    Wow that's an awesome tag to draw! Wow man, rainy lake.. that whole area is obviously super beautiful and rugged. There's lots of people there all the way into October to see the Tamarack trees change color but sounds like you'll be there after they leave mostly. As far as trails.. do you have to stay north of hwy 20 (kind of) to avoid being in the National Park? There's so many trails out that way it'd be hard to even know where to start. I imagine, during your hunt, if you just follow the snow line you're bound to run into somethin!

    Heck yeah it is! Like most animals (and fish haha) grouse are most active in morning in evening but I hunt them all day. In fact, the grouse in this very video was shot a bit after noon. Thanks for the videos! Informative for me as a gear up to become a hunter over the next year or so. What calibre/gauge shotgun do you find to be best-suited for grouse hunting of this type? I have some friends saying .410 is best, and other saying 20-gauge is best. Your views?

  • @CascadeBackcountry

    @CascadeBackcountry

    Жыл бұрын

    Heck yeah man! I personally use a CZ Upland Ultralight 20 gauge over-under. Really any shotgun has the power to knock down a grouse. What differentiates them is the amount of shot each will hold. A .410 shell might hold say 50 pellets of #7 shot where a 12 gauge might hold 300. So the 12 gauge will have a bigger spread... aka easier to hit stuff like a grouse. Honestly I think a lightweight 20 gauge is about perfect. Hope that helped and/or made sense haha

    Went out this weekend, and flushed more while driving than when I was on foot. What’s the best way to keep them from going deeper into the woods? Stop there and get out and walk closer? Drive up to where you saw them go in and get out? Keep driving passed them, get out and come back? No difference any way?

  • @CascadeBackcountry

    @CascadeBackcountry

    Жыл бұрын

    You'll almost always flush more driving than on foot because you can cover way more ground in a car. You have several options... if you see one in the road, get out n try to shoot it. If you flush it into the woods, go after it. Or you can drive right by it then stop and try to shoot it. They will all result in either a bird in the hand or a bird into the woods. I can give you this advice... usually when they flush into the woods, they just fly into a tree, so keep your eyes peeled and can probably pick one off a branch!

If you could only have three (maybe four) of those important grousey things, what would they be and in what rank? we're hunting here in Huron national Forest in Michigan and can't seem to get all of them in combination. curious what your thoughts are when you have a limited number of those perfect conditions. cheers, Kevin and Karl PS. How does the wind affect grouse?

  • @CascadeBackcountry

    @CascadeBackcountry

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks! That's a loaded question haha Grouse are nuts and there are definitely spots where I get that grousey feeling but honestly I find them in all types of conditions. True story.. just 3 days ago I passed 2 grouse just hanging out in the MIDDLE of a busy highway. WTF! So I essentially never total disregard any spot, however!! there is one type of spot I find to be the grousiest. And that is the creek draw.. lemme explain. If I'm walking an old logging road and I find a bend in the road (into the hillside) with a gully with a creek in it, that's gold. The creek provides water for the grouse, cool damp air and water for ground food sources to grow and the creek gully provides a quick escape route if the grouse wants to fly off real quick. But if you forced me to pick 3 things... it'd be roadside cover so the grouse feel safe feeding there, a food source and water. Good luck out there guys!

  • @CascadeBackcountry

    You can grouse hunt on DNR and Forest land. A good resource would be OnX maps as it can include property lines and types of land you're on. I don’t know anything about hunting but I have some questions I was curious about: 1. How do you know what’s legal to hunt and what’s not legal? 2. For much larger animals (deer or bear) are they still hunted for food, or just for fur etc? I feel like my stomach can easily handle fishing or grouse hunting, but a larger animal might make me too emotional. Like I said, not a Hunter but I’m curious. Thanks

    Let me see if I can muddle up this answer haha 1. Most DNR or Forest Service roads are public land and you're allowed to hunt and probably the majority of old logging roads fall under these. You can also use an app like OnX that will show what is public and what is private. 2. I would say the majority of larger animals harvested animals like bear/deer/elk are harvest for meat but of course some people just do it for sport. Lots of people do it for both meat and sport! I feel ya on emotional thing. Taking a life is a serious matter!

    @@CascadeBackcountry Thanks for the response. I just bought a 28 gauge side by side for grouse. Did I make a mistake?

    Of course! Hell no ya didn't! I was this close to pulling the trigger on a 28 gauge (sorry I had to say that haha) I fully intend to purchase a 28 gauge sooner than later. The only difference between a 28, 20 and 12 is that with the 28 you have to be a slightly better shot. Great purchase! Hope ya get into some birds!

    @@CascadeBackcountry Oh good. Whew! I have been using a Savage over under with 22 on top and 410 below. I always used the 410 with a good success. But I just wanted a side by side before I croak! 😂

    If you're getting grouse with a 410 you'll surely be fine with a 28 gauge! Side by sides are awesome. I would also like to use one before I croak

    I've seen so many birds this year so far, and I've never tried grousing. It can't possibly be this easy can it? I mean you can just walk right up on them, they're dumber than a buck in rut

  • @CascadeBackcountry

    Not gonna lie... they're pretty dumb! Haha They're tricky to hunt tho cuz they're extremely camouflage, fast and dissappear into impossibly thick brush. It's a lot of walking miles for a few seconds of extreme excitement
