Rudy Ernst presents... Dada Action Painting at the QCC Art Gallery
Rudy Ernst: Action Painting at the QCC Art Gallery of April 21, 2009
Life is too short to worry about Wall Street's financial derivatives in the amount of "Four hundred eighty-five trillion seven hundred forty-eight billion two hundred ninety-six million four hundred seventy-eight thousand three hundred twenty-eight dollars and seventy-eight cents."
Rudy Ernst has declared himself a happy Dadaist-Philosopher who paints and writes rather from the guts than from the brain.
This film shows highlights of how the artist is painting a 110-foot canvas in less than forty minutes, being driven entirely by the spur of the moment. Ernst (who carries a Ph.D. in economics) finally adds the absurd (but real) above-mentioned dollar amount to show how dadaesque (nonsensical) our economy has become.

Let's continue the spirit of Dada. There are still great lessons to be experienced through nonsense and structure in this art form. However I believe that we should do so in larger shirts.

And by this I mean that Dada needs a youthful revitalization. I am not saying that you cannot be old and associated with Dada, or that being old is bad. Ernst does appear peppy and energetic. I'm saying that Dada does not only live in the past or with old masters. So let's apply Dada ideals to the work we do now but in tuxedos. This way we are always already professional.

Hi Lionel: It’s been 3 years since you posted your comment on the old man’s action about our Dada-Economy (The worldwide derivatives market is now over 900 Trillion - check it out). Surprisingly, I have just had more than 408,000 hits on that Video. For your info: A few years ago, I wrote the “Story of Dada”. It’s on Amazon and you might like it. Dada had a certain absurdity to it that's pretty prevalent in youth humor/culture. We don't call it Dada, but they're both pretty similar.

Yea, and it's my little brother's - but the champagne is mine
BTW, am I really the only one who can actually see structure in this chaos? Is everyone else THAT unimaginative?

I loved it
polyester is an odd choice of attire. but he can kick and he can stretch and he can kick. i can appreciate this. its beautiful in the way that he is so free in that moment. present. and likely he smells bad at the end. cuz polyester isn't breathable fabric. and its really distracting to see it on him moving around as fast as he is. but i can dig it.
"The idea is more important that the work itself" This is one of the things that I've learned about Dadaism. :)
cute, he seems to really enjoy his art. i teaches art history and till this day every student of mine are still bananaaa with the fact that this is one of an art movement, add in the fluxes group, the happenings, abstract expressionism and etc etc etc.. you just gotta clear ur mind when u r learning this kind of art, otherwise u will always stuck in comparison with all the formal way of art making.

Hi? Can you teach me how to do a dada painting?
Beautiful work, very beautiful, beautiful painting !!! Congratulations...
That's a lot of money in canvass and paint...that could set me back for like 2 years right there.

... and that is exactly the right mindset that will take your painting a step further...
Great! Such fun and also inspiring! Has given me inspiration for my Wild Women of Arkaroola workshop! Keep going Rudy!
It is very difficult to stop yourself searching for recognisable images, but the point of action painting techniques is to avoid the continuous need of intelligence to suppress of an inner primal view of what we see. You can't sense this primal view through your controlled way of looking because our intelligence evolved to overpower it. To get any hint of it you have to just let go and act by intuition.
Wonderful stuff Rudy.......giving all of us a lesson in how to loosen up in more ways than one!!! To see something like this done oudoors in a town square would be quite a crowd puller.
While most people here criticize the art, they aren't seeing the freedom he has in his work and his ability to create so energetically....at 70 when this was filmed, freedom is what I see. Especially with a shirt that says F%$@ you all, I'm me.
Thanks for sharing this -- the artist's style is pure and fun to watch!
I lost it when he rode the bike out XD
I love this.. If everyone were so free - the world would be a better place. I have spent my life doing things I don't want to do just to make ends meet.. when really, all I want to do is paint and draw and create..... Leave your inheratence to me so that I too can spend my golden years.. being golden. I love it.. you go man.. you go...
Now this is some fine abstraction. Just beautiful. But....the ultimate abstraction is.....FIRE! So let us take this masterpiece outside and apply just a small touch of fire and stand back. That is what I would call the spur of the moment.
That shirt is a masterpiece.
Wow!!! Rudy, I love your attitude, your painting, your energy!! All good!!
The more I see this video the more I appreciate Rudy Ernst´s art.
Beautiful!
Art is not just what you create with your hands, but what you can inspire with your heart and mind
really interesting work.
I really like this painting Mr.Ernst.
great work!
I know he's serious...but let's not pretend he's a Picasso or Matisse...but I give him great credit for pursing his urges...thanks
Great work of art! I Really like it!
this is really great! Kudos to Ernst for having the spirit to create. PS: criticisers - - there is no such thing as good vs. bad art. If you appreciate a piece, then it is beautiful art to you. There is alot of crap out there that people are willing to pay millions for. I don't think it is anything less than crap, but galleries call them art. On the other hand, I like this guys work - therefore, it's art.
The mound with his head was quite good, deserves a thumbs up!
Awesome work
Now that is what I call a big, big, gigantic coloring book. I like the art.
excellent work...!
DÁ-SE, A PRIMEIRA IMPRESSÃO QUE NÃO EXISTE SENTIDO NOS TRAÇOS. LOGO EM SEGUIDA DESCUBRO QUE ESTOU REDONDAMENTE ENGANADO. GRANDE HABILIDADE E POESIA EM SEUS TRAÇOS. PERFEITO!
Amazing!
Super awesome!
beautiful preformance !!!
You just made laugh so damn hard, thank you.
Dada art questions art itself. So this man is doing it right. One of the best pieces is "Fountain", and that is a urinal tipped on its side! Dada art is amazing.
sometime i don't get it with ppl who are have lots of Negative vibe and laugh at him because of his Art.. Dadaism is the movement in art and really focus on the idea development and the progress. As an Artist, i cannot blame them (the negative ppl) who don't understand this. because Art is Universal.. in the end, Everybody have the right to say anything they want. But still have an option to live in stupidity or to gain knowledge. That All.
amazing!!!!!
¡Oh qué gran obra! Bato pesado, presumido, personalista y ególatra...
someone told him that red polo neck skivy was cool in 1969 and hes been wearing it ever since!

yep, I agree. Action painting began and ended with Jackson Pollock. All other efforts since have been only aftershocks of aesthetic learning and or lust for the action experience.
what paper did he use ? please (very important)
Thank You for sharing. Some of the comments are obviously not from artists. Art comes in all forms. This is his art. Well i guess its opinions. Like assholes, we all have one.
Rudy is very fit and moves rapidly across that white. He is having fun. The end result - for me at least - was a festive space with figures in carnival attire. But as this was Dada, the performance should have been the thing. There needed to be some joyful people dancing about while Rudy painted, in my view. Happenings and Dada performances were always a crowd thing. Not just suits with cameras. Rudy was wasted on them. The shrunken clothing was funny - and the majority of commenters could not get past it; but Rudy is a great deal fitter and slimmer than most people in America, young and old.
gran expresion de madures artistica por fin lo consiguio
I am critical of artist who don't wear socks. Nice process in design.
At the beginning it seems like an automatic drawing, I mean painting. Except the time when he draw that eye. I also do this kind of art, so I can feel the beauty.
wow really so great sir
Rocking on the free world for sure...
This guy is full of life. Love him.
💎Perfect !!!💎
Reflection and meditation !!!
FANTASTICO GRANDE MAESTRO ASSUNTA
right on point!
does anyone knows what is he using as brush in the action ? or oil pencil ? thank you

Acrylics and sponge I think
... On second thought that last minute confirmed my suspicion, but I'm happy he is having a good time in his old age which most the elderly don't do.
Didn't really see an action, in the sense of quick hand movement in this piece. I feel with action painting you can truly sense the artists felxing and propulsion of paint, can't really get that in the linear composition outline here. I can dig the dada-ish liquor drankin and bike exit though, that was pretty on. I just don't know if the tenets of dadaism and action painting can be reconciled and hybridized into a single piece
WOW!! Fantastic! Genious! The PRO-SECCO ART!
love it...

Quanto si è divertito .....e quanto mi ha divertito ...questo è il senso di un action painting!
Reminds me of "Sprockets". "Let us dance."
Was that shirt in the dryer too long?
Pretty cool. Wish I had a studio that size. I wonder if his outfit is also Dada???
To make an art you dont have to be weird on purpose. Stop watching TV - artists.

LMAO who's grand dad is this? love the spontaneity of it all.
Well done, l did one of Vokas Marilyn's today, who cares if your learning.
this is great
i totally agree. thats the whole point of the 'action painting'! not the final piece at the end which you see on the wall, but what entails within the video :} i think its great tbh x
Art IS Freedom.
Looks fun.
Never mind his shirt. He's an artist. If only I could do a fraction of what he can do in the world of art and philosophy.
Weird intro, loved the art

Hello, van you give the musical tracks please ???? ThX
So, where's this painting now?
0:56 I'm drunk and now I'm going to grope the canvas/medium lol this guy
i like it. it has a playful carefree nature.
Mein Vorbild!
sexy as anything, I'm all Carmen Electra'd out by the turtleneck action, Rudy, I'm not normally attracted to artists, but... call me (Rudy, Sir, I'm sure you'll know this is just a joke - but the internet is full of weirdos, so this is my disclaimer, just wanted to add my respect and admiration in a comedic way - big love my brother Man) best wishes BMcF
The shirt was distracting, however, I really like this work. Would love to have seen it in real life.
He’s having a lot of fun
Hot Topic is not punk rock but Rudy Ernst certainly is.
Dammit i got pranked.......................
Yeah, sure, if those guys can be our bankers, this guy can be an artist, why not?
So he wears shirt that's too small, paint with "freedom", drinks, rides a bicycle, do a flip, ... hmmm...theatrical? What artists need to do these days!!
adorable freedom!!!
this grown ass man has the energy of a 12 year old...
that shirt is a perfect fit..
Yes Mr.
this isn't Dada i think. there is plenty of visual harmony in his painting ( the unity of curves, the distribution of colors).
05:26 that guitar piece is much better than the painting.
ESTO NO ES ACTION PAINTING! ESTO ES ART BRUT!
I respect people with talent. This is something everybody can do. I respect many artists on KZread. He is just NOT one of them. I DO respect your appinion. even though i do not share it. And your 50% true,,, Nature paintings are made for the profit. But my model/nude and character creations are for fun. Don't wanna sell them. Can't,,, But if its made for a client. I have to. Good luck to you 2.
Well... It IS Dada.
Somebody needs to start paying him for his artwork. He needs a new shirt.
