a bill of maybe several monthly salaries will have learned something and never cross a ford that careless again.
Some people don't deserve an R32 :(

ok water passage: Couple of rules: 1) don't worry about the depth of the water and whether your care can actually handle it. We do that for the clicks... 2) the faster you go, the more splash and instagram-credit do you get... ignore the fact that all accessories on your car will just fall off after you hit that water-hard-as-concrete-wall with 40+ mph.

Not sure about the advice at the end. I was taught if you have to drive into water. Select a gear that will see you through to exiting the water. Then enter the water, never stop if possible. If water gets between friction surfaces of clutch you can be in trouble from that alone. So no stopping, no clutch work. Enter the water and keep your Revesby up to keep pressure on the exhaust system preventing water ingress. Keep an even speed and ride behind the bow wave created by your car, the water will be slightly shallower behind. Worst thing you can do is enter the water and stop.
@JTV84
Жыл бұрын
i disagree on the last part. he did exactly that, and got across without any damage to his car. the worst thing you can do is go in too fast, create a massive bow wave that fills your engine bay and hydrolocks the engine, bending or breaking rods or even the block.

Not too bold if your air intake isn't scraping just above the ground and you aren't gunning through the water to lessen your chances to not get water into your air intake while shorting your electronics.
I don't know how it is considered in GB, but in Austria/Germany there is some kind of, I'd call it, "SUV-hate" going on... But at least it seems the SUV's and bigger cars with more ground clearance have an advantage here.

There should be a new competition, slowly increase the water level and see which driver can get through unscathed. The default car needs to be a ford.
My Mk 2 Cortina would stall out in a drizzle unless I treated it to precautionary squirt of WD40 but the designers at least put the intake on the top of the block. You would have been floating before the water got sucked into the motor. Nowadays 3 inches of water and it's bent con rods and trashed electronics all round. Still that's progress for you.
