Ruby Lake Trail in the Rock Creek Area of Highway 395

Ruby Lake is a beautiful high-altitude lake near Rock Creek. The trail is only 4 miles round trip and is stunning pretty much the entire way. We hiked it late in the day and got to watch the sunset over Ruby Lake. It is a great choice since the Little Lakes Valley Trail, which leaves from the same trailhead is much busier than this one is. Let me know what you think in the comments!

Many years ago, we took the trek to Gem Lakes. We only saw one other group of people on that trail. It was like we had the whole valley to ourselves! It really is an escape for us city folk. We are headed up to Lee Vining and Bridgeport next month.

You will have to go up Mono Pass sometime. It is one of my all time favorite hikes period. If you are ever backpacking in this area, head over the pass and down to 4th Recess Lake. It is stunning back there and chances are you will have the lake to yourself since past Mono Pass the crowds really thin out.

The last time I was in Mammoth (early autumn 2017), my ex and I did this hike with our Aussie. ⛰🐶🐾🐾 We would usually do the Rock Creek Trail out to the far end of Long Lake, but decided to attempt Ruby Lake. 11,500’ elevation. Gorgeous hike and views. Even though it was late Sept, there was ice from the previous winter still around in various hidden places. 👍🏻😎

Trails are easy to follow (they're well worn) and not technical. The only factor is the elevation and how sensitive you are to it. I wished I had a chance to get acclimated for a couple days before tackling Little Lakes. Took me 2-3 days to recover. People respond differently to altitude though.
