Rudy Ernst presents... Dada Action Painting at the QCC Art Gallery

Rudy Ernst: Action Painting at the QCC Art Gallery of April 21, 2009
Life is too short to worry about Wall Street's financial derivatives in the amount of "Four hundred eighty-five trillion seven hundred forty-eight billion two hundred ninety-six million four hundred seventy-eight thousand three hundred twenty-eight dollars and seventy-eight cents."
Rudy Ernst has declared himself a happy Dadaist-Philosopher who paints and writes rather from the guts than from the brain.
This film shows highlights of how the artist is painting a 110-foot canvas in less than forty minutes, being driven entirely by the spur of the moment. Ernst (who carries a Ph.D. in economics) finally adds the absurd (but real) above-mentioned dollar amount to show how dadaesque (nonsensical) our economy has become.

Let's continue the spirit of Dada. There are still great lessons to be experienced through nonsense and structure in this art form. However I believe that we should do so in larger shirts.

And by this I mean that Dada needs a youthful revitalization. I am not saying that you cannot be old and associated with Dada, or that being old is bad. Ernst does appear peppy and energetic. I'm saying that Dada does not only live in the past or with old masters. So let's apply Dada ideals to the work we do now but in tuxedos. This way we are always already professional.

Hi Lionel: It’s been 3 years since you posted your comment on the old man’s action about our Dada-Economy (The worldwide derivatives market is now over 900 Trillion - check it out). Surprisingly, I have just had more than 408,000 hits on that Video. For your info: A few years ago, I wrote the “Story of Dada”. It’s on Amazon and you might like it. Dada had a certain absurdity to it that's pretty prevalent in youth humor/culture. We don't call it Dada, but they're both pretty similar.

polyester is an odd choice of attire. but he can kick and he can stretch and he can kick. i can appreciate this. its beautiful in the way that he is so free in that moment. present. and likely he smells bad at the end. cuz polyester isn't breathable fabric. and its really distracting to see it on him moving around as fast as he is. but i can dig it.

It is very difficult to stop yourself searching for recognisable images, but the point of action painting techniques is to avoid the continuous need of intelligence to suppress of an inner primal view of what we see. You can't sense this primal view through your controlled way of looking because our intelligence evolved to overpower it. To get any hint of it you have to just let go and act by intuition.

While most people here criticize the art, they aren't seeing the freedom he has in his work and his ability to create so energetically....at 70 when this was filmed, freedom is what I see. Especially with a shirt that says F%$@ you all, I'm me.

this is really great! Kudos to Ernst for having the spirit to create. PS: criticisers - - there is no such thing as good vs. bad art. If you appreciate a piece, then it is beautiful art to you. There is alot of crap out there that people are willing to pay millions for. I don't think it is anything less than crap, but galleries call them art. On the other hand, I like this guys work - therefore, it's art.

sometime i don't get it with ppl who are have lots of Negative vibe and laugh at him because of his Art.. Dadaism is the movement in art and really focus on the idea development and the progress. As an Artist, i cannot blame them (the negative ppl) who don't understand this. because Art is Universal.. in the end, Everybody have the right to say anything they want. But still have an option to live in stupidity or to gain knowledge. That All.

Rudy is very fit and moves rapidly across that white. He is having fun. The end result - for me at least - was a festive space with figures in carnival attire. But as this was Dada, the performance should have been the thing. There needed to be some joyful people dancing about while Rudy painted, in my view. Happenings and Dada performances were always a crowd thing. Not just suits with cameras. Rudy was wasted on them. The shrunken clothing was funny - and the majority of commenters could not get past it; but Rudy is a great deal fitter and slimmer than most people in America, young and old.

Didn't really see an action, in the sense of quick hand movement in this piece. I feel with action painting you can truly sense the artists felxing and propulsion of paint, can't really get that in the linear composition outline here. I can dig the dada-ish liquor drankin and bike exit though, that was pretty on. I just don't know if the tenets of dadaism and action painting can be reconciled and hybridized into a single piece
