Always felt like the Trickster being as brilliant a villain as he was but also only ever appearing in SJA was an interesting choice. It's rare that everyone calls for a spin-off character to cross over with the main show. But that's just how good SJA was

Tbf it always felt like a story with the trickster was building up during RTD1. Members of the trickster’s brigade appeared in Doctor Who (Turn Left) and briefly in Torchwood (miracle day), and he did try to target the doctor stating in his first SJA appearance that if the doctor never existed there would be tons of chaos.

ALSO the pier they filmed at for next years Season 2 episode is the same pier where the Trickster changed Sarah Jane’s timeline and Maria got sent back to with the Graske, and the sign on the theatre says Har-B-Inger!

I remember RTD tweeting about the Trickster being on his mind back in Lockdown. Saying he wish he used him in doctor who and not just the Sarah Jane adventures. He later went onto say if he was still part of doctor who the first villain he’d choose would be the Trickster. And now he has I’m thinking everything with the giggle, his daughter etc… both being of nothing like the trickster is him behind it all. And ironically when I put these things together like many of us trying to look back at the twitter there seem to no longer be that post there like it’s been deleted to prevent spilling of potential storylines. Either that or I’ve skipped passed it.

The music and the fact than RTD had the Trickster in mind in an interview are really mindblowing...

Great video, as an SJA fan I’m loving all the discourse around this. The only thing is that when RTD wrote Farewell Sarah Jane, the narrator mentioned “Sky returned in her human form” suggesting the events of the unmade SJA series 5 finale with Sky manifesting to her final form and guarding the Trickster forever was still canon. But like you’ve said in your video, there’s been soo many similarities to the Trickster, the whole pantheon talk, the music, the destroyed London, the little kid (although the Graske finally escaped the Trickster in series 2), the black hooded cloak… I’m SO excited to see where all this leads.

Except in that same story, the Tricker attacked the funeral. So Skye clearly was not doing a very good job. The funeral attendees sealed the Trickster under the Atlantic for a thousand years. So he's been waiting for a millennia to be free, probably very angry and wanting revenge on Earth and the Doctor for bringing all those people at the funeral together.

Also the mention of "The Music of the Spheres" by Maestro. The special episode at the Doctor Who Proms with the Graske on the loose. All of it hints to the Trickster, I agree.

For SJA references, I’d have loved it if in The Giggle, instead of the rather forgettable The Vlinx robot at UNIT HQ, they’d instead have had Mr Smith! How awesome would that have been. They could’ve even name-dropped Rani or Luke, saying they gave permission for him to be moved from Bannerman Road for safekeeping.

It's what i started thinking the other day. You literally took the words out of my mouth. I literally think Henry is also a grask. In the Sarah Jane episode when she went through the time portal and met her parents. The boy in that episode was a grask in disguise.

@@trg8858 I mean technically speaking the one who waits was not specified as to what they are, so it’s entirely possible that it could be a lost member of the pantheon, or it could be a Time Lord, an eternal, a Dalek (unlikely), or even a doctor who-Thanos equivalent for all we know. It wasn’t specified to *Not* be a pantheon any more than what it actually is.

I've been waiting for YEARS for The Trickster to return. I absolutely LOVED SJA even if I was 6-7 years late after her death. RTD I believe had planned on having Skye being The Trickster's daughter, so him redoing that for Ruby Sunday is amazing seeing as S5 couldn't be finished as originally intended. I wouldn't put it past him for reusing it. ❤

Would be funny if one who waits turns out to be Rory or a pissed off Amy. Hahaha

I heard somewhere that if RTD stayed on to write series 5 then the overarching villain was gonna be the Trickster, With all these god-like entities being unleashed and RTD already having those plans for Series 5 aswell as all this evidence, I believe that the Trickster is gonna make an appearance, i truthfully believe he his the best Doctor Who Villain too

RTD clearly had plans for him. There were so many references to the Trickster's Brigade, even in Torchwood. And RTD saying on Twitter a few years ago that the Trickster watched Harriet Jones being killed and he smiled as his long game plan was paying off. Sounds like he was involved in the Dalek invasion and specifically Harriet Jones's death

You could have him be a fresh and new concept for the new fans wanting more from a supposed pantheon of mischievous gods, and also he would be an immense callback to a character/era of stories beloved by wider New-who fans from the 2000s.

What If the woman at the start dropping off ruby is part of a trickster cult and it’s following a similar story to good omens season 1

key points (its got to be the trickster) (personally i love the idea of getting a retelling of the story we sadly never saw) (as for the kid show bit sja did have some dark moments like we saw the classic slitheen skin, kudlak kidnapped children for years, sarah having to choose between her paretns and the world. 1) gods are everywhere (toymaker and maestro) 2) sky story arc is similair to ruby's, both were abandoned as a baby, sky would have been the child of the trickster 3) the trickster gave sky to sarah jane just like how ruby was given to the church and he knew the Doctor was there, sky was originally going to debut in a christmas special, sky would have been like the trickster 4) russel's idea of the church on ruby road has been brewing for ages, and the finally has been in his head for 40 years 5) ruby's music is similair to the trickster motive 6) the trickster's cube came back in the memory tardis 7) ncuti appears in the memory tardis 8) the toymaker wouldnt face the trickster because he has so many tricks 9) the person who dropped her off is dressed like the trickster 10) the tricksters grask servent was disguised as a child like henry arbinger

This does seem more and more likely. However I think the Oldest One and The One Who Waits may be two different entities, and they save TOWW for Serial 2.

I currently agree they're separate entities, but Maestro very pointedly saying "The One Who Waits is almost here" is probably a good hint it'll be a this-series thing.

I think the One Who waits is Susan the Doctors granddaughter.

Her song sounds like Rose Tyler's. Maybe she's the daughter of Rose and the half human hybrid 9th Doctor

I think it is possible that the Trickster is coming back and after hearing its track I think they are hinting it. I remember the Trickster in the Sarah Jane Adventures and that villain was really good. My theory is that the Trickster is going to get revenge on the Doctor and the Trickster might have done something to Sarah Jane.

Throughout the show and expanded material there's always been vague references to higher beings, demonic entities, other dimensions, old ones, guardians, eternals, pantheons. Now Russel T davies is putting the more fantasy stuff front and center in the show. Considering the timeless child confirmed the Doctor is not native to our universe anything is on the table. Despite the belief that Davies wants to start fresh with a new audience, reusing old ideas in a new way is his cup of tea. Bringing back the Toy maker was a big deal him reusing old ideas and characters he never fully got to flesh out makes alot of sense.

I've been rambling about the trickster coming back since Christmas, it was amazing to all but get confirmation in The Devil's Chord

I imeadietly thought of the grask in the parents of Sarah Jane when I saw harbinger at the end. The trickster is one of the best villains in who. I don't think it's true but if it were it would be amazing

Bit of a reach but what if the person who drops ruby outside the church is actually an older version of ruby. If you look at the boots of the hooded figure they are the same as that of Rubys usual get up and they are of the same build frame. It would make sense if it was Ruby for her to be wearing that outfit one to conceal her identity. Or if she is the daughter of the trickster (or even a disciple of his) to wear the cloak an homage to the trickster himself. Maybe ruby drops off a younger version of herself so the doctor can help her. Maybe it’s a trap for the doctor and she’ll turn bad . Maybe we’ll see a bad ruby goss against a good ruby. I reckon they could make it possible for an older ruby be the one dropping off the baby version of herself as rose met her younger self and if it was against the laws of time or whatever she’s related to the trickster a god they could make a loophole around that plot

i had an idea what is susan twist is susan forman what im thinking is susan never learnt about regeneration so she doesnt know how to inititate the first one (remember the tardis helped the doctor initate his first one) susan was going to die but then the trickster came to her and offered her help if she would help him so they make a deal and susan regenerated into susan twist she has to work for the trickster now to make sure she can stay alive and find her grandfather hence why she is popping up every where if her name is S TRIAD which is an anagram of Tardis, susan came up with the name tardis originally and as part of their deal she has to let the trickster into main universe.

The big reveal is definitely going to be something along these lines for sure. There’s an additional unused plot line, more specifically to do with Doctor Who and his companion. Whovians may already know the character of Rose Tyler in RTD’s original run was actually planned to have a bizarre origin story herself. From Wikipedia (there is other stuff about this, but this was the quickest to source):- “Elements of Rose's characterisation in the first series were originally different. Paul Abbott was scheduled to write an episode which would have revealed that Rose's entire life had been manipulated by the Doctor in order to mould her into an ideal companion” What if RTD is revisiting that abandoned plot line? Perhaps in a revised form so that the Doctor himself isn’t actually aware of it? It would explain why he so readily gave her the TARDIS key and why Ruby says things like “you always know what to do” when she’s literally known him for one adventure.

I Think That there is a chance that jenny Might pop up soon also as the the doctors daughter/granddaughter has been Brought up in the last two episodes on the trot coincidence?… I think not

I mean if I were the Toymaker and respected the rules of play I’d be pretty foolish to play someone literally called The Trickster.

The thing is that the Trickster's Brigade has already been in Doctor Who, causing the plot of Turn Left, so bringing in their boss would not be too strange. Even if you never watched the spin offs, there's that thread in the main show.

my theory is maybe the one who waits is the god of time, waiting throughout all of time for the doctor, not to mention swarm said time was an evil entity and was coming for the doctor. timelord vs time god. also correct me if im wrong but either moffat or RTD said the finale for the previous season is relevant to this season and i dont think he's on about the timeless child.

I think he could be a contender for the Oldest One, and that would be tremendously exciting, but I get the impression right now The One Who Waits is something else. I could be wrong, though.

So, I was gonna comment after the video to mention a mini theory I had about this, but the leak kind of explains it for me. My idea was that perhaps if Ruby is The Trickster's child, then what if The Trickster tricks a bunch of previous companions, like Mel and Ace with the Memory Tardis, and because of a grudge between The Trickster and Sarah Jane Smith, he uses the Memory Tardis to trap Clyde, too. At the end, The Doctor has to take on The Trickster and rescue the companions and Clyde, and maybe they'll be a few other cameos. Maybe they can use some of the older Doctors as cameos to trap some other companions. Maybe we'll get a K-9 cameo or something. Anything can happen at this point!

i had not seen the Sarah jane adventures since it aired. you cant get bbc iplayer in ireland and bbc never really repeated the sarah jane adventures. and I am not sure its available on DVD.

Could Mrs Flood be the woman who dropped Ruby off, attempting to save her from the Trickster which is why she lived next door, and Susan Twist is the Trickster or from the Brigade (the one who waits) who subconsciously prompted Newton to make the Mavity change and leaves a trail of chaos (what the doctor fixes in the episodes) for the doctor as they’re sussing things out ready to ‘activate’ Ruby and use her?

Ruby’s identity HAS to be linking to Susan Twist in some way, surely?! The hints that Ruby may not be human, the fact Susan Twist has been in every episode so far, surely it’s linked?

What gives me pause about that is that she started appearing a couple of episodes before Ruby was even introduced, so I've sort of been under the impression she's more linked with the Doctor. (Curiously she started showing up the immediate next episode from when Meep threatened to tell their boss about the Doctor. Food for thought.) That said, next episode looks like a Doctor Lite, so if Susan Twist shows up when Ruby's by herself, you're probably right.

Hasn’t Russell already said it’s something from the 1980’s Who? Trickster isn’t that. So it’s Valeyard, Black Guardian, Fenric or Ragnorok or similar I’d say.

I believe all he said was there are "aspects" to the finale he'd been thinking about for 40-50 years, and that there's something from the Pertwee era. That doesn't preclude something more recent like the Trickster being in amongst it all.

Its a good idea tbf but hes still only part of the pantheon same with the black & white guardians and the toy maker and the meastro. The 4th doctor holds the key of time in one episode. The same key that trapped kronus the god of time in it. So my guess is the one who waits is Kronos the god of time himself. I also think ruby has something to do with the 1st doctors granddaughter

This would be a very good explanation as to what Old Ruby tells Carla and Kate (in 73 yards) to make them so freaking disgusted.

I would love a return from the Trickster, but I find it unlikely that he's the One Who Waits. The Trickster may be a god, but he's definitely a lower-tier god than the Toymaker so I don't see a scenario where the Toymaker would fear him. The Trickster has far more limitations to his power than the Toymaker. Most of the links here feel like very easy coincidences, with the music choice being the only one that stands out but in fairness that's a pretty basic tune. Also, that song was not the "hidden song" inside Ruby. It was simply the cover for the hidden song, which was the Christmas carol that played when she was abandoned as a baby. Personally I just feel the Black Guardian or perhaps even the Valeyard are much more likely candidates.

@@KingKhan20000 my guess would be competition since the Pantheon of Discord and the Trickster's Brigade are listed like different entities, but I suppose they could just be different names for the same thing. Though the Trickster really doesn't strike me as someone who'd have equal allies, only minions, so I'm definitely in the competition camp.

I think the doctor knews Oh and RTD sayed we should be very worried for Ruby. , My god he is doing it isnt he? It must be one hell of a story becaus hhe must have used it zo putch for his return

I think she could be a clone of herself. The same way the 10th doctor had a daughter. She was the one who dropped herself off being her own mother.

Ruby is Susan and used the thing to make her human and forget she’s a time lord like the doctor done in series 3 with the fob watch. The person who dropped ruby/susan off on Xmas eve is Susan but the original Susan so ostensibly she’s dropping herself off 🤷🏻‍♂️🙈😂 or something around the lines. I agree - there is a LOT of evidence supporting this theory. The only (rather compeling, actually) evidence against is the fact that Ruby is continuing with the show after Season One. Maybe the Trickster is coming, but I would argue that, if he is, he's probably not the One Who Waits...He's not waited that much if he was constantly popping up in SJA! I would also argue that The Oldest One and The One Who Waits are different beings, but that's just a feeling rather than anything supported by evidence! I have no doubt that Russell is at the very least repurposing his initial plans for SJA series 5, but they will have likely changed now that it would be a part of the parent show and not it's spin off. Classic Who presented us with a few possibilities for a lot of what is happening here - The Gods Of Ragnarock exist to be entertained (maybe an extention of the Doctor being trapped in a TV show theories?). There were also a host of beings collectively known as The Great Old Ones, such as Animus, Fenric, The Black & White Guardians (potentially just upper echelons rather than Great Old Ones themselves), The Celestial Toymaker, The Great Intelligence, The Nestene Consciousness, and probably others that have escaped memory (as they are want to do). Of all these, (especially given The Toymaker has already showed up!), Fenric is probably top of my list for a potential comeback, especially as he is fond of trapping characters in bootstrap paradoxes...what if that IS Ruby leaving herself as a baby at the Church on Ruby Road, eh?

We don't know what the "One Who Waits" means. Is it that they've been waiting to enter the universe? The Trickster has been waiting to take over the Earth for a long time now but Sarah Jane kept stopping him. Or maybe the Trickster has been waiting for Ruby to grow and meet the Doctor to finally unleash his plan, so he's been waiting Ruby's whole life.

@@ThetaSigma-vu1sk Fenric has been waiting longer...since the dawn of creation, in fact! Ruby is 19, so her whole life isn't that long in comparison lol. And, as you say, Sarah Jane beat him a number of times herself (although admittedly The Doctor did have to bail her out once) Anyway - all just theory and speculation (the BEST part of new Who!) - but I really do doubt that the Trickster is the big bad of the series - another obsticle maybe, but not the big bad. That said, I love the Trickster, and I'll be very happy to be proven wrong! :)

I honestly think it cld be the daughter of the trickster and also fyi sky was made that fleshkind woman so even if intended or not it wldnt make sense if the did do a finale that sky was actually child of trickster but in terms of ruby and trickster i do believe that it cld happen as maestro and toymaker are both immortal god like beings even if toymaker was banished or killed and aet master free trickster cld be one of the god like beings but i have another theory and ik this is out of nowhere but what if the woman who dropped her off was related to the doctor other known as susan which might be the old lady who said haveny you heard a tardis before and ik the age range cld be wild but you never know that ruby might related to the timeless child doctor

It was going to be explained that the Trickster would have put his essence in Sky at the time of her birth to make all this happen so although she’s still the Fleshkind daughter the Trickster would have added his chaos into her

I do think one who wait ether Susan doctor grand daughter or trickster I know how RTD could not use the child of trickster in Sarah jane adventures series 5 many references of him so far

Ruby is suposedly going to be replaced by a new companinon. Plus her becomi g a villain would explain the whisperd. What if ther sayed she will become the Child of Chaos and destruction

My theory is that Susan twist is Ruby's mother and the reason that she has been in every episode of the new season is because she is following Ruby around to keep an eye on her and make sure she stays safe.

So far I've been under the impression she's actually following the Doctor, given she started showing up in Wild Blue Yonder - before Ruby was even introduced. The fact it was also the immediate next episode after the Meep said they were going to tell their boss about the Doctor also raises my eyebrow a bit.

It's not confirmed that is canon. The only canon things that have happened in that is the fact that Sarah Jane died. And the Trickster was in that story, so he survived. In fact, Farewell Sarah Jane adds fuel to the theory. The Trickster was sealed away for 1000 years. So he's been imprisoned and waiting, like the One Who Waits

There were quite a few differences between Andrea and Peter for one Andrea chose to have Sarah Jane die in her place she was also given the box, however Peter didn't know Sarah Jane when his accident happened the Trickster just appeared to him and said he can bring him happiness and he agreed, it's not the same like having two plots in which the Tricksters got a secret daughter, I'm not saying it can't happen RTD could potentially do it but rn I'm not sold on the theory

And the finale is called "Empire of Death". Brings to mind someone like Sutekh; he's definitely been waiting, and he did say all would die under the reign of Sutekh. Yes he was seemingly destroyed at the end of PoM, but when's apparently dying ever stopped anyone in this show?

This is a bit of a bizarre theory but looking at that photo of the woman dropping Ruby outside the church looking at her shies gives me very big Jodie vibes they look similar to the boots she wore especially with how her pants didn't cover the boots so u parts of her legs were exposed its a wild theory but if it was 13 that dropped of Ruby on Christmas eve 🤯

Did the creators of the Trickster kinda have a bad “breakup” with Doctor who. I think it would be hard to have him come back. It’s a lot more likely to be a “god of stories” who is rubys dad/the oldest one The oldest one and the one who waits aren’t the same

We don't know who created the character. It could've been a case that RTD made the character but just asked Gareth Roberts to write his episodes, he's done it before. It wouldn't be the first time RTD had hired a writer to write an episode based of his idea. Most notably, Cyberwoman in Torchwood. The idea of a "sexy cyberwoman" infiltrating Torchwood was entirely RTD's idea, he just hired Chibnall to write it for him.

I think this video has completely blown my theory of fenric being the main villain of the series out of the celestial water which is a shame because really wanted to see him return but it will be nice to have the trickster come back

This might just be me but the outfit of the person who drops Ruby of at the church reminds me of the thirteenth doctor with the 3/4 trousers and boots

I myself theorize that The-Trickster, might have a twin sister, and I theorize she is Ruby’s birth mother. I imagine that The-Trickster’s fraternal twin sister, she has shapeshifting powers, and unlike her brother she genuinely wants friendship, and most importantly romance. To add I imagine it was this strong wish, that made her constantly shape-shift, in order to experience both, and to hopefully find true love. But I imagine it didn’t last, I imagine her romance with a human male, who the son of a woman, that has two jobs, and one’s a secret job. In addition most tragically, the human male she loved, died protecting her, when she was six weeks pregnant, with their baby. I also theorize that Ruby’s biological father, is the son of Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, who is in charge of U.N.I.T. agency. I imagine the name, of Ruby’s biological father, might be (Henry Jacobs Lethbridge-Stewart). Now when it comes to The-Trickster’s sister; I theorize that she might of, come to the realization, that she isn’t the right being, to raise a child, and that includes her own baby. I also theorize before she left her baby daughter, at the front door of the church, she sensed that her daughter, has untapped abilities, even though she is half human.

I rather have the Sarah Jane Adventures be concluded rather than copy paste Sky's arc. Still wish Ruby is Quill's daughter My perspective seems to be that bringing back a plot thread from the Sarah Jane Adventures 13 years ago is fine but concluding Class storyline only 8 years ago is impossible. That doesn't seem fair But yes I want the Trickster back and I hope this leads to more spinoff villains and characters to come back in the future.

I agree I think the rest of SJA series 5 being made into books or big finish is long over due, they continued Class season 2 with BF I believe so I wish they did some more for SJA alongside Rani’s BF series!

@@carsforever4002 well the last audio, the Secret Diary of A Rhodian Prince does end with The Chair writing the last entry before taking a call. I think the Defenders made a deal with the Governors to work with them in return for helping April. And my theory was Quill objected to the arrangement and was sent back to 2004 before she had the baby.

Good theory, but hopefully it's not something that is used until after this mess of an era is over and we go back to quality acting and storytelling. Eccleston was right RTD needs to go, and maybe cast Idris Elba as the next Doctor, he is a tremendous actor and would be a great fit.
