Rudolph Valentino 1921 Tango

Rudolph Valentino (one of the first Hollywood stars) dancing tango here in the silent film of 1921, THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE. It is the first video filmed of anybody dancing tango (the tango was born in Buenos Aires around 1890). This scene is one of the most famous moments in the history of silent movies. Beatrice Domínguez (born in 1896 in California of Spanish parents) was the actress who dances here. In 1921, at the age of 24, and before the film was completed, Beatrice died from a ruptured appendix. Rudolph Valentino also died of a similar ailment, five years later, at the age of 31 years.

Who knows what music they were really dancing to, but the 3 tangos I inserted in this copy of the movie were all recorded by the orchestra of Francisco Canaro many years after the movie was produced and I obviously adjusted the speed of the movie in certain spots to match the dancing with the music. Enjoy!

According to Natasha Rambova, he was actually a gentle, rather passive man who lived by 'il metodo;' the Italian bourgeois belief in regularity and predictable daily routine. He worked, he came home, read the paper, went to bed. His grueling routine at work left him time for little else. Its a.little sad that a man who worked so hard for success got to enjoy very little of it.

@@madamvaudelune3298 the style is purely personal and complex. Valentino has done a lot on his own and a lot has been added by the magic circle. Surely he worked very hard to be who he was.

He married the wrong sort of girl :) she was an actress involved with a few other women and she rapidly needed a husband to clear her reputation. they separated soon after. As time passed he was close to many lesbians and gays. Biographers agree he probably loved women. He confided to Louella Parsons that the only women he love didn’t love him, and the rest didn’t matter. ..

(I spent many many hours as a child putting on my parents’ records & attempting to imitate the dancing I’d seen. Luckily our dog was a willing accomplice & would come & dance with me. Thanks for reminding me where my love of all things music & dance started.

I remember seeing photos of Valentino as The Sheik and a very short clip of Valentino playing The Son of the Sheik - from the books by Edith Hull - when I was at school. He will always epitomise ''The Sheik'' to me, whether it was the father or the son [and I read both books as a teenager]. Not sure if it is just me but somehow the film stars of yesteryear are far far better looking [and that is without modern make-up and cinematic trickery] than they are today, and not just Valentino either.

Another dance number ruined by the constant cutting away. Makes you understand the true revolution in filmed dance instituted by Fred Astaire, who had it in his contract that all of his musical numbers would be filmed in long shot without cuts, from beginning to end. Not only were there no intrusions from reaction shots or comedy relief, but the full bodies of the dancers were always visible. Every step, every graceful gesture, every bend, every sway, there to enjoy forever. Nothing lost. Thank you, Mr. Astaire! 🕺💃

Valentino was an old world gentleman with elegance, style, and beautiful manners. He was often overwhelmed by the adulation, and baffled by the frenzy he created. But when you look at him onscreen there is real magnetism, and erotic energy.
