Rucksack info. ALICE pack, Spec ops recon ruck, Lightweight tropical rucksack

I forgot to mention the separate hip pad at the top of the couch. It was another brand that ended up not being as good at the Tactical Taylor version, but I wanted to show that there are other options to improve the ALICE system.
Another thing about 1000 denier nylon that I don’t like is how the fabric makes annoying sounds as it roughs up against the metal frames. As a result I need to wrap the frame with para cord where it contacts the pack and it eliminates the sound.
I must point out that I'm in my later 30's and not the human superman I used to be in my 20's. Weight is now more important to me than before which is why I emphasized so much on it.
To all tactical people out there. I see pics and vids of guys in the field with their hip pads clipped behind their packs with only using the shoulder straps. The reason I see them doing this to have better access to their gear and mags. If you still want to wear tactical gear/mags on your body while still using the hip pad, some sort of tactical panel would be the only solution I can recommend. A drop leg holster works with the hip pad as well.

I used the medium and large ALICE packs for over 15 years, then was issued the MOLLE ruck, larger, more comfortable, but it weighs much more. Now I use old large OD Green ALICE rucks with the newer camo straps and new kidney pad, and some mods, best durable set up with many places to add gear

The shoulder straps worked in conjunction with your lbe aka load bearing equipment. When wearing your lbe the straps didn't suck as bad. The kidney pad is just that, your ruck sets up high not on your waist where your lbe equipment is at. Hope this helps you out, put alot of miles on wearing this gear when I served in the 90s. Plus, duct tape is your friend.

LBT made a few versions of both Alice style packs and suspension. I have two, one is the Kit G with unified suspension. I do not remember the model codes for each but one has a removeable lid and also has a storm flap that stays on the pack when the lid is removed. LBT also made advanced versions of the old butt sack from the LBE/LBV gear.

You would think the malice frame would be authorized too right? The Alice frame is lighter though. I recall seeing a documentary about the airborn in Afghanistan. I saw a guy running around with a alice pack, frame and all. I was impressed how they have the best technology and gear available and still rucking the old alice.

Thanks! To answer your question. So the middle pack you see(the tropical rucksack by The hidden woodsman) is the best option in my opinion for a medium rucksack. As I mentioned, had the exterior pockets have through slots like the ALICE pack it would be even better. If I could further change it, I would move the the exterior pouches closer to each other and add either molle straps or ALICE straps on the sides so you could add additional pouches or lash hiking poles to them. The frame I say go with the ALICE frame for several reasons. First, although I know that the plastic 1606 frame is an excellent option, I feel that plastic will crack and break before the metal rivets on the ALICE frame will fail. Second, find yourself a new quality one, take care of it and it will last you forever. They're not as expensive as other frames too. Third, there are a lot of different hip pads and straps that can go with it depending on your liking. All though still expensive, I recommend Tactical Taylor for those items. I like how the hip pads from that company have molle on them to add additional pouches. Sadly the tropical rucksack is not currently being made by the Hidden woodsman. I have reached out to them saying what a great pack it is and to hopefully bring it back into production. At least they thanked me and acknowledged my input. Hopefully this was helpful to you.

The Issued ALICE is built from 420 Ballistic Nylon...more puncture resistant than 1000 denier Cordura nylon but less abrasion resistant...you cannot (or rather should not) compare the issued ALICE to the cheap and I do mean cheap, knock off's available today. I once owned the Recon Ruck and it is a good pack other than the way it attaches to the ALICE frame and is void of pass through pockets...same two design issues as the hidden woodsman. Purchase a genuine ALICE pack, genuine kidney pad, genuine shoulder straps mounted on a genuine ALICE frame and you will see a huge difference in quality. However, yo are correct that the shoulder straps by TT are far superior to what we were issued back in 74...atb...woods

Both of those hip pads are from Tactical Taylor. Not exactly sure what type they were called though. One thing that was odd is the tan version has three molle loops and the green one had four molle loops. This is due to one of them being longer with the padding (inches in length that is). I have a similar idea like you with having a canteen style pouch that holds my binoculars and the other pouch has my GPS and batteries.

The problem with the Alice pack Medium and Large is the inability to transfer the load to your hips; all the weight hangs off your shoulders.

  • @thescharfchannel

Technically yeah. I’m not the best source for knowing aftermarket ALICE packs. The brand of this particular ALICE pack is from 5ive star gear. I bought it off of ebay and it didn’t come with the straps or hip pad. The straps and hip pad actually came from the ALICE frame that I removed. What made me have trust issues with this pack is how one of the grommets fell out with no rough use. I’ve seen how snap buttons come off if not properly set in the pack. Overall with a frame, the aftermarket ALICE packs should be fine for most outdoor use.

@@thescharfchannel their are many mods. I don't see what it matters if it is original or not. It is essentially the same pack. Buckle mod should be first for convenience. Some people cut and stitch the straps. I cut the buckle to fit. The hellcat mod is also a good one for comfort. If you do rock the metal frame I would recommend adding a carry handle to the frame.
